The Michael Shermer Show # 211
As flagship of the American news media, the New York Times is the world’s most powerful news outlet. It doesn't just cover the news: it creates it.
In The Gray Lady Winked, Ashley Rindsberg offers an eye-opening, often shocking, look at the New York Times's greatest journalistic failures, so devastating they changed the course of history:
- How its World War II Berlin bureau chief, a known Nazi collaborator, skewed coverage in favor of the Third Reich for over a decade.
- Its notorious coverup of the Ukraine Famine, a genocide committed by Stalin, showing that it was the newspaper's owners who directed the coverup in order to advance their own financial and ideological interests.
- The “1619 Project,” a cynical, ideologically driven attempt to revise American history by rooting the nation's birth in slavery instead of liberty.
The Gray Lady Winked presents a cautionary tale that shows what happens when the guardians of the truth abandon that sacred value in favor of self-interest and ideology-and what this means for our future as much as for our past.

One my tropes, which I think is original to me, is the Church of the New York Times, which means, the people who stay home on Sunday morning drinking coffee and orange juice, eating smeared bagels and reading the Sunday paper. I'm not sure of the numbers but the Church of the New York Times might be second largest denomination in America, after the Roman Catholics. Total Sunday paper circulation in America is about 25.000,000.

Shermer's tyranophilia point deserved more consideration, I think. Even if opposed to the tyrant's ideology, a lot of people think "hey, that guy can get things done. We need something like that for our vision."

I welcome critiques of the NYT. But based on the the vast majority of comments, it seems that much of Shermer’s audience may have a bias against institutions like the Times. This isn’t uncommon in anti-woke circles.

@JH-ji6cj

He does make a great point about Truth and how we affiliate to the idea. Reminds me a lot of the debate between Peterson and Harris. It also shows how people assign the Right/Conservative label on Peterson (though I mostly disagree with this weak generalization of his positions). When Truth gets associated with usefulness and purpose, it gets corrupted. Granted, people have tendencies and it may be true that humanity cannot decouple from anthropomorphism of perspective which includes truth claims. This leads into where we reside culturally currently in the philosophizing of what was once considered religiously 'settled' through applied spiritual practice and considered 'truth'.

1:17:00 I think he misses the mark on safe-space ideology. I think it's less an ideological distinction of safety (at least in the Tom Cotton article calling for policing protesting). I think the position being held is that by promoting an escalation of policing (to be fair, I endorse Cotton's position of the need for presence or intervention at the protests), that Black protesters would be in danger of not being able to protest without possibly being hurt/jailed/killed due to policing tactics. The idea being that protest necessarily includes violence/looting/destruction due to the emotional opposition that is the reason FOR protesting. For example, the Boston Tea Party. As the abortion issue includes very emotional nuanced discussion, so does the protesting discussion and ancillary effects and discussions (media etc) surrounding it. My take is that protest has become synonymous to warfare or terrorism, where ends justify means instead of protest being a way to exercise attention for purposes of wanting change. It has become viewed as a means for producing change itself, and in that way, is now interpreted as that CHANGE is both warranted and justified by protest being the proof, instead of protest being the elevated plea for the need for attention and social discourse of the issues. It's why I also think the REACTION to the kneeling protest actions in football were so harmful, because those peaceful protests were so adamantly opposed socially, that it sent a message that the only way for the protests to be taken seriously needed to include outrage (violence/destruction) to be taken seriously by the Black community (at least I see it was interpreted that way). Nuance people, nuance.

52:38 Michael Shermer seems to side with the point of view that slavery was a factor at the beginning of the Civil War. Regardless of whether it was or not, the fact remains that slavery was LEGAL and if Lincoln went to war to end slavery, then that was an illegal act of aggression. The proper way to end slavery would have been by legal means and not by force. Can anyone show me a legal document by Congress where slavery was outlawed prior to the beginning of the Civil War?
@kevls5536
@kevls5536 Год назад
yeh if anyone had said to the average Union soldier "Hey, did you know you're fighting to end slavery?" they would have replied wtf Lincoln seems to have had a bee in his bonnet and it wasn't (primarily) slavery. It was more like "power to the federal government at all costs" -- and yes I'm of the opinion that what Lincoln did was illegal. That appears to be why, after the war, southerners weren't prosecuted (legally) since the north was afraid of their shenanigans coming out ... But anyway, it ended slavery so that's a good thing. Kinda strange that no other country on the planet had so many killed and maimed and refugee'd to get that accomplished though. ah well, Amurika ... but what can ya do

Speaking of both enlightenment and journalistic integrity (as well as intellectual rigor), please do inform your own fans Michael of proof of Nietzsche's *"White Supremacy"* . If anyone else can make sense of this claim or hears Shermer actually back up his off-the-cuff Progressive meme affiliation quip, I'd be very interested in knowing about it. Integrity is tough, I guess at least we get to see how it's so easily squandered.

Michael, I understand and admire your skepticism, but sometimes it seems like it leans more towards the goal of debunking in order to support your priors rather than on using the scientific method without pre-judgement. With regards to the new info on UAPs or UFOs, it would be healthy to approach it from an inquisitive perspective which would allow for a discovery phase first before looking to shoot down any information that comes forward just because of its subject matter. With that said I'm still a fan and support your work.

Because Im sceptical. Let me remind you in 1946, in some states you could kill a black man without be hold responsible in a court. This is when the hole world was in shock knowing how the Nazis , tried to erase especially Jewish . And you have apartheid up in the 60’ties. And even from above it seems to be better being a collared person, we still see a biased country I think Europe are going on the same path. And I need to say as long religion is regarded as a overbuilding for moral, and have so much power, kids might go in a school where creationism is forced by parents to avoid their kids at least having a choice to make their own decision. Which they not have, because the stigmata/ and group pressure is so powerful they have to risk loosing job, can’t rent an apartment and trying to run for an office seems to be impossible in almost every state. But the history of US is so messy, and you refer to an insane hunt for one newspaper , but this is not I’m trying defending NT. but I’m not sure if US as a hole have been trying to acknowledge how violent a country you have been living in. South American, , the native & black peoples and all kinds of war . Frankly some of your president should have been prosecuted, for crimes against humanity. But the only person I heard say anything about it, is the late C. Hitchens. But besides a few- no one did openly support him. I wonder why he was almost alone when he enlighten us all. I wonder why you are not doing a book about your blind eye for this! The truth is beyond your self . But a lot of circumstantial facts and digging deep into our history. But I think we will be better than before. Due to (ironic because of )the internet . But as mentioned, we need to raise the level for decency and respect and especially how science does it should be a goal for everyone. But it might take some time, before we evolve.

One book canot be about everything in the Universe. It has to have a focus. The NYT is important enough that it merits being the focus of a book such as this. I haven't read it, but hearing the interview, I'm sure that the lessons learned by focusing on this particular paper can be carried on to other instances. Putting it in another way: I do have the impression that this book is a case study done in depth, not a hit piece. It could be the case, but I don't get the vibe that it is.
@mwl5

Journalists will occasionally get stuff wrong and make corrections, and publishers will push trending topics, but the idea that all media outlets don’t report facts is simply wrong. NYT has had plenty of award winning journalism. 60 minutes, propublica, NPR, Frontline, WSJ. Just because you either don’t like what they are saying or don’t agree with it, doesn’t mean they’re wrong. If you’re getting your “news” from social media personalities, you’ve failed.
