Well your city and government just need to be capable to manage these costs. The costs are much lower if the local area doesn’t need to build much new infrastructure, which was proved by LA. Rio costs were so expensive because they needed to revitalize the entire area, build a new subway system, clean the bay, etc. You don’t need to do things like that in many other major cities and they would be more suitable to host.

I know right! They can pick a neutral island and countries can take turns through a bidding process similar to the current one for hosting the event to renovate whatever facilities need attention. This avoids expensive one time investments of infrastructure and removes the need to displace thousands of locals by host countries. However, the problem with a permanent island/location comes in transportation of viewers. If it's an island, then an airport would have to be built and maintained just for the event. Similarly for hotels and restaurants though the expenses for maintaining the latter is significantly cheaper than maintaining a hotel. However the infrastructure for tourists problem can be skirted if the island is situated near a big city. Flights, accomodation and restaurants would see dramatic rise for the roughly 3 weeks of the event. Spectators can be ferried to and from the island. Yes this city near the island will benefit perhaps unfairly over others because this would be a permanent destination, but it cuts billions is potential costs. Coming back to the winning bidder situation, it would have to renovate existing facilities such as stadiums and housing for the atheletes. Because this would be an island, the housing for atheletes could be spread across a much larger area with individual cheap units rather than expensive high rise apartments that are hard to build and maintain. Meanwhile the stadiums would need a high initial investment but could but maintained at a cheaper rate. The most sustainable solution would be to reuse these venues. Hosting football, basketball matches and concerts would significantly reduce operating costs. Additionally, reusing the roads for events such as F3, F2 and F1 would further reduce costs. There definitely exist better long term solutions than simply leaving governments with billions in debt.

Los Angeles was good too, because all of the buildings, infrastructure, except one, the velodrome, were already built. Peter Ueberroth did a good job, but LA did not have to spend billions of dollars on indoor/outdoor stadiums, rowing, and swimming facilities, horse tracks, dormitories, etc. Sports stadiums are not profitable, nit in two weeks, not in two years, not in twenty years. This is why they are built by governments, in part or in whole, and not by private businesses. How can anyone possibly make a profit using a facility 8-16 days ( football), 81 days ( baseball) , 41 days ( basketball)/ year . Even when mixing in college games with pro games on a field or a court, college ticket prices are a fraction of professional ticket prices. Professional SPORTS ARE A SCAM. Football , baseball, basketball facilities in junior high school and high school plus training are public tax money financing the development of a future employees of only a few specific companies, PRO SPORTS. Pop Warner football and little league baseball should be continued on to college with the private citizens paying for the training and the facilities. If parents are unwilling to p pay for the costs, then the children should not be participating. Schools should be for education.

The IOC is a criminal organization, plain and simple. Cities should no more want to do business with the IOC than they should want to do business with the the Sinaloa Cartel.

The IOC is also well known for not wanting to pay taxes on it's profits. This has been confirmed in the negotiations they were doing for the bid of "Rhine-Ruhr 2032". As far as I know, the region didn't accept this and thus it was one of the reasons 2032 is going to Brisbane. they just want the money for their organisation.

Olympic stadiums are always used after the games. Problems become baseball ballparks, beach volleyball arenas, aquatic centres, kayak facilities, velodromes etc. edit: the only olympic stadium that hasn’t been used after was for Pyongyang, which was demolished right after the game.

LA and Paris had both Bid for the 2024 Olympics originally. The IOC was concerned no one would bid on the 2028 games, thats why they Awarded them to LA when Paris won the 2024 games. These cities both planned on hosting the the games beforehand, they weren't randomly selected or forced.

Would you want to either when 90% of your population is not fully vaccinated, the new Delta+ variant is 50% more dangerous and the pandemic is still raging around the world? It's just dumb and extremely dangerous that the IOC is insisting it has to happen this year. The IOC promises to boost international tourism. If they delay it another year, the games can open up to most of the world to come visit Japan and boost the stagnant economy. Instead, they're forcing local folks to spend money and support the games (and fill the IOC's pockets).

Pre-pandemic they did support it. Tokyo was on track to become a success story like London 2012, however now that Japanese government failed a vaccine roll out and costs skyrocketed, public support nose dived.

The USOC at the time confirmed that the United States was not going to bid. Las Vegas, however, submitted a bid to the IOC without USOC consent and were rejected by the IOC because they did not have the required USOC consent.

@@LuckyK7777 In fact the 1967 International Expo had a seismic effect on the society, opening a close and retrograde culture to the world. In terms of infrastructure it constructed some essential facilities that are still in great usage today. I speak from experience being a French Canadian born in the sixty and living in Montreal. The Olympics in 1976 was a financial disaster that indebted the citizen for decades and in my view had little positive outcome. It diverted huge sums of money to things that would have helped, like health, education and affordable housings. Olympics are just a sporting event that has become a vanity project for government and politicians and has little effect on the population.

Building an extension to the Montreal Metro for the 1976 Olympic Games was not cheap. After being awarded, in May 1970, a loan of $430 million ($2.7 billion in 2016) was approved by the Montreal Urban Community on February 12, 1971 to fund the extensions of Line 1 (Green Line) and Line 2 (Orange Line) and the construction of a transverse line: Line 5 (Blue Line). The Government of Quebec agreed to bear 60% of the costs. The work on the extensions started October 14, 1971 with Line 1 (Green Line) towards the east to reach the site where the Olympic Stadium was to be built and Autoroute 25 (Honoré-Beaugrand station) that could serve as a transfer point for visitors arriving from outside. The extensions were an opportunity to make improvements to the network, such as new trains, larger stations and even semi-automatic control. The first extension was completed in June 1976 just before the Olympics. Line 1 (Green Line) was later extended to the southwest to reach the suburbs of Verdun and LaSalle with the Angrignon as the terminus station, named after the park and zoo. This station opened in September 1978. In the process, further extensions were planned and in 1975 spending was expected to reach reached $1.6 billion ($7.3 billion in 2016). Faced with these soaring costs, the Government of Quebec declared a moratorium May 19, 1976 to the all-out expansion desired by Mayor Jean Drapeau. Tenders were frozen, including those of Line 2 (Orange Line) after the Snowdon station and those of Line 5 (Blue Line) whose works were yet already underway. A struggle then ensued between the MUC and the Government of Quebec as any extension could not be done without the agreement of both parties. The Montreal Transportation Office may have tried to put the government in front of a fait accompli by awarding large contracts to build the tunnel between Namur station and the Bois-Franc station just before the moratorium was in force.

I live in Stratford and I agree with you regarding West Ham part, however I do think it’s fantastic how much of legacy has been left my the games in Stratford. The Olympic park hosts several teams, clubs and events. The Westfield centre alongside the new east bank site helps really adds a lot of culture and excitement to the area. I’m sure it’s all dirty money, but what do we truly expect 😅

There literally has to be food being made around the clock nor breaks for over 17,000 people and it makes more sense to cook it there and have big cafeterias (which is how they serve their food) there’s a lot of extra tourism stuff they include to make it more a fantasy experience for players that cities don’t need to have, Rio has so much wasted park space it’s sad

In London, our Stadiums were designed to be used after the games. The stadium is now a football stadium. The swimming pool is now a leisure centre. Copper Box Arena is an actual boxing gym. The athletes' quarters are all flats that have been sold or rented out and Stratford is now one of London's nicest places.

In most cases the venues are too expensive for the host city/country to keep up. They can cost millions each year to maintain and most facilities are only good for the sport they were designed for. A velodrome is not good for anything but cycling and too expensive for local cyclist to maintain on their own.

@@1964mcqueen I don't disagree about the maintenance but where I live, NYC, taxdollars go to a ton of various projects. Keeping these venues open and under maintenance would increase jobs and the lifestyle for many people. Like I've stated, imagine if you could turn these into huge parks and allow commercial stores or events to operate... There are plenty of ways to make it viable but the intentions of it generally aren't planned with that being in mind.

If a country/city doesn't have these facilities before they host the olympics, then they are not going to need them after the Olympics. But it's the countries that put in bids to be hosts, so they are literally asking for trouble.

The 2032 bid which is 95% likely going to Brisbane is doing this. The games will be spread out to the Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and maybe even more. And with no new sporting venues needing built just upgrades it could pay off

I was thinking the same thing! Why not the concept of a whole continent taking part in the Olympics? For example in Asia, Tokyo will have the opening ceremony while Manila will have Basketball (you get my point) I think countries will have time to prepare because they're only focusing on a particular sport and not focus on the whole event in general.

Have a look at the Sydney games. All the venues that were not temporary and still used, especially the Olympic stadium is used every weekend to host multiple sporting events (soccer, rugby, rugby league all have home teams based in it)

Flew to Sydney for a week long conference that took place in Sydney Olympic Park in 2015 and was blown away at how well utilized the infrastructures were from 2000. They even let my team book a box room to use in the rugby stadium to hold a meeting in and it proved a wiser choice as the guests experience a change in scenery from the mundane conference room approach. I even delayed the meeting time to 5pm and added free drinks for guests so it was more of a happy hour meeting with a view of the stadium. It was brilliant!

VP Harris has asked volunteers in Atlanta and elsewhere to go door to door and encourage them to get their vaccine. She states that the President's goal of 70% is falling way short and that we must do this to save lives. Please people, let's get serious, get yourself and your family vaccinated. As an American, I got to see that. I even got to see the pool! The super high diving board was closed (but they showed up the bubbling device under water used to help soften water impacts due to the great height involved).
