This is one of the better taping videos on youtube that I keep coming back to. Straight and to the point. Not a lot of superfluous talking. Just had a guy tape/mud a small job - amazing skill and dexterity. He was a philosopher about the job. "Every building . . . commercial & residential . . . has wall board. There's always plenty of work." He went on to say how he like to leave his jobs 'invisible.' He worked to keep the surfaces and joints the 'secrets' he left behind. I talked to my wife about how he turned the intention of a design: shapes, surfaces, angles into reality. That is what the 'trades' do - they deliver aesthetic reality where designers & engineers simply contemplate intention. He also said that he like the low stress of the job. "Floor and cabinet guys have to stress about mistakes, they can't do it over." he said. But he gets to start over to make it right anytime he wants. Brilliant video!
@DiscoFang
@DiscoFang 5 лет назад
So true. The design made real; the mistake stress; the therapy and meditation of repetition in drywall stopping. I'm a designer (a degree and all - architecture first, then graphics) but have been involved with and doing construction since I was a kid. Dad was a philosophy propfessor ( I kid you not) and he was also involved with demolition (again I kid you not). Design and construction is what I do now and much prefer the "making it real" side of it. Nothing says truth like making something real. My favourite things are timber framing and mud/stopping/plastering. It's like playing as a kid. The stress part of construction/creating you mentioned cannot be underestimated. By far the most stressful thing is bench-top cutting. One slip, chip or mis-measure and bam! Start over. With plaster it's whack! Chip! Redo. Done. Smooooooth & crisp.

Good clean work brother. Began as a Plasterer here. Certain disciplines, good and bad, from that training now mingle with my drywall work. Often I am in residential, often with wild board work , terrible corners and gaps and what not. With plaster i can "form" and build up quicker and cures faster and denser. You do clean work with that tape. That's the hardest thing to master I've used the self-adhesive mesh for so long I use it for both materials. I'm messy with the tape.

I'm renovating my own house doing my own boarding and taping. From the very beginning of this video I started learning new stuff. The bucket dump (why didn't I think of that?!?!), the way he applies the mud and seats the tape and so much more. This guy is an absolute pro. I clicked on it after doing a remodel on our half bath in our old house so it was probably tricky for a rookie with uneven corners and such, but I think it's ok. I'm getting better so now I see my first project and want to redo it..embarrassed of how bad it looks. Haha. Took down old pieces cabinets and didnt float well. I can still see where the cabinets were. I think I may. Any tips?

@@melanierust7129 The beauty of finishing walls is that, in most cases, you can always improve upon an already-existing bad job without having to start over from scratch. There are different levels of finishes you can apply to the wall using mud with some sanding in between applications. Go watch again, a good finisher, would have applied the mud, and then the tape to the flat with a total of 5 movements. This guy had 9 just applying the mud. A real finisher, Would have pulled from the corner of the flat that hits the corner, pulling 4 to 6 ft on the first spread, Then Another load and spread finishing most likely the apply of mud, but I gave another movement just in case. Then go back to the start of the mud spread and apply the tape, This is one full non stop movement taking about 5 seconds. Then after cutting the tape. The wipe is starting at the corner again, pulling into the corner, tighting the tape and good seal in the corner, and then the final fifth movement, pulling the tape tight, wiping the mud down, leaving no edge like this guy, Tape is tight, unlike this guy, good pack on the seam, unlike this guy.. and is over in about 15 seconds, Not the 4 minutes like this guy. Also, you would not need to go get a scraper and clean the floor like you will after this guy is done. He dropped about half a knife worth of mud just wiping the flat. Also, As someone who has been taping for 20 yrs. This guy has to be single, As no wife would put up with their washing machine being destroyed every few months. This guy is bathing in the mud. A true finisher, would have a few specs on his clothes. He knows when the mud is gonna fall, and how to not stand under it. This guy is doing a wall, an he is this sloppy, I would hate to see him doing overhead work. To be honest, I would probably pay this guy 70 bucks to 100 a day, no more, and base that on a 8 hour day. He is a floorman. The stilt man, or second lead, is a 250 dollar a day man.. who is doing all the overhead and having to get down off his stilts and help this guy finish up hos 40 boards he ran all day, when the overhead guy in the same area just ran 100 to 140.. and finished a hour or two before him, and is now running 30 to 40 boards in 2 hours.. cause they are 3 times faster then this guy. Lead man is in the high cealing and doing the high dollar work, putting the corner bead on, straight flex, doing the 45 angles, Then jumpin on stilts, and showing the second lead why he is still the second lead cause he is just to fast to keep up with.. then they both get down and make the floor man look like the beginner bitch.. Rant over.. That is a REAL Finishing CREW!

The builder was still in the neighborhood knocking out other houses. He stopped by and checked out my work. One thing he noticed was the "pocks" or little holes in the mud here and there after I applied it. He suggested before I mix the mud with water in the 5 gallon pail, add an "X" of dawn dish soap at the top of the mud. I did this in preceding batches and it helped alot. Hi and Hello. I gather people for a good cause: I wanna provide people with Links leading to bad or toxic people. Mobber, Racists, Sexists, Bullies, more. I got the Links and i need help with reporting them. RU-vid is in a bad state and i think you heard of that. Many complain about it, its strike-system and its CEO: Susan. But... I mean... complaining about the State of the world is nice and dandy, but... how about acting? Doing something? So i made a Wiki where i store Links for all to use. Yeah, unorthodox, i know, but whatever. Its my Try to help. You can at least pre-emptive 'block user' regarding the Racists and all those, but you can also do one thing more and report them. You surely know what a mess youtube is, so? What do you think about all this? I mean, its a good cause, improving the internet and the world, and it costs no money, just time. Nice or not? I'm sure this comment didnt made it all clear, but point is, i wanna act and help others to act, not just complain. If somethings not clear, ask Questions; that normally helps with confusion.

I'm an old timer; this guy is good. This is how I was taught the trade. Way back they didn't have Ready Mix mud. It was a powder and had to be mixed perfect or you would have lumps. I use to use the old hawk and trowel. The webbing tape is better. Later 8"- 12" inch knives were incorporated to do the bedding. The only fall back about the webbing tape is you can't use it in your angles. Still, have to use paper. I use to wear stilts. I was young and fast I could hang 250 ft roll of tape in 30 minutes. I have used bazookas, bed boxes, angle tools, nail spotters. It is good to watch a professional do it the old fashion way.

Nice to see a guy that knows what he's talking about, most the hacks on RU-vid show the wrong way and end up making the job harder. Of course we also use bazookas and banjos which puts on the mud and tape at the same time.

Wow...... I've been a trim carpenter for 28 years......... worked around many a sheetrocker, but lately I've been doing more general carpentry and have found myself doing small sheetrock work. Looks like I've not been adding nearly enough water to fresh mud, which has made the job a lot more difficult than it should have been. Thanks so much for putting this up...... it will help a lot. I have no desire to do more sheetrock work, but if I do, I want to do as good a job as I can........

more water equals thinner mud. The result is way less sanding and a smoother glide. Of course too much water and you are just wasting your time and materials.

I'm a painter and sometimes I have to do a little of this.... you guys make it look so easy lol. I cannot for the life of me figure out how you guys get such straight runs of mud. When I get done it's wavy on the outsides so I know I'm doing it wrong. Also probably takes me 10 times as long as you guys to get the same look. (mostly lol)
