Hey Corbin I agree there is a chance that this rotation can be surprising decent with Giolito,Bello,Crawford, Pivetta, and Houck while yes all of these guys are good we don’t have a guy we can say is gonna keep up with the other teams ace. I think if we add Montgomery he will be able to keep up and Bello or Giolito and go with the number two pitcher

I watched Gialito lead off yesterday. His velocity was good. The fastball was up around 95, but he only went 2 innings, so it was a small sample size. I think he will be a positive addition to the rotation. Montgomery is still in the mix, but we'll see if he actually signs. The rookies in the rotation will need extra downtime to get through the hole season, possibly with the exception of Bello, who spent last year in the rotation last year. That's going to be a challenge for the managers. I think Houck will make the starting rotation. I will be surprised if Whitlock and Winchowski make it. Marta has a hamstring problem that popped up yesterday and may affect his season.

The velo's are up so far yes with these guys and that's very good news and it's very important. What's even more important is stamina which was an issue last season. I truly feel that Bailey, Breslow and Willard can give these pitchers the tools they need to maintain their stamina all season long. They used to call Andrew Bailey the Miricle worker back in San Francisco and for good reason. I'm very confident he can do the same here in Boston. Positive signs are positive results. I agree. I share your optimism to a degree. 1) We need a LHP. Teams will load up lineups with L/H bats and it will catch up to them as they settle in for series. 2) An improved defense will help. I think the OF is improved, the IF not so much. If you think fans are crucifying Devers, wait until they see Grissom in the field. 3) Giolotto has the potential to be an ace, as does Bello. 4) I believe Whitlock will win the 5th spot 5) Depth is a good thing and they appear to have it. Just not the high end quality. Good stuff sir.

Sundays are longer without Red Seat Radio. As always, thanks, Corbin. Full Monty!!! Sign Monty and paired with Gio, Sox have two solid #2 pitchers who will give you 60 starts. One from the right, one from the left. Bello right now looks like a potential #3+, even at last year's performance. If his 2nd year stamina gets him only an extra 20%, that would make him a top ten #3. Kutter and Pivetta should be high floor #4/5 and then Houck, etc. as spot starters #6/7/8 or strengthening the bullpen. Then, next year, sign an ace calibre pitcher. We'd have the new ace, Monty, Bello, Kutter, and maybe a young, lefty, controllable trade acquisition. That is a playoff rotation for years to come.

I like the culture change that has happened under Breslow. Seems like there is a lot of buy in org wide. Changing to Willard and Bailey is going to be one of the most significant coaching changes across baseball. Go ask rangers fans if rehiring Mike Maddux made a difference for them last year. The team has talent it just needs to extract the most out of them. Pivetta needs to prove the velo and the sweeper are legit. Giolito needs to conquer his mechanical issues. Kutter needs a full starters workload. Bello imo should be working on the cutter because cutters neutralize opposite handed batters more than sliders do. And one of the 3 needs to emerge (or sign Montgomery which at this point makes too much sense) and that bullpen has plenty of depth and fits the roles you want it to, plus you have way more bullpen depth in the upper minors. That, along with better help and defense and suddenly you’re probably creeping into the top 5-7 pitching staffs in the AL
@redseatradio
@redseatradio 5 месяцев назад

@RickBarnett
@RickBarnett 5 месяцев назад
I think this year is going to be another tale of 2 halves. I think with Bailey and a new and hopefully improved defense we will see the Sox be very competitive until around June or July. Then the big question will be in the second half how will the starters and depth be doing, Most of the pitchers do not have a lot of innings pitched in a season, so when they start getting to the high water mark they may fall off pretty much like we saw with Bello last year. Also can the starters stay healthy for a full year, if not then you have to rely on depth and that I don't think is much better than it has been. So in the first half I do think the Sox can be in the middle of the pack pitching wise, but it is very questionable around the all-star break as to what happens and that may really throw the numbers off. My hope is Bailey can really help with the mechanics and all for the whole season and they do manage to stay healthy just so they can build the youngsters up so that in 25/26 they can stay steady for a full season. Also I hope they do well enough with the coaches that it helps Cora choose to stay here and get a nice healthy contract. Thanks for providing the topic again Corbin.Time will tell if they can do this for a full season.
@redseatradio
@redseatradio 5 месяцев назад
Yeah the second half is gonna be super interesting for sure. I think Breslow will have a good pulse on that whether it’s buy or sell though. Thanks Rick!

Very positive report, makes one want to start now. I don't disagree. What I think of about the rotation is the 10 'starters' the Sox will need to make it through a 162 game season. Which leads me back to the starting 5. Who is really going to give the Red Sox some real innings. All I really see is Gio. So with that said - Bello; I do not see inning but the fair thing to is tosay is 'We'll see, Then I see 2-3 with the usual potential for 'dead-arm' 5-6 starts in. None have much in line with longevity. Point of this the starters have positives agreed but none outside of Gio have really pitched a 'full' season. Which lands us back at those 10 'other' starters. Most teams do not drag starters up from the minors early, so it's 'Bullpen' games. Depleting nonsensical innings on guys that you are counting on for the last 45 games and the playoffs. Again great coverage video, I am taking it deeper into the actual play over 162. The point is the games throw a lot at player, I do not see 'innings' in the front five. And then......, darkness. There is no #1 here and it is really needed badly. But Mr. Henry as you may not know is very, very busy right now in London - 'Klopp savors his ‘most special trophy’ as Liverpool wins the English League Cup'!!!! 2/25/24

Honestly, I feel like Houck has some good potential as a back of the rotation starter. Winckowski was very effective in relief last year, so I'd rather keep him there. As for Whitlock, I think he should be a reliever only too just because the injury proneness as you mentioned is a big concern.

I agree, this rotation can do things for sure. I think Houck and Crawford can take a step, I'm hopeful Winck/Whitlock will be good SP depth for an inevitable injury. I like Bello and Piv after some of what they showed in parts of last year. I also believe in a bounceback Gio season. Always awk to bring up, but it's hard to imagine going to the Angels then swapping teams AGAIN is good for a pitcher (and obv personal issues will affect most people, even subconsciously, no matter how professional they are). White Sox were famously bad vibes last year and the Angels weren't much better. By the time he's in CLE he's gotta just be waiting to get to the off season and reset it all. Without any other help there's a non-zero chance this rotation is top 10 by end of year imo

We had the same conversation last year. Problem is 3 teams in AL E have improved markedly in 2024. Sign Jordan Mongomery and its possible. Sox need 160 inning starter who tosses 3.95 era with 1/2 games in Fenway. It will make the bullpen so much better. He is the only free agent that makes sense because he is the only one with a durable track record. He rarely gets tagged the first time through the 1-9 lineup. That is the starter type the Redsox need.. Unlike lucas giolito (who i really like) who has some wrinkles that need work, JM is an anchor starter for years to come. Because he is durable, his acquisition wont violate the Johnny Appleseed approach to team building redsox brass are set on. The new pitching Red Sox "pitching brain trust" of Breslow, Bailey and Willard should greatly help this entire pitching staff take a step forward in 2024 ... Hopefully we will see all five starters consistently being able to get through the opposing batting orders at least twice each outing and not overburden the bullpen as they did last season ... As of today, it appears the Sox are doing the right thing by waiting out Scott Boras and his overpriced demands for the pitching services of Jordan Montgomery ... However, I still doubt Montgomery will end up in Boston ... With Zack Wheeler becoming a free agent at the end of this upcoming season, it won't be surprised to ultimately see Dave Dombrowski and the Phillies sign Montgomery to a two or three year deal by the end of spring training ...

Corbin man I love your energy and I think it would have been fun watching you 6 or 8 years ago when the sox where good. But this team is gonna suck, everyone knows it. Ownership knows it , and doesn't care Management knows it the players know it the fans know it. We can always hope they don't. We can hope they are not out of it by June. But it's not likely and it's OK to say it. It's actually more entertaining to talk about than all the maybes and what ifs. The sport talk radio guys barely even talk baseball anymore and when they do it's bashing Ownership, rightly so I might add. It's OK to say they suck
@redseatradio
@redseatradio 5 месяцев назад
But they don’t suck. They aren’t in the same category as a pirates or an athletics. They aren’t going to lose 100 games, that’s what’s really frustrating. If you really think all I do is praise this team you haven’t been paying attention. But to say they suck is just false and right now everyone is 0-0 on the year.
@danbartolini27
@danbartolini27 5 месяцев назад
@@redseatradio they sucked last year and the team has NOT improved. Paxton and Sale had there problems but there wins have not been replaced. Turner had a good year his production has not been replaced. Verdugo was our most productive outfielder and one of the best hitters on the team O'Neil is not as good and not as durable. Giolito is this years Kluber a once good pitcher that's been in a downward spiral the last couple of years. Grissom might be an upgrade at 2nd if he makes the team , a second basemen with 17 major league games under his belt isn't going to save the season. Redsox Nation is pissed and you should be too. Last year I thought they would be worse than 22 it was a wash . This year I know they will be worse . 70 w- 92 L if not more

if that's how you feel then put your money where your mouth is ;) so at least you have a reason to be pessimistic. Sportsbooks have the red sox as an 80 win team and you are projecting 10 less wins so that should be free money for you...@@danbartolini27

Last year the team wasn't good and they (management) has made the team worse. The rotation is worse by subtraction. Pitchers/ wins that have left the team and not been replaced. Outfield and Dh are worse again by subtraction. O'Neil isn't as good as Verdugo and if Massa is the DH that's a subtraction from the Outfield and DH , he's not as good as Turner. 2nd base could be better with Grissom and SS will be better with Story if he plays and hits like was supposed to when we got him

hey Corbin, I know you don’t want Trevor Bauer but would you do me a favor and take a pole from your fans who would like Trevor Bauer and who wouldn’t and why because if Toronto, Baltimore or New York or Tampa what’s the signs him I think that would make a huge difference so if we don’t get Montgomery or Snell or Bauer and those teams in our division, do get one of them, we can forget about winning the division or even the wildcard there is those are my thoughts.
