How the Sorrentine inlay is made

Marquetry has been considered the greatest expression of artisanry in Sorrento since the nineteenth century. It consists of cutting thin strips of various types of precious woods, and then gluing them in a refined decoration on various objects, including music boxes, small tables, picture frames, and many others.

A few comments from a woodworker of over 45 years The level of craftsmanship is very high. Of course, if you have been trained well (as I have but not very much in inlay) and do the job for years, then it becomes easier - still not easy but you learn where mistakes are likely to happen I have done a bit of inlay but mainly modern stuff in angular shapes rather than flowing curves. It helps to have the right materials and the right equipment. You (me, anyway) also has has to be in the right frame of mind; any tension in me leads to small mistakes; even music of the wrong kind (aggressive) whereas very peaceful music genuinely helps me These boxes sell new on Sorrento for large amounts of money - quite rightly for the time and materials - to tourists. However, if you go to auctions, you can pick up Sorrento boxes and tables for a fraction of their original cost. I’ve bought boxes in excellent condition, maybe needing a refinish to the top - for £5; a nest of tables for £20. I’m afraid that the original Sorrento inlay designs are just not in fashion at all. But, if you see a modern version with angular inlays, then the prices rocket - although they were easier to make. Such is the effect of fashion on supply and demand.

@H. Fritz I’ve travelled to many countries and have to say that every one of those have beautiful places as well as some that are not so great. I believe the same can be said about the peoples - most are very nice but not everyone. Design is very much in the eye of the beholder. It is very personal whilst skill is universal. For me, I like some designs of most periods.
@theofarmmanager267
@theofarmmanager267 Год назад
@H. Fritz I suggest that the potential market for high quality goods is probably expanding. Compared to the era of the Grand Tour, there are more quite wealthy people but fewer very rich people - as opposed to mass poverty and a very wealthy aristocracy. However, the amount of goods available to the “quite wealthy” has increased enormously and so competition is fierce. In other words, and as a for instance, the percentage of people who should appreciate a bespoke or high quality piece of furniture is probably higher than ever but so many people seem quite content to buy something from retailers such “Oakfurnitureland”. If that’s good enough for them, then fine. Thankfully, there is still left a small market for highly bespoke or superb quality pieces but there are few crafts people who can make a decent (as good as an office job for instance) living from making and selling alone. For those who love quality but find the prices of new items out of their reach, then I would fully recommend the auction market.

The most famous Neapolitan song is Torna a Sorrento (Come Back to Sorrento), which was written in 1902 by Italian composer Ernesto de Curtis with words by his brother Giambattista. It became extremely popular, and was sung by all the leading vocalists, including Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Enrico Caruso, Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, and Meatloaf.

For those that want to know about the area that these handmade inlays are made en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sorrento The area dates back to around 600 BC. The song in the background is called, " Come back to Sorrento " made around 1900. The myth of the Sirens has hovered over Sorrento since the beginning of time. Three mermaids settled near Punta Campanella enchanting the seafarers in transit through those waters. Even the great Ulysses had to use stratagems to resist the deadly song of the Sirens. Why do I care? My families history is from Italy.

BONITO COMENTARIO, PERO NO ME CASA LO DE ULISES, LAS SIRENAS Y QUE SE ESCRIBIERA Y SE COMPUSIERA EN 1900. SOY MUY CURIOSA Y CREO QUE TE TENGO QUE CORREGIR. LA CULPA ÉCHASELA A GOOGLE. * TORNA A SORRENTO ES UNA CANCION NAPOLITANA. COMPUESTA EN 1902 POR ERNESTO DE CURTIS. LA LETRA QUE ES PRECIOSA Y LA COMPUSO EL HERMANO DE ERNESTO: GIAMBATISTA EN HONOR A UN POLITICO PARA QUE VOLVIERA A SORRENTO PARA SOSEGAR REVUELTA POLÍTICAS. Lo de LAS SIRENAS, ES MUCHO MÁS ANTIGUO, AL MENCIONAR A ULISES, HAY QUE IRSE A *LA ODISEA * DE HOMERO Q DATA DE MUCHOS SIGLOS ANTES DE XTO. SE PIENSA QUE HOMERO VIAJÓ POR TODO EL MEDITERRANEO, DE EXTREMO A EXTREMO Y POSIBLEMENTE, COLOCÓ A SU PERSONAJE * ULISES * EN ESOS VIAJES. NO SERÍA DE EXTRAÑAR QUE ULISES SUPLANTARA A SU AUTOR: HOMERO. DE TODAS FORMAS, TU COMENTARIO ME GUSTA, PERO AL YO SER DE LETRAS, ALGO ME SUENA DEL GRIEGO Y SU MITOLOGÍA . HE CON CONSULTADO CON LA GOOGPEDIA ANTES DE ESCRIBIR Y HASTA HE OÍDO A PAVAROTI CANTAR LA CANCIÓN. TE DOY LAS GRACIAS , HOY SÉ MÁS QUE AYER, PERO MENOS QUE MAÑANA. You use an iron with modern glues that go off quicker and in the old days you'd use sand bags to hold it in place when they used hide glue which takes longer to cure.
