We should stop asking what Europe can do for Switzerland and instead we should consider what Switzerland can do to help the construction of the EU. Indeed if Europe fails in the near future Switzerland will not be well-preserved from the collateral damages. The European Union has been present since after the Second World War but the logic of a developing federalization is presently clogged. The European Union does not enjoy the appropriate culture, something which comes naturally for Switzerland.
Born in Brussels in 1931 Jacques Neirynck has Swiss, French and Belgium citizenship. In 1954, he obtained his diploma as an Electrical Engineer and became a Doctor of Sciences at Universite Catholique de Louvain in 1958. Since 1972, he has been a Professor at the Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne where he holds the Chair for Circuits and Systems. He was named Professor Emeritus in 1996.
Professor Neirynck has been engaging in the consumer movement in Belgium, France and Switzerland, among other things by leading several journals on the topic and by contributing to numerous radio and TV shows. In 1999, he was elected National Councilor in the federal parliament and became a member of two parliamentary committees: Science / Education / Culture and Transport / Telecommunications. He has been reelected for two further legislations and has also become a member of the Grand Council at Canton de Vaud in 2012. He has been an editor and assistant chief of the monthly "La Politique" for the last two years.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

It's extremely sad that a video such as this gathers so little views

Short Summary: - Switserland is a wealthy country, in a broke europe. - People can make mistakes, but they're allowed to make mistakes. - Regions that want independence can be taken into account (Scotland, Catalonia, Flandres) - Switserland is slow, but it works. It maintains unity of the country despite diversity

Broke Europe? Viewed from Africa we take that "brokeness" any day!

It works... slowly... In Switzerland. What if the USA would be confederation? Then we would all speak German now... We need a federal EU in a fast paced world. This is my opinion. I do like the video, as I think the solution for the EU is indeed rooted in changing the gouvernance.

2nd step dissolve England France and Germany.. okay you might have to rethink that one to be realistic sir ☝️

exactly what I was thinking !! If areas like Catalonia and Scotland democratically mandate independence, the EU and European political class shouldn't prevent that, but they definitely shouldn't encourage dissolving member states.

I do not agree with most of everything he said until the point at which he starts to talk about how Switzerland could help Europe. E.g. the birthrate of people that are born with another passport besides the swiss passport, does most certainly not have a significant influence to the national identity of the Swiss and thus including those people with +n passports besides the swiss one. Why should it? These holders of multiple passports are born here and are mostly very well integrated into our society thus have practically not known any other society/country besides this one; and so feel a stronger bond to this society than towards any other. (I know this is somewhat anecdotal, but I am in somewhat the same situation like these people he is talking about and have a lot of friends and colleagues in the same or similar situations: as i have seen and heard from them, all of them have a strong Swiss identity; stronger by far than towards any society the have only known through ties that their parents have to these societies.)

From the man's first sentence I knew this was good. Sadly as Brexit shows people don't want to actually think things through for the longer term. Short term Jingoism to often wins. And I figure the man is really talking about a kind of neo Holy Roman Empire where direct democracy decides (slowly) the direction of historic change. It requires the rolling back of the principle of the Nation state which can sound attractive but it could equally perhaps reopen religious and cultural divisions that to some extent the idea of single Nationalities has suppressed. But I would love us to try however I don't see it happening. Not least because the EU institutions themselves seem to actively oppose direct democracy. Ironically this opens the way for local populists who claim to represent their people . Populists who attract support because people living in Poland, Portugal or Pomerania have no other way to collectively register any shared opposition to things they all see as wrong. And a Europe of the regions is I feel a Uptopian idea that cannot survive exposure to the real winds of human cultural biases. Any genuine European level Direct Democracy (which I am all for) would /should recognize and try to satisfy concerns shared by people from Helsinki to Lisbon from Trondheim to Thessolonika shared concerns I don't doubt exist but how that could be achieved I think would need more than following the Swiss model which the speaker says took centuries to evolve. Modern Technology could maybe help?

The Euro seems on the brink of collapse since 2012...brexit already under way and Italeave also in the works...I honestly think there should be less unaccountable and unelected bureaucracy....The Euro is too complex a system to survive without a more direct democracy. I hope they realize this before they crumble....

Brixit is a disaster for the UK, and it has not actually happened yet. The stresses imposed by Brixit have shown everyone that the UK's system of governance is simply unfit for purpose. In the medium term, never mind the long term, Brixit will destroy the UK. Italy is going to leave the EU like you are going to fly to the Moon by farting... Please tell me which currency is NOT complex? And please tell us all the name of ANY currency which features "...direct democracy"?

@@jh5kl "...except that as always continental Europeans will make exceptions and give all privileges to england, for england to achieve all their goals..."? Where did you get that strange delusion from? There is no sign that either "...continental Europeans...", or ANY EU member or institution, is about to "...make exceptions and give all privileges to england, for england to achieve all their goals..." In the short-term, the UK's economy will shrink as its trade with both its trade with the EU and the rest of the world decreases. Further down the road, the most likely outcome of Brixit is the complete dissolution of the UK, Scottish independence, Irish unification, and, less likely, Welsh independence. Whatever remains of the UK will be both impoverished and diminished.

@@gloin10 - BREXIT is a BLESSING not just for Britain, but for ALL European countries suffering heavily under the totalitarian EU-rule ...... thus by force having their native people replaced by arabs and africans, and by force having their cultures islamized. All responsible citizens of Europe are looking forward to the utter collapse of the totalitarian, undemocratic, islamofile EU ..... and the rescue of the natives of Europe and their unique, diverse nations, cultures and languages.
