Thx for sharing your infos about how it is handled in Laos. The reason for the dowry sounds quite similar as it is in Thailand. However, the dowry can be quite counterproductive, particularly if it is too high, and thus the couple ends up bankrupt or with hardly any money at the beginning of their married life. Most Westerners think it is better if a young couple is financially supported at the beginning of their married life in order to start up a family with kids, instead of having to pay a high dowry and finally having no or hardly money left to start up their family. @@mythai24 That’s true. The Laos weddings I go to I also donate into the wedding boxes to the brides and grooms to start off as newly weds. Normally, the bride’s family arranged the wedding and venue and invite the community to contribute financially into the wedding boxes so finance shouldn’t be an issue just get the parents’ approval maybe challenging especially if the parents are asking for higher price because they don’t approve of the man and parents believe nobody can take better care of their daughter than they can. Daughters are valuable, important,and love and most parents don’t like man taking their daughter away and her accepting a new surname. In the USA couples can elope.

Welcome, and thank you for your feedback and sharing your experience. Sorry to read about your bad experience with your ex-wife. It seems a bit that she was in the dowry business as indeed there are ladies who just marry to get the dowry and then quickly quit the marriage, and then go for another guy to marry to get sin sod again. As said in my video, these days lots of Thais do not pay any sin sod anymore, and among those who still pay very often it is returned after the marriage. If even Thais often or even mostly do not pay, why should a foreigner pay, particularly also as this sin sod custom is so contrary to their own believes about how love and marriage should be. The Thai lady must understand that you come from a different country and culture, and thus compromises need to be found. She can not do everything just on own her terms. A compromise could be that the foreigner just shows the money at the marriage and then gets it back afterwards as many Thais also do it (as said above). This is the maximum what I would recommend to a foreigner. Of course, if a foreigner wants to pay and is happy with it, this is also fine, but as far as I know most foreigners do not really want to pay the sin sod as it is too contrary to their believes with regard of love and marriage.

If your wife and you are happy with it, this is great, but quite a lot of Thai men would not pay any dowry in this case anymore, and as said in the video very often after the wedding is returned to the couple.

You are welcome. Thanks for your good feedback. A weddings and also at funerals people mostly give money in an envelope, but on other occasions or festivities like birthday, Thai New Years, Western New Year, they do mostly not give money, but give gifts if they give something.

thank you for the good feedback. I totally agree. You need to learn the language in order to be able to understand how Thai people really are and in order to know what`s really going on in Thailand. Language is the key to the culture and the people of a country. Thus I just can recommend to anybody to learn Thai well if you plan to live in Thailand.

Thanks for your really good feedback. As I say in my video, just do it the Thai way. There is no reason why a foreigner should pay more than a Thai, actually the opposite should be the case as it is a custom which is really contrary to the Western customs and believes. If a Thai lady or her family ask a foreigner for a higher dowry than they would ask from a Thai men for, they are not really fair and seem to be too much focused on the money aspect, which is not a good sign. If for example a lady who already has kids, and has been married before, and she and her family have a low social status in Thailand, wants a huge dowry from a foreigner, then you can be sure that there is something wrong, and not really about Thai customs anymore, but more about making as much money as possible with the marriage with the foreigner. Anyhow, these days, as said in the video, among Thais very often the dowry is returned after the wedding, and thus this also should be done like this with a foreigner. Best regards

Thanks for sharing your experience. Totally understandable that you feel this way. I would say most Westerners would feel this way as this dowry custom is really contrary to what most Westerners think is right for a wedding. If I lady focuses too much on it, particularly right from the beginning it makes it even worse. There should be a compromise between the 2 cultures. A compromise could be showing the money at the wedding, but then getting it back right afterwards just like lots and lots of Thais do it this way these days anyway as said in the video, and thus it should be fine for your Thai lady, too.

I would say in this case most Thai men would not pay any dowry anymore, and if someone pays most likely not a lot and it is likely that it is returned after the wedding. If she takes care of her parents and still keeps on doing so after the wedding, this is not a reason why dowry must be paid as the wedding does not effect it or change this fact.

Regarding taking care of her parents, would that still be the case were she to leave the country?

@@waymoncowley436 If she has to take care of her parents, she will try to do this from where ever she is, also from abroad.

Most Thai men are also happy if they do not have to pay. I am quite sure that it will be ok if he does not have to pay :) Anyhow as said in the video, these days many Thai men even do not pay a bribe to Thai lady anymore. Often they just show it during the marriage ceremony and get it returned afterwards. Greetings from Bkk :)

Normally after a divorce the sin sod does not need to be returned, but if it is very close to the wedding day and looks like fraud,, then it is worth hiring a lawyer. There are lawyers on the Thai internet offering such services.

As said in the video, these days very often there is no dowry at all or if then often it is returned after the marriage, BUT finally it depends on each case and how the couple and the parents can agree. More over it also depends on the social status of the family of the lady/girl and on the education of her, etc. If they are wealthy, then 250 000 THB or even significantly more could be asked for, but if if they are not then this seems to be too high. I have heard of middle class marriage with a Sin sod of 100 000 THB and if it is somewhere country among people with lower income, it is a couple of ten thousand of THB. However, your case is kind of special, as the son of your gf has made her pregnant, and therefore they want him to marry her, which still can happen even these days, but is not the rule, and thus they perhaps ask for more than normally would be the case. Indeed, not so long ago, Thai women were expected to remain virgins until marriage. When I came to Thailand to study 27 years ago, many women still adhered to this custom. FYI with regard of the wird สินสอด (sin sord): สินสอด (sin sord) does NOT have the meaning fresh....สด (sod) means "fresh" , สอด means to insert or to place, and สิน (sin) means wealth; property, assets. There are quite a few. Don`t it wrong. There are also quite a few Thai people of a lot of money, particularly in Bangkok, but also in other cities. Anyhow, many Thais do not pay Sin Sod anymore these days, and lots of those who pay get it back after the wedding (see video).

@@mythai24 Also, Sin Sood, das "Mutter Geld", war mal dazu gedacht, das wenn der "Junge" zu dem jungfreulichen Mädchen zieht + die Eltern dem Bräutigam dann Land geben, damit er ua dort ein Haus bauen kann oder er zu den Eltern zieht....damit der Junge dann nicht nur knickknack macht und dann das Mädel sitzen lässt. -> Wenn dann bitte die Story richtig erzählen. Ich mag Thai Tradition, ABER: 1. Sind viele "Mädchen" heutzutage sicherlich keine Jungfrau mehr. Geschweige denn "jung". 2. Haben viele eh schon x Kinder oder waren verh. 3. @@mythai24 und JA, mein thail. Nachbar hat auch kein Sin Sood für seine thail. Frau bezahlt. Ich finde es nur manchmal lächerlich, dass kaum die Eltern mitbekommen, dass die Tochter einen Farang als BF hat, diese gleich $$$ sehen.
