HOW THE UNITED STATES STARTED THE WAR WITH JAPAN IN THE PACIFIC 

The Flying Tigers were a brave group of ex-military servicemen formed by the US government as the First American Volunteer Group (AVG).
With 100 P-40 aircraft they fought under the flag of the Republic of China, but they were very definitely a US military operation.
Did this US involvement force the hand of the Japanese? Or was it a defacto declaration of War on the Japanese Empire?
