Perfect! The one activity I can count on! I do tree work on 11 miles of rail trail and it is a never ending job... Keeps me busy, provides good exercise, and I enjoy it. I could do without the Kens and Karens giving me crap about driving on the trail... apparently the magnetic signs on my vehicle and my hat are invisible. 😉 I took Game of Logging training and did a program one time with a trained arborist. He was dead set against using wedges to maintain the kerf while bucking... I couldn't follow his reasoning but wasn't going to debate him in front of the dozen volunteers we were training. I use the wedges regularly! Was that a buck rub I saw at about 9:30? The thing at 25:20 is a "ditch bank blade." I've cut a lot of light brush with mine... It compliments my old Penn Central Rail Road brush hook nicely.
Funny you say that about using wedges when bucking because all the timber cutters say the same thing here. Wedges are for felling and only used as a last resort when bucking. I never say anything to them, of course, but I think to myself but I just saw you get your bar stuck, and it could have easily been prevented by using a wedge beforehand 🤷♂️.
@@KevinsDisobedience I just got another saw, an MS661, and decided to read the manual as I haven't actually read one in years. 😉 I found this little gem in a section on "pull in" which occurs when the chain on the bottom of the bar is pinched: "Use wedges to open the kerf or cut, where possible." I take that to mean we are vindicated! 🤪

I figured you’d enjoy this. Same sorta work you do, but no snakes to worry about and different kinds of trees and brush. That brush hook was the first thing I grabbed after I found it, even prefer it more than the machete. Keeps you away from the work.
Great video! That long handled tool is called a few names, most commonly bank-blade, sling-blade, or briar-hook. I have an old one from true temper. They were popular tools for surveyors because they were good at clearing trails and keeping you out of the mess. That Polaris is sick! Really cool that it has a key fob for the winch. Once again you show us how useful that little electric saw can be. Though it looks like you have plenty of toys for trail work, I recommend picking up a lightweight Hookaroon for trail work. Run the hook through the leaves to turn up any hidden sticks or roots, and provides good leverage for moving stubborn logs. I know you already have a peavy for moving logs, but using a Hookaroon to fling limbs off the trail is so much better than bending down to pick them up. I bought one thinking it would be good for moving firewood around, but a pulp hook is so much better for that purpose. I would have sold it if it weren’t so good on the trail. Wranglerstar could write his name and claim that is how the forest service does it lol. I think what you demonstrated is more correct, except for the part where you cleared the trails🤣 state parks near me are always in bad shape.
Sling blade, eh. I remember the Stephen King movie lol. This one is a true temper as well, but probably bought in the 70s or 80s, I’d guess. I’ll have to look for one of those hooks. You have any suggestions for where and which one to pick up. I started using the sling blade to fling stuff out of the way like a hockey stick lol.
@@KevinsDisobedienceI have a 28inch Hookaroon made by fiskars. Same handle style as your axe. They are around $45 with lifetime warranty. I think it’s overpriced, but most competitors are asking just as much if not more. Only reason I’d recommend the fiskars over a more traditional style like Council tool makes is because it is so lightweight. Also there is a distinction between a pickaroon and a Hookaroon. Hookaroon has a curved hook on the end, which is what you would need for flinging brush.
I’ve always thought doing trail maintenance would be a great job to have. It looked like a nice couple of days you got to spend outside. I think I saw a few opportunities for the big log challenge in this video.
It is fun. I wouldn’t mind doing it most days for work. You’re always on the look out for a big log, aren’t ya lol. It’s not really my thing. But you, Kurt and Mat can have at it lol.
-22F? Must have been this morning. We hit a low of 3F overnight with 20 knt winds gusting to 45 knts here in York Co, PA. Totally brutal. This video reminds me of my childhood, my parents clearing a logging road in the woods behind our house to make a trail to the stream that runs through it. I spent so much of my youth back in those woods. I really miss having wooded land to explore.
That’s real feel with windchill. The actual temp was -3. I’m glad you had something like that growing up. It didn’t always love it, but now I’m so glad I grew up on a farm.
It's so nice to see these older tools being put to use. The old timers knew what they were doing. A mix of the old and the modern is just the ticket. I have a silky katanaboy myself and it definitely takes some time getting used to. Damn thing tires me out. If and when I buy another chainsaw, that battery powered one you have is a real workhorse of a saw. I don't even want to know the price. I hope you and your family have a blessed Christmas. It’s not gunna replace a power saw-at least not at this stage-but it’s worth the money. Does cost as much as a mid size power saw though. I won’t tell you how much 😉. @@KevinsDisobedience I recently found one of those long handled brush hooks but the blade is riveted to the wooden handle so derusting it will be a chore. It's in pretty good shape although the handle does have some small bug holes where the bugs ate into it. I was thinking of filling in the holes with wood putty then sanding the handle down and staining it. What do you think about that idea? The other option is use a straight hickory axe handle to attach the hook too. I'd have to modify the handle a bit to make it work though.

More like 600 if I’m lucky lol. The saw with two batteries and two chains ran me about 1k. Well worth it, in my opinion. While everyone else is pulling and pulling and pullin, I’m half done with the work. That’s a cool shovel. Hand on to it.
For a guy that wears chain mail socks I'm a little surprised you aren't wearing chainsaw chaps or arborist pants. Even those little e-saws can do a lot of damage in a short time. 🩸
