German economy is basically based on import of cheap oil and gas, raw materials, and upstream parts from China, and export of high value-added products. For now, Germany has been cut off cheap oil gas supply from Russia, thus the German energy-intensive industries suffer the most. Imagine if Germany loses the access to the China market - not only the cheap upstream parts, but also a 1.4 billion people market that the German products can sell to.

Peter Zeihan points out that this ban kicks in only after the current allowable expansion of LNG exports from the US has been used up. The expansion in LNG exports that have already been approved would cover all Japanese and European LNG requirements. So it is a political move in the US, but has no real impact in the EU.

@Homo_Sapiens8bln
@Homo_Sapiens8bln 6 месяцев назад
Well, Russia not only uses the barbaric technology of hydraulic fracturing like the United States, Russia produces a considerable part of its gas using the same drilling, which is much more environmentally friendly than hydraulic fracturing. In addition, to liquefy gas you need to spend a colossal amount of electricity, and transportation by gas tanker costs money; it is much cheaper to put gas through a gas pipeline. And the conflict in Eastern Europe was started between the two largest gas exporters, the United States and Russia for the European market, the United States raised the price of $1,000 for its LNG, but since Europe entered into cheap contracts for gas supplies from Russia, the United States decided to stir up a hornet’s nest.

Some people seem to have misunderstood the video, probably because it wasn't as clear as it should've been... However, note the first sentence of the summary under the video: _"The White House has paused all future liquified natural gas export projects."_ This is a (temporary) pause on future LNG expansion, which doesn't affect current supply or prices. The reason the German government is unhappy is that it delays their own future LNG expansion plans and they're (perhaps overly) keen to replace their previous piped NG from Russia with ferried LNG from the USA.

Methane just stays in the atmosphere for 12 years while CO2 stays there for centuries. So, even if Howarth's calculations are correct that LNG has a worse impact on climate than coal (and his article gets accepted in a peer-reviewed journal - not the case today), this will turn after phasing out natural gas. Within 12 years, we will lose the atmospheric heating effect of Methane losses. In the mid-term and long-term, LNG is the better option than coal or oil. Industry will always need LNG until we find a chemical/energy source to replace it. For the rest we should go renewable and nuclear, then when we have solved the expensive storage issue we should move towards closing the nuclear option. Germany closed em before they had a good option to replace it so keep the darn coal until you have and stop making yourself so depending on other countries(you can develop the energy consumption also, like in today's world we waste energy on things like elevators, self opening doors, advertisement signs, places light up like christmas trees 24/7... my point is that there are places to save on consumption).
@amadeuz819
@amadeuz819 6 месяцев назад
When Ukraine joins the EU and Russia is finally forced back to their own land Europe should have enough LNG for the Industry so all you need to do is to get everything else working with an other source like renewable. Like put 10 solar panels on every house and then invest on windmills, even if making a temporary gas that then can be used as energy source is "wasteful" its better than adding CO2 or being dependent on outside sources. As Russia was only a trusted partner for a small time, so is USA. When it comes to "milking the cow or slaughtering it" USA is one of the most greedy. What was done to the nuclear energy was done and is very hard to undo but my point is that you need to stop taking the cheapest option and get your own system.

Germany is never going to be totally energy independent, but this lack of natural resources is one of the reasons why Germany is such an industrial powerhouse.

Don't be so pessimistic, the German new Northsea wind turbine park will ensure the equivalence of 75 big nuclear powerplants, the project is ongoing and will be 50% completed by 2030 and fully by 2050.

Having a former US Senator who is now a shill for the very energy company brought up in the story and given a megaphone is just irresponsible. Mary Landrieu is an example of everything WRONG with our politics.

How about we do this. All the "greens" who don't like LNG agree to give it up and leave the rest of us alone. They would need to stop flying for vacations, cooking, heating their homes, etc. The rest of us will do fine without them.

There are environmental activists who are hypocritical with personal activities that don't match their words but you won't be fine without them because getting rid of them won't change the fact that humans are drastically changing the world in a number of ways and there will be severe consequences from that. 2023 was the warmest year in history and data from this February is expected to show that it was the warmest February in history. It seems that humans have already lost the battle to keep global warming to 1.5 degrees above pre-industrial levels and humans are still pumping lots of CO2 into the atmosphere so things are going to get a lot worse. It's already effecting people. Try to get home insurance in Florida and you'll find that it's very expensive and difficult to get because as businesses insurance companies can't afford to pretend that climate change isn't happening - any insurance company in Florida which pretends that climate change isn't happening will go bankrupt.
