It has been over 100 days of war in Gaza. In that time, Indonesia and Malaysia have affirmed their long-standing support for the Palestinian cause. But siding with Palestine carries some risk for these two Muslim-majority, multi-cultural nations. Conflict in the Middle east had previously been used by extremist and terror groups as recruitment propaganda.
Already, the Indonesian counter-terrorist agency has arrested 59 militants who planned to disrupt the 2024 elections. Meanwhile, teachers in Malaysia were seen “cosplaying” as Hamas fighters during a week where the Israel-Palestine issue was taught in school. Questions have also been raised about a Hamas affiliated group, the Palestinian Cultural Organisation’s continued presence in Malaysia. How can Malaysia and Indonesia express solidarity with Palestine while stay avoiding the slippery slope of extremism?
