The year is 1962 and after 30 plus years of AP Polls the 1962 season would feature the first ever Bowl game between the #1 and #2 team. There would be a lot of chaos and upsets to get there but at the end of the season and the bowl games there would be a definitive College Football National Champion. Michigan State joined the Big 10 in 1950. They were unable to schedule enough conference games to win it and got the Rose Bowl until 1953. They didn't join "just before the 1960's".

Wisconsin ran a minute short of completing the greatest bowl comeback ever. Most people there swear that with one more minute, they’d have won. Southern California won it ingloriously, being outscored 23-0 toward the end, and choosing a safety rather than punting from deep. The Badgers didn’t return to the Rose Bowl for 31 years, but when they did, they won three of them between ‘94 and 2000.

They didn't "choose" a safety. The center snapped the ball over the punter's head. Perhaps if Wes-can-son would have played better in the first 3 quarters, they might have had a chance. Regardless, SC was the better team and proved it.

So I was looking through your programs of How The Year Was Won on RU-vid and I noticed there isn't one on 1961. There is one on 1960 and 1962. Was 1961 not posted?

I just haven't done it. I may. I'm not covering every year in order. But there are a lot of years I wanted to cover in the 1960s, so I may get around to 1961

Just to clarify: the AP poll went after the bowl games in 1965 season. Then, for some reason, they reverted to selecting the champion at the end of the regular season for the 1966 and '67 season. For the 1968 season, they decided to wait for the bowl games to select their champion. The UPI waiting until '74 season to do that.

There was no official national tile, so any team that upset no. 1 in a bowl was free to consider themselves national champions.

@@brianarbenz1329 Not correct. The AP and UPI were the standard barometers of who won the NC. The Football Writers Poll was sometimes cited as well, but only when a team was not "crowned" by the AP/UPI. 1965 UCLA upset #1 Michigan State in the '66 Rose Bowl and never claimed the Nations Championship; same for Washington beating #1 Minnesota in the '61 Rose Bowl. Also, Texas beat #1 Alabama in the '65 Orange bowl and never made a claim. The few bowl games that were played back then were seen as a reward for good season, not to affect the rankings. Luckily, they changed it later.

Wisconsin fan here. I think you explain the best you can to people who only know the modern BCS or now playoff system. My whole childhood I was a bit ignorant and thought if Wisconsin had won the Rose Bowl they would have won the national championship, but as you point out, that is not the case. USC was guaranteed the national championship regardless of the outcome of the Rose Bowl.

Yeah thats why I covered the season cause it was one of the few seasons when the nation champ was picked before the bowl games and I dont think many people knew that, that was the way it worked then. But thanks for watching and please subscribe

@@WrongedSportsActually one of the many seasons the mythical National Champions were chosen before the bowl games. Bowl games go back to the early 1900's. The National Champ was selected before the bowls until the mid to late 1960's

Thanks for watching. And yes they were but this 1962 season for Rice was the start of them being bottom dwellers in the old SWC. Plus I really mentioned it because of the JFK speech

@@WrongedSports I think you could fairly well say that (agreed). They did perk up to a fairly good 6-4 mark the next year (4-3 in SWC play), but that would be their last "hurrah." It seems to me that the combo of Texas and Arkansas' growing powerhouses combined with the Houston Oilers franchise (AFL at the time) worked in combo over time to lessen Rice's status among the good (sometimes very good) football programs.

Great video, but you kind of made it sound like the polls determined who went to the Rose Bowl for a 1 vs 2 matchup. In reality, the Big Ten and PAC-8 (as it was known then) already had created the contract that put their champions in the game exclusively.

Yes but its not my fault the polls made a 1 loss Wisconsin the #2 team instead of a few other teams that maybe should've been.

@@willmuny9201 ole Miss in 1962 played a 9-1 Memphis State team and a 7-4 Houston team in out of conference play. Those are considered very good out of conference teams to play. Ole Miss weren't going to play Big Ten and Western teams cause they didn't play integrated teams at this point. Ole Miss beat LSU who were 9-1-1. If this was modern times Ole Miss would be #2 over a 1 loss Wisconsin team and play USC but this was during the time of bowl ties and non integrated schools so yeah

@@jamesfields2916 I know how Ole Miss felt. Notre Dame beat FSU in 93 in the season. Then FSU took the title. They gave Bowden a lifetime achievement championship at Notre Dames expense.
