How 'The Zone of Interest' Re-Invents Visual Storytelling 

The violence in this film is the indifference. The compartmentalized emotions. In the end, his own body begins to reject his repression. His subconscious mind is revolting against his perverse values and misaligned motivations.

Let's face it that we are all capable of evil by compartmentalising our thoughts and feelings. When confronted by vegans who question us whether we have compassion for farm animals, we respond by eating meat in front of them. We refuse to know the personalities of "our food", we mute out their last screams.

My take on the ending - he is understanding the true horror of his actions - it’s almost as if he has watched with Holocaust Museum footage like we just have. The music becomes extremely loud - and the only other time the music is heard is during the scene where the girl leaves the apples. I’m not religious but I heard this as ‘the voice of god’, awful and impossible to ignore, and both the girl and Hoss are reacting to their conscience at those points. I read about Hoss after watching the movie, and read that he wrote to his son on his deathbed, after apparently repenting and returning to Catholicism, saying ‘listen to the voice of your heart’.

i bought this movie & have watched it twice already. I notice something new each time. Everyone should see it.

I just finished the book when I heard this was coming out. I love Sexy Beast and Under the Skin, but like the latter which is also based on a book ( I like the movie more ) he only really uses the source material as a spring board and so they have little relation to the source. A bit like Kubrick. So the idea of the banality of a family life where the father is a pretty nondescript and prosaic character who just happens to be the commandant of Auschwitz I expected and felt ( on first viewing) not quite enough to substain the whole film. It has it's moments ( the sound and the music are superb), visually it's impeccable. I will watch it again and I'm sure I will get more form it. Kudos to Jonathon Glaser tough.

The name of this kommandant bears a “umlaut” (dubbel points on the ö) Höss, and that makes is sound like Hus or Hùs. Please correct your pronunciation accordingly. This villain was a real nasty Jerry.

Another crushing element of this film is the utter lack of sentimentality. We find no cathartic relief through a mournful score or emotional manipulation. We are left to steep in the stark absurdity of a blatant misalignment of human nature.

i didn't find it hard to watch except for a few scenes (eg the teeth). If you've seen Cabaret, Good, The Counterfeiters, Conspiracy, Boy with the Striped Pajamas, the idea of indifferent banality has been covered before. I might have been more affected by the sound if i'd seen it in a cinema.

Hello. It's just a movie. If you look closely, the technique used by Glazer just looks like a reality show like the "Big Brother" (for countries where this reality show exists, you will see the similarity), with the still cameras. I bet if other filmmakers start making more films like this, you'll find it boring yourself. I don't see anything that surprising.
