The police wanted to make sure she'd go to jail, and not take the chance, she'd get off, or be assigned to a mental institution. If she was on LSD, she could plead the case she was out of her mind, and normally doesn't do this, so you may have trouble getting a conviction. Police did the right thing in this case, in my opinion. One guy where I live, cut off some guys head sitting next to him on the bus, in front of all these passengers. He blamed it on not taking his medication, and was back on the street in just 2 years, providing he agrees to take his meds. Think the guys name was Vincent Li or something like that. True story. She could have pleaded temporary insanity, while on LSD, and maybe could have got off light.
