Agreed! When Monica and I paid off our debts, we took advantage of the different ways our hospital offered us time and a half and double time pay in order to get rude of our debt as quickly as possible.

"...and I was living with my parents" THAT is privileged. Having parents who don't just kick their kids once they go to College or immediately after and allows people to start a career and pay for debts. Still...that's called privilege and only then she was able to be successful. But let's not just focus on the "method" but her safety net. And that's how it should be USAers kick their kids out just like the market wants so these desperate young people already in debt will accept ANY job and work for less than what they are worth. This creates a constant offer of cheap labour that companies and banks love it, since they profit over this .

In California, the normal pay period is 24 to 32 hours a week, so when do you begin earning OT. Is it anything over the 64 hours?

California law states that any number of hours worked from the 8th to 12th in one day is supposed to be paid at 1.5x your regular rate, regardless of how many hours you're scheduled to work per week. But in addition to that, if you exceed 40 hours of work in 1 week, you will get paid 1.5x your regular rate for any amount of time worked over that for the week. There is a caveat to this though, some shift workers may have different rules as long as they agree to it in the job offer. For example, my hospital doesn't pay 12-hour-shift employees time and a half after their 8th hour of work but do pay them evening or night shift differential for the entire shift.

Let's look at the facts though, the average life expectancy in the US is 77 years. And 50% of women live til they're 90 years old. So, I think leaving your retirement years to chance because you're afraid of dying before then is much riskier than working hard early on, investing your money, and taking it easier with an early retirement plan. And, if you do it aggressively enough, you can enjoy more of your life without having to worry about being broke all the time.

Nothing is ever promised, but keep in mind as well too your health is an investment put great emphasis on your nutrition, exercise, stress management, and Sleep Quality. Remember, even at retirement age you want to have the best quality of life as possible

I'm an older nurse. This is my advise. Eat healthy, avoid assignments with heavy lifting, work all the overtime but take time for yourself. Learn all you can about investments. Make sure you put at least 10% of your salary in your 401K Roth or non Roth. Open a brokerage account invest in mutual funds. Research them. You will be financially independent in your 60s. It works.
