This is essentially how I do mine. However I rotate the hub as Im tightening it down to binding. Then I back off the nut and finger tight. If the hole is just not there, I tend to go just go a little tighter until the hole appears. I test the wheel for slop and movement and as long as shes spinning great i am good to go. People are unsure if you are one hair loose or one hair tight, I think as long as you are in that ballpark you are good to go! You just dont want it super loose or super tight.

Nice procedure. But why does it seem that the cotter pin hole always lies somewhere between "too loose, it will wobble" and "that's too tight it will bind and get hot"? It's always a comprise and finger crossing venture.

set on the bind then back off until no bind

What to do though, if your cv axle doesn't use castle nut

If the hole doesn't align put a washer behind the nut so that the hole lines up, do not back up to the next hole.

Im sorry what??? My manual calls for 180 ft lbs. 2010 jeep compass. Are you saying that's wrong?
