Correct torquing procedure done on front wheel hub units using a Ford Explorer as an example.
Detailed Description
Watch Russ, an ASE certified tech, demonstrate the steps needed to achieve proper torque. Starting with the Ford Explorer on a car lift, Russ demonstrates the first part of the correct torquing procedure. After the SUV is lowered onto the ground he demonstrates how to correctly perform final torque on a vehicle.

I see so many repair videos with people not following this procedure with the car not under load for doing a final torque. Perhaps they are the thumbs down people.

100% impossible to fully torque the axle nut down.
@josevelasco3245

Walter Frederick you can do it but have to have 2nd person step on brakes or try to wedge something i between the rotor ridges on its side and brake caliper. I’ve tried the pry bar on the studs but I can only get so much power out of that alone. My only question is I thought I can tighten to spec all in the air. Should I be tighten 75% in the air and then final on the ground? That would make life easier but never had problems the other way....yet 😂

Can you tell me what the torque is on the 3 bolts of the hub bearing assembly on a 2005 GMC Sierra 1500 2 wheel drive truck? It doesn’t have the axle nut just has 3 bolts on back. Thx

Are the torque specifications specific to the wheel bearing or to the vehicle itself? In other words, if I used Moog instead of SKF, would the specifications remain the same, or change due to the manufacturer's specifications?
@SKFPartsInfo
@SKFPartsInfo 7 лет назад
Thanks for watching. The torques specification we provide are the OEM manufacturer specifications. SKF hubs are built to meet or exceeded the OEM specification in design and would use the OEM manufacturer torque specifications for installation. You would need to contact other suppliers if you need their specification information.

Is there a difference between setting the preload with the wheel installed and on the ground, than not? If so, what is it? Thanks.

I'm a novice mechanic attempting some work on the wheel. You mentioned that the hub nut torque is 184 ft/lb. Are you using "hub nut" and "axle nut" interchangeably and, if not, what is the torque spec for the axle nut on the "02 Explorer? Thanks.
@SKFPartsInfo
@SKFPartsInfo 8 лет назад
+Bobby Dennis It should be identified as an axle nut, but sometimes they could be referred to as a hub nut. The torque spec for the axle nut on the '02 Explorer on which we performed this repair is 184 ft/lbs. Please note: It always best to check with the manufacturer for precise torque specs no matter which area of the vehicle you are working on.

17-24 ft lbs is what I found for 1998 rear wheel drive Ford Explorer. Does this sound correct? That is a big difference from 184 ft lbs. I know this vid is for a different year and probably a 4x4. I looked it up in your torque guide and it says FT2. What is FT2?

@SKFPartsInfo

FT2 is the Adjustment Procedure code that is looked up in the back of the torque spec guide under 'Adjustment Proceduer'. It reads: "Tighten hub nut to 17-24 ft-lbs/22-34 Nm while turning wheel. Loosen nut 175 degrees and tighten to 17 in-lbs/2 Nm". The FT2 procedure is correct for a 1998 2WD Explorer. The Procedure in the video is for installation of an SKF X-Tracker hub assembly unit. The 1998 2WD Explorer torque procedure is used when replacing taper bearings and seal in a rotor and hub unit. Different types of torque are needed depending on the design of the part and the year of the vehicle.

Good to see someone on here tell how much torque on the spec truck I been searching around after installing a hub on a 2005 chevy blazer 4x4 and the hanyes manual says : 103ft lbs which seems light and the wheel had a humming to it and more on that corner when turning that side 180ft lbs is the right torque as to other chevy post and for the size of the ford ranger confirms my thoughts

I don't understand the concept of preloading the wheel bearings with the axle nut torque in domestic and asian cars. European cars don't have this preload, they simply have a small 14mm bolt secured in a bore at the end of the axle shaft - no high torque, no bearing preload. Why do the car makers with axle nut made is so difficult when it can be done so simple ?

I used a Rigid battery impact that put about 180 ft. lbs. on the nut . Emergency repair 🤦. Now I'm worried that using the Impact for initial torque may have damaged it. Had to tighten it an additional 20 lbs. to get it to spec using a regular torque wrench . Please help . The torque specs both in the technical service manual and the new hub specified 186 ft. lbs . This seems too tight .

Fuck the torque spec!Tighten the axle nut with an impact.I tighten the axle nut with an impact and no comebacks with failures.Can't fully torque the axle nut down.One mistake shown,jerking on the torque wrench.This gives you a false torque reading.You don't jerk on it,pull on it

Listen!! You put 184 ft lbs on any baring and it's locked up!! The proper tork is, tighten it down till it don't move, then loosen it 1/4 turn!! There's no baring gonna turn even if you just put 20 ft lbs on it!!

Double clicking a torque wrench is a good way to be sure you have reached the recommended setting. It will not over torque the axle nut. Thanks for watching!
@davidgruen7423
@davidgruen7423 6 лет назад
Arun Narayan you can click a thousand times as long as every time you stop right when you hear the click, it is a good tip for amateurs tho. I can guarantee you if you have never tested your skill on a torque tester you will never get the feel right, I have yet to see a person (including myself) who can get to the correct torque on a torque tester without some practice(i tried five times and I am good afterwards)
