Marketing is always changing- probably one of the fastest-changing disciplines in the world.
But over the last 10 years, something vastly different and much more transformative has occurred.
A true shift in a thousand-year-old industry has happened right under our noses, right under our watch. In the last 10 years, newspapers died. All print media is dying. Television, as we grew up with is dying too.
For a while, this shift into digital marketing was a dream for advertisers: more data collected from users, more ways to target them, to guess what they want and push it for them.
But privacy is more and more crucial to consumers using digital devices. We are blocking those tracking pixels, the ads on those media pages are noise that we are evolving to ignore- or that we can just pay to get rid of.
About Slidebean
Slidebean is a platform for founders to scale their startups. Our platform offers everything you need to build your startup, your pitch deck, set up your company, and start gaining traction.
Our team of experts can also help you write and design your pitch deck and build the financial model for your startup.

Advertisers shot themselves in the foot. Before the invention of ad blockers, I was completely fine with billboard ads, header ads, footer adds, sidebar ads. We browsed the web for years without using an ad blocker. But then they got greedy with pop ups, pop unders, fake buttons, autoplay videos. Today many people think ads are synonymous with scams and malware, and that browsing the web without ad blockers is dangerous.
@eltiolavara9
@eltiolavara9 7 месяцев назад
YEAH! and the internet has become so littered with ads that you almost need an adblocker to look stuff up in peace, which renders all those ads useless and for some reason they decide to fix the problem by flooding the people who don't have adblockers yet with even more ads, which makes them install adblockers too there's constant ads in every possible space, yet nobody's looking at them
@Bustermachine

@@eltiolavara9 I've all but ceased using recipe sites. I just bought some used cookbooks. Pro-tip, if you don't cook a lot, or getting into it, there's lots of cookbooks for beginners that include a 'techniques' section with beautifully laid out pictures that show you how to slice an onion or cut up a chicken. You don't have to youtube for that.

Today many people don't think when an app wants to access your Bluetooth your contacts or has a TOS that whatever you type in their platform, chat or not can be used to market you and people don't know how much data is gathered about them and with the rise of LLM / AI it's matter of time until all of this data will be put to use properly and you won't be able to escape ... the tracking, the ads, the algorithm.
@WanderlustWonderscape
@WanderlustWonderscape 7 месяцев назад
You want to blame the web sites, not the advertisers. It is the "greedy" web sites that allow those ads and decide how many there are. The problem today is that people create web sites that answer frequently asked questions, but instead of answering the question, they contain tons of word salad that forces you to dig through the ads to find the answer. The web site gets paid for each of those ads, and you get bamboozled. This is why RU-vid and Reddit are fast becoming more popular search tools than Google.

TikTok finally made me feel old because I simply hate using it. There’s this manic intensity to it that I find immediately off putting, coupled with how passive my interactions with it feel. I can’t explain it but it feels like social media crack. I tried to understand but ultimately felt like I got nothing of value in my life from using it.

yea it's purposely designed to be addictive AF.. I deleted my account many many times. I started a new one.. but I don't have the app on my phone. Many people feel mature or superior because they don't use TikTok. I think that's silly, I don't use it for the same reasons I wouldn't try hero*n or c*ke but that doesn't make me better or more mature than anybody, kids use it, parents use it, grandparents use it, also people get good feeds if they train their algorithms well enough but obviously if you only like and watch memes and people in underwear it's going to keep giving you that, maybe you are actually not mature enough to use it.

The more marketing a brand does, the less inclined I am to actually buy it, because I dislike ads. I want to discover brands myself, develop interests on my own instead of getting it forced upon me by ads or copycatting other people (influencers). My prediction is that more and more people will get "ads fatigue" like me and marketeers should focus on how to make brands "findable" - not "visible". If people are interested, they'll come to you - if they're able to find your product, brand or store.

@QoraxAudio
@QoraxAudio 7 месяцев назад
@@TheYars07 I don't exactly know for daily brands, but for things that involve hobbies, it's very easy, just make sure to make all sorts of informative videos. For example: if I'm into records and turntables, make some interesting videos about the basics, the inner workings, etc. You can use your own products as examples, like the turntable you're selling. Create some interesting content that's focused on providing useful info, it takes some time, but providing that service WILL be rewarded in the long run (just takes some time for people to stumble upon your content). Do some interesting battles/shootouts between products... some fun experiments like the mythbusters used to do... make a "how it's made" video... etc... For other product categories, like the crap I just randomly grab in the supermarket without giving it a second thought... idk tbh...

well, I genuinely hate tiktok, it's literally ruining brains, let alone marketing. But let's be honest, the culprit here is how much advertisers intoxicated the user experience of doing every single thing on the web: browsing a page, listening to a song, watching a video, you name it - it's not just 'noise' that we are 'evolving to ignore', it's awful! How can a brand expect me to buy anything from them when I get bombarded everywhere with their intolerable ads? I will *specifically* avoid that brand instead and , when possible, buy from a competition brand

It's so weird to me to see instagram seen as the start of user generated content, when forums were a thing since the start of the internet. It would be more apt to say social media was able to generate cheap easy content like how the writer's strike popularized reality tv, similarly cheap easy content. Reality tv, like social media content, has become deeply scripted by people that are fueled by a hunger to become famous by showcasing any kind of behaviour that will put a spotlight on them.

What I hate about influencers is the lack of QUALITY. Every product placement is done so cheaply and sleazy that it degrades the domains of marketing and media. Quality doesn't even matter anymore, it seems. A well written, well edited, well performed creative piece MIGHT get a few thousand views, but a moronic video of a "famous" teenager doing a stupid dance while holding an energy drink gets hundreds, if not, millions of views. The world has turned into a dopamine-hacked clown world where the internet narcissists are winning the game. 🤡

i quit watching ads .Not here or anywhere else . I know that kind of makes me an A Hole by not supporting the content creators but u know that's what happens to people when they grow up being able to pop popcorn by the time all the advertisements were done fast forwarding on a rented block buster VHS. When I pay for cable then satellite television and have to watch ads. Then I upgrade from VHS to DVD just to find more ads I can't skip past. I remember renting DVDs putting them in the computer running the software and ripping them to put on another rewritable DVD and then watch that copy just so I didn't have to be bothered with the intro ads. It made me ill I just paid for this movie Why are you forcing me to watch advertisements. I can go to my DVD collection now and the ads I couldn't skip on my original DVD player are still there. So now I don't watch any advertisements not on RU-vid not anywhere else. Sorry I have exceeded my lifetime limit on how many hours I will allow myself to spend of my limited lifespan watching advertisements. Okay, in your counter, you forgot so much: The stuff in your background. The font style of any google page. The ad _sounds_ . Materials like the fact that in the ad they use retro lamps and wooden workplaces in a particular style. Everything is ads and taste templates. Your hairstyle. Your language. People will google your barber. Your shirt. your watch. Rode microphone and all search suggestions. Brandnames as you say them. colors associated with brands. One can probably argue that your video contains 100x more ads than you count. .... And you show Trump and his wife and the US flag, the CNN logo, a CNN-typical text box in white and blue, but your counter is neither shown nor counting. Are you joking? Cobie Smulders. Living in a certain state. Prompting a way of living. promoting a way of fact-assessment. projecting american history as history. promoting people of color. All these are advertisements. TV36. OBS Studio. Every single song and band in the itunes list?! this channel. the producer. Every search result, every table, etc is an ad for google. narrations around a term, contexts, time-lines around narrations, narrations positioning a role of a brand or supporting object... And there was never an ad-free time of youtube. Why do you think do people present themselves on youtube? They advertise themselves, their beliefs, their thoughts. The fact that it is around the year 2000 and not 1400, as in the islamic calendar. Every equiment you use or is shown.

You thumbnail is inadequate, the Macintosh ad on Superbowl was useless: costed a lot (being directed by Ridley Scott and shown on Superbowl), it didn't SHOW THE PRODUCT, and Mac didn't sold well AT ALL because it was expensive, prone to failure, had too little memory, and the ad did nothing to sell it, most people didn't knew what the ad was about thinking it was for the brand not for the product. It almost broke Apple, that was why Jobs was ousted by John Sculley. Apple only solved problems with Mac long after that, what was avoiding Apple to sink was still Apple II that kept selling while Jobs wanted to drop it (again in case you didn't understand: drop the only thing that was making money for Apple). Sculley was made the villain after failing to fix Apple after Jobs almost destroying it. It is time to use critical reasoning and stop regurgitating Jobs myths. The only marketing that worked from this ad was for Jobs cult of personality.

Ads during the TVC/Print/Radio ("traditional media") era was all about top-of-mind. The intent was to wedge their product so tightly in your mind, at the highest priority levels, so that the next time you're on that aisle looking to buy something in that product's category, their brand is at the top of your decision-making. Or maybe to even make you buy something you didn't know you wanted, but, hey your brain went back to that ad you saw on TV and the barrier for entry for that product isn't high, so why not? Like my ad mentor in uni said, if an ad makes someone immediately go out and buy something, that's amazing. But that wasn't the intent of the ad. Top-of-mind at the point of decision-making on what to buy, or even IF to buy, was the objective. Which is partly why a small hobby of mine is to note what's at the Point-of-Purchase racks while waiting in line to pay. Because PoP is a fun exercise in getting someone to buy something more. I also hate how, with all my ad and PR training, PoP stuff still gets me. I think I DO want that small bar of Snickers.

TikTok as a platform is problematic though, because of its ties to the Chinese government and the fact that the algorithm is kind of a black box. There, now go watch something else.

Great video., very interesting. I would never use TikTok as it's owned by the Chinese government and they are collecting the data, on everyone.

brand having to reinvent themselves to the content platforms is NOT a good thing. there are literal laws on the books to make demarcations lines between brands and shows on TV. becasue children could not differentiate their cartoon from the ads. THIS, is EXACTLY the same battle. marketing is disgusting.

You know, for us non-american, TikTok is a danger equal to Facebook or Instagram. Just because something is American in origin doesn't really mean is any safer than something that's not. I'm not saying TikTok isn't bad in a way, just saying that thinking that other platforms are better just because they are American is something no sane parson would take as a valid argument... 😒

LOL "if" China is control??? It's simple, the Tictok of China promotes people learning and being productive and the one everyone else uses has people eating tide pods for a challenge. If you think they are not already in control what do you think they would do if they were? lol not in control....

I never used TikTok and probably never will. It's a "solution" for a problem which doesn't exist.. And apparently the only thing it does well is making people waste their own time. 😏

So how do I know that this video, which is about how marketing is now different, isn't influenced by the sponsor's marketing goals? This video is trying to tell us how TikTok ruined marketing... but what if that's actually just what the sponsor wants the viewer to think so that they naturally come to the conclusion that the sponsor is the "solution" to this "problem", when in fact it's all just one great big ad?

TikTok shop is making me not want to be on TikTok just like what happened with Instagram. It is ruining the platform imo. Am I guilty of exploiting it for extra income? Yes, but I would still be happy if they ended it

Nobody watches cable anymore because nobody has the time to watch random bs when we can select exactly what we want to view. Nobody listens to radio anymore because they don't play anything new and are rehashing the same damn songs that are 20+ years old. Last time I tuned into a rock radio station, they were playing guns n roses and ac/dc. I mean really?! What about sleep token, vola, cosmodrome, or even fade? Or literally anything released in the past decade. Cable and radio became out of touch and got left behind.

Ah yes, the "tiktok algorithm is scary good" nonsense again, this is the mindset of poor marketers. For every marketing idea that you have on a creative generic topic when you try and look for it, It does not exist anywhere on social media. The algorithm is not "scary good", you grew to like the video that was fed to you based on similar traits. For the content to suit or to be liked by the viewer the content has to exist or be made out there, we grow to like content, not the other way around. The tiktok algorithm being scary good is a falacy, for them to curate content based on our prefrences they would need those interactions/input from the user, which in this case is skipping videos we dislike, but If it were that good after a while we wouldnt even need to skip any other suggested videos or the very least skipping videos becomes a rare occurance, but the issue here is that this would result in their algorithm having less data to work on in suggesting you newer content. I am amazed at how this video understood the concept of how our brains have been normalized to ignore noise (according to us as the viewer) but could not correlate that to the tiktok videos that we did skip, debunking the point that the tiktok algorithm is "scary good". The reason that tiktok marketing is working so well is that most traditional marketing acts like a billboard meaning that you as the audiance can choose to ignore it, the same way this video explains (tv, fb, ig, print, product placement, etc.). But with tiktok the advertising/marketing BECOMES the content, It's not really possible on tiktok to break from your content to promote something else (the same way this video did), that is just asking for your video to be skipped.

I don't see much of a point to using Tiktok. You can not get any reliable information from Tiktok, or tell anything interesting. The absolute peak of value it could add is mildly funny memes and recipe ideas. Something to do when taking a shit and you don't want to use your brain, even then it's competing with podcasts and short RU-vid videos.

23:23 I don't think we are ever "late" to anything, there is always some blindspot, some unfulfilled wishes that we haven't pay enough attention or have enough experience or resources to seize the opportunity to exploit it. But I think most of all is: we have fun doing what we do, creating informative and helpful content for people, either it's writing, drawing or photographs or videos, if it's no longer fun, it's dead. Thanks all the people at Slidebean for such an eye opening video. I too, have not adapted quick enough for this short form videos.
