How Titanic's Swimming Pool Worked

The Great Big Move

Olympic and Titanic were not the first ships to feature swimming pools (or baths) for passengers. However, they were among the first and this was a feature reserved for premier ocean liners at the time. How did the swimming bath aboard the ship work? Was it like swimming pools on ships today or swimming pools ashore? Find out in this video.
The Great Quick Move is a series of shorter videos on narrower topics than those discussed in the main Great Big Move video series.

I never liked the Titanic swimming pool and room. I find it disturbs me. Not sure exactly why, but it does. Great that you pointed out the "rolling" problem. I don't think like a "Sea Person", so I had never even thought of such a thing! I am very interested in the old steamers and "the golden age of passenger liners", but when I am on solid dry land. I was forever traumatized as a kid when I saw "A Night to Remember". I don't do boats. Great show!

I think as shipboard swimming pools were still in their infancy, it was enough to have steps, a handrail and water to swim in. On QE2, the pools were more lavish but there were no portholes and the water was salt. On today’s ships, there is always lots of light and fresh, chlorinated water. Salt water is clean and good for the skin but you can feel a bit crusty afterwards. I think the Titanic/Olympic passengers were most impressed - well, those who swam as it was not a common sport then.
@Dwarg91

I believe I'm right in saying that the swimming pool was sealed off by the closing of the water tight doors as the last sailor left the area, meaning it was entirely contained when the ship sank. I wonder how well it may be preserved. The portholes would have blown at some point, but they would be the point of ingress for marine life, and I think they're submerged.

Probably due to the conditions Post-WW1. Olympic was already very popular in her own right so I guess that they must have thought that spending money to refurbish the swimming bath was pointless. Also, Majestic had a pretty nice pool. She was also the largest ship in the world until 1935 and as a result most people would have been drawn more to Majestic as she was larger and newer so they probably didn't need to fix the pool on Olympic

@TheGreatBigMove
@TheGreatBigMove Год назад
It may be so that 99% of the countries which have access to RU-vid use the metric system. However, more than 50% of my audience is from countries which use the imperial system primarily. Using both systems would be far too cumbersome for a channel which discusses sizes and distances frequently. Therefore, I decided a long time ago to choose one system and I chose the one which my audience primarily uses (and which most of my sources use). No matter what my decision was on this matter, there were going to be drawbacks. Sometimes you have to pick your poison.
