Replace read with finish in the new title...its still clickbait. And you're honest coz you're not "reading" the books but still sort of finishing (more like absorbing the main content/idea) them using your 'Summary Method'.

After reading 19 books( 3 Fiction, 16 Non-fiction) , since October 2020. There's one thing I have to say, reading more book isn't the hardest part, infact it is the easiest. Remembering the lessons from the book and applying it daily in your life is the hardest part. Trust me, reading more book isn't going to improve your life. Applying what you read will.

Hey Ali. I usually enjoy your videos, but I disagree with this method. It's not just about getting the core idea of the book. I know that you're writing a book right now. Wouldn't you like your reader to get the depth of the book by reading it entirely and grasping the minute and important details of the idea you want to present? If each book(non-fiction) is based around an idea or a concept, then you're gonna have 1000 big ideas each year. What are you going to do with them? If you have so much input, the value you ascribe to each idea diminishes. Quality over quantity in this case, definitely. I don't mind reading 20-30 books that I enjoy each year and take away the key ideas from them that I can use in my everyday life. There's a lot of content out there, good stuff too. There's no need to devour everything if it's not valuable to you. Everything doesn't have to be about productivity.

"Everything doesn't have to be about productivity" ..true..but if someones not interested, then their just not interested, imagine he comes across a summary of a book that he hates..why would he continue reading if he's not interested or if he doesn't see its ability to satisfy his intectual desires..so he moves on to another and another if he has to. You said not everything has to be about productivity...even you know that book reading is all about productivity, because if you didn't see it worth your time and energy, you wouldn't continue ..its the same with ali.. the only difference is that he just doesn't believe he has to read the entire book to find whats worth his time..maybe your love for reading is even more than his, so there's another thing too man

I am a huge fan of your motivation videos, but I think reading books should not be about only numbers. The more we focus on grasping the idea behind it or the more we focus on how entertaining the story is, the more our reading habits will be successful and reliable.

If you’re reading books that can be summarized like that and you’re able to process multiple of them a day, you’re reading bad books. Read better, deeper, more difficult books that force you to take ur time. What’s the value in this?

Agree, he needs to read harder and more thought inspiring books that are difficult to summarise (I find the summaries for these types of books are often lacking and miss most of the important insights). He also needs to realise that you can read 1000 books and get nowhere. Most top CEOs do read, but they place action over reading any day of the week. They often read 12-maximum 50 books really well rather than filling their head to the brim of surface level info that won’t be used

I agree with your point that reading is inaccurately put on a pedestal and book count tracking is a vanity metric, but that shouldn’t be conflated with saying you should only bother to consume books that are easier to digest and can be read or summarized without effort. You want to be a gym shark athlete with toned muscles to raise your romantic capital or whatever, but that’s purely a vanity measure, you can be completely healthy with a good diet and cardio, only mild resistance training for muscle maintenance. Why bother to be a gym shark athlete if it’s only for the approval of other people, instead spend your lifting time jogging and you will run 1000 miles a year. Of course we do things that require effort that aren’t required, and sure they aren’t always fun, but I’ve never finished a hard or long book that I wish I hadn’t bothered to read, just like a gym shark athlete doesn’t regret all those mornings they woke up sore and stiff as a board. And to clarify I haven’t finished every book I’ve started, and you shouldn’t have to. I quit because I find I cannot understand enough of the text or it’s poorly written, but I certainly wouldn’t claim I’ve read those books and I wouldn’t pretend to have understood their full contents by rattling off a summary of their poignant messages. Of course I don’t read a lot of pop psy, I have you for that. And the method you propose is only seeming to swap out one glorified falsehood, that reading hard books is praiseworthy, for another, that acquiring vast amounts of knowledge is praiseworthy. But someday we will die Ali, as per the difficult, boring meditations of Marcus Aurelius. Whatever happens after that point, it’s difficult to imagine that the amount of hard books you struggled through, the amount of muscle mass you acquired, or the amount of nonfiction you distilled into notion will have any use. Yes, learn lifelong. Prioritize knowledge volume over struggle, self realization, and imagination? I guess that’s not as easy a decision as this video makes it sound. Big fan, but this ain’t it chief. I read about ten books a year and people still mistake me for an intellectual so to all the people who read 1000 summaries or finish 100 books just to tell people that number, you’re trying wayyyyy too hard Edit: also the irony of you telling people to watch the whole video before commenting smh

@@ChrisDhegarty You're spot on mate. Perhaps I don't agree with the last paragraph about him "knowing better" or with him being a "talented doctor". Firstly, he is clearly aware of what he is doing; he has been uploading this mumbo-jumbo for months now. Secondly, although he does seem to have received good grades during his studies, I don't think this necessarily makes him a good doctor. His moral stand as a doctor could certainly be questioned considering he decided to create this piffle then help the NHS during a bloody global pandemic, which was, and still is, massively understaffed.

My personal method for reading more books per year (and remembering what I actually read). 1) Following my natural curiosity - if you're curious you'll naturally read more and you'll naturally retain whatever you're reading. 2) Stop reading when I'm bored - honestly it's totally ok to stop reading a book whenever it becomes boring or is no longer useful. Ali also mentions this in the video and its completely true. 3) Read on a need to know basis instead of a just in case basis. If you're reading something to help you with an active problem, again, you'll read more and you'll be putting into action what you read, which will help you retain the knowledge long term. These few changes completely changed my life, without them, I never would have found information that has now completely changed my life. I hope it helps you too 💙

This is dumb. This completely destroys the process of discovery within a book. And how am I supposed to know what I want out of a book? This also is hugely disrespectful to authors. A book is not a TikTok. You’re supposed to read the whole thing to understand the whole thing. I’m not some telekinetic telepathic book critic either. If it’s like 4/5 stars, who cares if I “already understood the whole idea, story, and all the little details because I’m built different” 2 pages in. New quality information, why would I not take it all in? And even if it’s not “quality” in your eyes, this is how you systematically dodge all the ideas you disagree with For example, 12 Rules For Life by Jordan Peterson. You can just look up the twelve rules in a bulleted list- “haha I already understood the whole book. I’m so smart, I saved so much time.” No but if you actually read the book, you’ll be like “Wow, so many new insights, so many new connections” or “Hm, I’m not sure I agree with these ideas, but that’s an interesting way of thinking.” The hubris in thinking you just know everything and know what’s important before you’ve even opened the book. And then you go out flaunting “I read a thousand books.” Get the f*ck outta here

I do agree that, you can’t get all the insights of the book without reading it, but it is better than not reading anything. I get stuck in a book a lot of times, to know. If you are curious to learn you would, if you are not just go to the next. It is more of don’t be a perfectionist, than discarding books like Tik Tok’s. You only read a book because you are curious, most likely that’s why you read 12 rules for life. I do think that reading summaries of 1000 reviews and considering as reading 1000 books is silly.

A couple of years ago, I started listening to book summaries on RU-vid, skimming books, and only reading books in their entirety when I felt that was truly beneficial to me. This has been a game changer regarding how much I can absorb and apply. I still struggle with a feeling of guilt about needing to read every book from cover to cover in the traditional way. But I’m working to free myself from that guilt feeling.

The sad truth is you can't remember much without taking notes. All these fast readers don't retain much. Extremely few people can read once and remember mostly everything.

I'd say it depends :)) If it has been a good read, I usually retain the gist simply by relating it to what I already know (some non - fiction books explain in a much deeper way concepts that have just been mentioned in other books, this way connecting the dots becomes much easier)...but If the book I'm reading gets tougher I take notes (Well, I Take notes most of the times )

Really enjoy your videos Ali but you’re taking this a little to far. What’s the point of reading the book AFTER having already read all the important points in a summary? Same way you say you watch everything at 2-3x speed, feels like you can’t enjoy an activity, everything has to be productive. Not desirable to me

Woouvv, looking at comments, it is quite good to see the way people react to this video. We can also say that this is a great opportunity for Ali to get to know his community better. Because it looks like people's understanding of "reading a book" is quite different than Ali's. The way i see, there are people like Ali who wants to read almost every book that they feel interested (like truly, how many of us read the back cover of a 1000 different books?) and this method only works for them. But for the majority of people, reading a book is about having fun or getting an insight from that book, so it doesn't work.

Reading only 20 books in a year - reading them properly, and reflecting on them - would benefit one far more than your summarisation method. Perhaps with age you will come to realise how utterly silly this video and your obsession with ‘productivity’ and optimisation really is.

Ali did say after reading a summary that if it’s a book that resonates or sound interesting, that he would “read it properly”. A summary is the best way to know if a book is worth reading all the way through.

This is not about productivity. One should not have the obligation to finish every book he/she reads. We should read for fun and to get maximum value out of the content. If we find something actually interesting, I highly doubt we would leave it halfway. Our time is more precious than any book, so why waste it upon reading something uninteresting?

Great video Ali, wanted to offer my opinion on the foreground plant though (for what little it's worth as one man's opinion). Not necessary. You are not limited by this knowledge and the only thing "reading popular books" does is the ability to discuss them with someone.

I don’t agree. We all interpret books differently, just because you and I read the same books doesn’t mean we’ll have the same thoughts or feelings about these books. That’s why in literature classes, book clubs, etc, opinions always differ about the required reading. I’m not a fan of Haruki Murakami for instance, yet millions are. Evidently, what I got from the book is not what the millions who love him did.

Never could get into productized book summaries. They miss so much of the actual highlights of the books. Blinkist was notoriously bad for just putting up summaries just to expand the catalog.

This is such an awesome idea to implement in my reading. Unfortunately my situation doesn’t let me stop and skip a section nor write down notes or save sections to help me remember hopefully later i can revisit these books and have a better understanding.

🐈 reading books is something i'm still working on and still figuring out on how to make it a habit.. and i reread some books that i like.. ik we should seek continuous learning but learning is not limited to reading books.. i constantly learn through introspection and satisfying my curiosity about things, people and life itself 🤖 do what works for you

I totally agree that there’s a certain pressure to “finish” a book. I feel like I can’t just give up and move on, to the point I’ll stop reading all together rather than just move on and read something else. I need to stop doing that.

I feel there are some books that i want to 'go deep' on and i use the method i use for language learning, first listen on audio and dont worry about not digesting it all, then re-reading

Reading a book is very personal to each mind , different people take different connections from the same book. I’ve often tried to read the summarises of the book and found that it completely takes away the whole experience of reading it .

I don't mind having a page open for days on end and reading the same page, learning a new mindset or new use of words. I like reading books where i learn new words, or thoughts from great historical figures. Love the way words and letters have change the past 1000 years. Keep one page open on your desk that mean something to you from the book you read before, and read it every morning while you read a new book at night. And repeat.

Problem with audible is that you cannot export the important bits for spaced reviewing... (or can you somehow and I just don't know it?) The ability to listen to books VS losing the highlight feature makes me question how effective would it be long term.

I guess it's a preferential thing. Though I'm perfectly happy fully understanding and memorising around 10 good books a year (implementing tips from your Zettlekasten video and using Obsidian to do it), because I see it more as a hobby to satisfy my intellectual curiosity than something I need to squeeze the maximum amount of info in the shortest timeframe possible just because I've got an inkling of what it's about, otherwise it becomes more of a chore than something I enjoy doing. Fictional books infinitely moreso. It's an interesting take for those who want to review and get the gist of many books as possible if that's their thing, my intrinsic motivations simply do not support this method. Step 4 is pretty much how I operate by default whether I like the book or not. If it's a boring read, I simply power through it. My satisfaction comes from overcoming a hard, boring, yet maybe insightful read, It's kinda difficult to explain (I'm not eloquent in wording mental experiences). If the book is utter trash, then at least I've mastered it's contents, I gave it a fair chance, even if said info isn't all that useful or its something I already know, which happens to be the case a lot of the time! Its sort of paradoxical in a way, sounds like I'm contradicting myself, though I enjoy the challenge of a 'tough', 'putting the mind to sleep every page' kind of book having come out the other side. For me, it's not always about the potential quality of insight the book can provide for me. Does that make sense? It's not for everyone of course, I'm just weird like that. Love your work, but I respectfully disagree on this one for the most part. I think this sort of stuff is very personal and opinionated, definitely a mindset thing like you said. Saying that, you've definitely ruffled a few feathers down below in the comments, tis quite the fire you've stoked! 😁

Actually, I also do this: not finish the book till the end page. But it's because I turn easily to be distracted, due to many books that I want to read or other activities at the same time that I wanna do. However, how about the idea finish what has been started?
