I scratched my head many times trying to figure out how to get the latch and knob apart on this era of door hardware but after an hour of trying every possible thing I finally got it. I just had to pass it on, how to get the door hardware apart on these old doors. Most door knobs have a hidden catch or clasp and aren't too hard to find but this one took some time to figure out. Like anything, once you know how, it's easy. And this is quite easy once you see how it comes apart.

Thanks. Every door knob is different. Would be nice if someone defined each possibility in 1 video so I didn't try 4 approaches prior to this one in an attempt to get it off. But I am thankful I finally found this one. Have the same knobs on 5 doors, so I only damaged one door with 4 different methods prior to finding this video which is the correct method for my knob

This is one time that a RU-vid video _confirmed_ what I was pretty sure was true, but it still wasn't coming off. Thanks for giving me the confidence to continue! What's funny is our door handles look exactly like those with the 60+ years of gunk buildup on the handles. Even after deciding to replace them, I still felt the urge to clean the gunk off. My girlfriend had to remind me to "just let it go". LOL!

Designed for servicability . . . NOT !!! Thanks for the video . . . so far it enabled me to get the inside and outside knobs off a non-locking unit, but now I have to research why I can't get the decorative ring off of one side (it came loose earlier, but the know was in the way). Ah !! More judicious prying got that off, revealing the two screws under it. I really, really, really don't like the design of this unit. I think it is a Dexter installed around thirty-three years ago. No wonder they went out of business.

What do you call this type of door knob? Outside of its brand name, is there a specific type of door knob that it is? Does anybody make them today?

Good question. I don't know what they are called. If you're looking for parts, best would be to visit a bunch of antique stores to see if they have any. Good luck.
