It’s videos like this that make me truly appreciate RU-vid and Google. I didn’t know I had a Sargent knob, but it has to be one of the trickiest ones to remove. Thanks for explaining the mechanism!
Thank you so much for posting this! After spending hours trying in vain, poking around all the holes and crevices, it never occurred to me to depress the wires as you clearly demonstrated. Your video was direct and to the point. Great job.
OMG! THANK YOU! 20 years I put up with paint on the door knobs because no one knew how to take them off.!! Looked at all the rest of the how tos and they didn't work because these are different. The name has been painted over so I didn't know what brand. A 1000 thank yous.
Thanks so much! Have these all over our 1950's building. We were close, just didn't pull hard enough when depressing the spring. Appreciate your knowledge.
FINALLY! Thanks to this video I found that the doorknobs in my house use THIS system, and not the typical "push in the pin and slide the knob off" type. Couldn't have done it without you.
OMG!!! This video saved my sanity!! I already encountered one of these & knew there was some sort of detent that needed to be pressed but couldn't figure it out. So that know got cut, sawed, hammered, & chiseled out of that door. Now there's another door with that same kind of knob that I need to changed out & this video is an absolute life saver!! Thank you so much for making a very well explained, easy to follow, step by step tutorial! Cheers!!
Hi... After two hours of trying to figure out how to take the knob off, I watched your video and was able to get it off. I don't think my lock was sargent, there were no markings... really old door knob set.... but it did screw off. thanks again.
Thanks for this! I cut off the handle with an angle grinder to try to figure it out and still had no clue on the second one. Until I typed in the brand I was watching several videos that didn’t help. I’m not sure how one would figure this out on their own. I have 20 of these to replace and now I know the trick!
just remove the interior side knob. often there is a pin going through the lock into the latch, remove pin, then remove latch and the rest of the lock will fall
Thank you for this addendum! I was going nuts, trying to find the wire on the exterior side of the doorknob, and there was no way to get to it. You are a lifesaver!
Very helpful. And I realized that I *had* the special wrench in my dad's miscellaneous tool collection. So I could put them back on without having the finish damaged.
Almost exactly what I have. The only difference is there is a hole/wire on just the inside. I had to remove the deadlatch, then the outside knob slides right off. Thanks!
Mine Sargent lock had like 9 coats of paint on it. I finally got it loose enough to see the wire pin. I pushed and pulled and played with it for over an hour. Still no luck. So I pulled out the hacksaw, and sawed the darn thing off. It took a while, but I am replacing it anyway.
Thank you! Home has 1960s era locksets. I never would have figured this one out. A nail can be put in the holes in the plates to give a grip for loosening or tightening. Note for reinstall, will need to push in the wire again.
Rather than grabbing the collars with plumbing pliers (which gouges the finish), look for a little hole on each collar, insert a pin punch or an allen key, and rotate the collars to loosen them by pulling them around with the pin.
Mine was a different situation. I was locked outside the bathroom and the knob was a no-key knob (whatever that's called. It doesn't have a keyhole. So I guess it shouldn't be locked from the outside.) No matter what I do, I couldn't find a latch, or a screw, or whatever, and all the youtube tutorials couldn't help me. So I took a 10lbs dumbbell and smashed the knob with it, and it fell right off. Haha
I managed to get the outside of the room knob off but on the inside, the wire that you push in will not turn so that it is exposed in the opening!!! Now what?
This video go ahead and is useful for people who go ahead and have Sargeant doorknobs. I go ahead and am going to go ahead and guess that the uploader go ahead and is also a software tech. 😂
WOW! Thank you so very much! I was going crazy poking everything into that stupid little hole! I was able to screw off the plate, but cannot find the wire. When I turn, it's blank on both sides!! Argh.
I removed the door handles and whole locking mechanism but the last part of the lock is stuck in the door. There's no screws on the plate and I tried putting a screwdriver in the center holes and prying but no luck. There's a hole on the right side, a hole in the center, and half a hole towards the hinges. Wtf I can't find anything anywhere about this.
They make a tool to turn the rose.you don't use pliers because it marks up the door. Plus you never showed the pin that holds the latch to the housing. Amatures
