Hey dude thanks for being specific. I couldnt get the battery cover off on my es300 key and you mentioned that it needs an upwards thrust lol. I felt like I was going to break it but after your instructions it came off instantly. Battery replaced!

Mine did the same. I ended up fixing it with epoxy glue. This pretty much permanently sealed it shut preventing any future battery changes LOL.

What a smart way to replace car keys! I've always seen key shops that can make new car keys but heard it can be a quite a bit to reprogram the new key. Smart thinking with this and save a couple of bucks! Although it'll take two weeks max to deliver here in australia :( Stil amazed by your amazon 1 day delivery!

Neat, but couldn't you use the actual metal key part from the original? Or is that somehow attached where removing it would cause damage to the plastic?

Mine broke today 11/28/18, and I was pondering the same question after finding I could bypass the LEXU$$ cost. I will try it, y'all are probably past this issue by now, but if not I'll be happy to share any insights.

Also curious - our local hardware store sells programmed replacements for far cheaper than a dealership, but they couldn't grind the new key so it would turn. I'd order a new shell and fix my key, but I don't want to try to have it ground and be disappointed again. Right now glue and duct tape are my friends, but I'd love a better, more permanent fix.

Yes, you can use the original key part but requires some work on the plastic. Many have described this on Amazon where the replacement parts are sold. The replacement plastic shape does not match the metal key perfectly. I had to file away some plastic to get it to fit. Even then, when screwing the case halves together, the plastic cracked some adjacent where the key extends out. Next time I may try to use a dremo tool to cut the plastic material. If you want to avoid this, find a good locksmith and have him cut the key.

⁠@@tinytim9453yes , I’ve done it on mine . The tiny plastic piece over the key blade pops out take the blank key out put your original key in and pop the tiny plastic piece in place .

Hi Chris, Do you have any experience with the kit where you swap out your cut blade from old broken key? Also I learned that the 5 digit code to cut blade is on wallet valet key case.

My blade twisted out of my fob the first day i got my car lexues es300 2000 i was able to get it home but ever since then the car will not start now. Can a seperated blade from the fob make it where i cant start my car is that possible in a car this old ? Please help need feedback

As long as you can insert the blade and are able to turn it, and at the same time with the other part of the key that is broken off held up to it, (the part with the battery in it and the buttons on it)it should start like normal.

Hi Chris. I've done this but my car will not start. when I replaced the fob battery, it seems like the fob has been reprogrammed or something, but my car won't turn over. before I order the new case and replace the battery it did start even in separate pieces. do you think I need to reprogram the fob?

If this battery goes COMPLETELY dead, can you start your car?

Yes it will start under these conditions. If your fob is broken in 2 pieces, like in the thumbnail, as you somehow turn the ignition, you need to have the other half of the fob very close to the ignition switch so that it can read the chip in the fob. Even if there is no battery in the fob, it will still start, but you still need to bring it close to the ring around the ignition switch.

The metal blade is reusable. No need to pay to cut the key when you already have one.

Sorry I don't know the size. It does not say it in the box of bits. If you want one those kits, it's in the description. I find it very useful to have.

Hello there! Funny, I did the same thing, although I ordered a slightly different key shell. One question: the key you linked on Amazon didn't have the lexus badge on it on the pictures, but it did in your video. Did it actually come with the lexus sign?

I had mine recut by a locksmith. It opens the car door and works in the ignition, but it does not work on the glove box lock. Make sure you try all three before driving away!

hi I have a Lexus 2008 and the screw is seized in the hole. The dealer gave it to me stripped. Any ideas to remove the screw? No area to pry the key case open. It slides

A lock smith may be able to cut it open and save the inside part and possibly get the seized tiny screw out. Not much more you can do yourself.

What do I do if I dropped my key like you said but the internals of the shell got lost? I think my neighbors kids found it because my alarm was randomly going on and off when they were playing outside. Unfortunately me and my neighbor don’t get along so I’m worried about him unlocking my car. Is there anything I can do about that?

You have 2 options and I'm going on the assumption that the kids only have the guts and not the key Option 1 Call the dealer and get a quote on a new key including the guts + having it re-cut + re-programming it to the car. Then request that you want all other keys deleted. It costs no extra to do this. It's done during the programming process. They can then re-program the new one along with any other key to the car you may have and the piece the kids have becomes useless. Option 2 Once you have the $ amount to do all that, walk over to the kids and say "if you guys find the part to my key that I lost, I will give you $50 or whatever amount you decide. It will be way cheaper doing it that way if you want to get it back and still use the key.

They wanted to charge me over $200 to fix mine. My Lexus keys have broken 4 times! You'd think they could make a substantial key fob for their customers, considering the price of their car.

@@joanies6778 My lexus is 2007 so maybe that's why it's only 100. I agree Lexus pricey and is reliable but the CD player, paint on my car, trunk, and tire pressure sensor, all have failed on me. I have a 2002 BMW that maintained better lol.

@@shabchique7149 Mine is a 2004, and I am the original owner. I had moved to Portland, OR area and the first one broke after just a couple of years. They wanted to charge me over $200, so I just started using the other key until it broke a couple years later. So each only lasted a couple of years. I got a Lexus replacement fob from another seller and it broke, too. The only one that never broke was the one without all the buttons.

This was such a pain when I suck my key in the ignition and it literally fell apart in my hand. Took me hours to realise I couldn't start the car without the fob touching the metal because it had to be within a certain proximity to the ignition

That's correct. You need to hold it close to the ignition cylinder in order for it to start.

No. You need to have the new key re-cut. The new key comes fixed to the new shell.

I appreciate you trying but this video is zero help. "Just take your new key and your old key to the locksmith." And spend $65 for him to cut grooves in the key that you've already paid for and for which you have a perfectly good and working key shaft. We all know how to buy shells off ebay. What we all need to know is how to switch the key SHAFT into the new unit.

That can't be done. The savings are in getting it on amazon and not from the dealer. No programming needed only getting it cut. Just swap the innards. Shop around for the cheapest place to get it cut. Hope that helps. Thanks.

This may be way too late to help you. I got the key shaft out by using a 1/8" flathead screwdriver with an ~6" shaft as a lever at the top of the "T". It popped the plastic piece away with a few flicks. I anticipated him having the shaft solution in this video too.
