Got the same error, but solved it by using arcs instead (I see that that's one of the alternative solutions you give). Is there a particular reason not to use arcs in the first place? Thanks!

*IMPORTANT* Be sure to apply the sketch fillets ONE at a time. Applying them both as I did in the video resulted in inconsistent results due to Fusion 360's rendering engine. If you apply them ONE at a time that will avoid the "Anti Parallel" error. _ P.S. Product Design Online I added them one at a time which seemed to fix the “anti-parallel” error. However, now when I try to use the sweep function, my paper clip got broken up into segments, and it’s also not letting me manually drag the sweep across the path. I don’t know what i’m doing wrong.

For those who are struggling with the anti-parallel issue, this is what worked for me... draw out the paper clip dimensions and make sure all dimensions are locked. delete all existing constraints. add vertical constraints to all vertical lines. add fillets one by one. If it still refuses to work (for me it kept failing on the bottom curve) then you can take 0.1mm off each fillet. For the bottom curve for example, you would fillet each corner by 3.24
@chillyspoon
@chillyspoon 4 года назад
Thanks - adding the fillets one by one sorted me out - although I didn't need to remove the existing constraints because all of the vertical lines already had them.

Had several goes with varying problems. After reading all the comments from other users I finally got there. I used smaller fillets but also only applied one at a time. Not sure which change made the difference but the final result was spot on. In a way I'm glad there was a few problems along the way as it all adds to the learning. Having run into issues, with the start direction error, I found that If I take a dimension of the fillet and divide it by 2 (5.5/2 then hit enter), that solves the problem. To eliminate the issue of constraints, (if someone is having trouble with those), simply just use your line tool to sketch out a rough and then dimension the sketch after. You won't have to worry about angles and constraints as fusion understands that you're working in a 2d sketch. Thanks for the lessons. You've brought me further.

Little tip: If you add the 90 degree and tab for EVERY line on this sketch, you won't have to mess with any constraints because they will be automatically added.

If you get this error "ERROR: The start direction of the path segment is antiparallel to the end direction of the previous path segment", then read on for a possible solution that worked for me. Keep getting this error? Here is one way that I got past the error. After many attempts to fix I kept getting the same antiparallel error. I started over and this time I didn't force any dimensions with the key. I did not set any angles either. Everything worked as in the video. Maybe, once the dimensions are constrained the fillet operation shortens the constrained dimension and fails to follow the path needed when using the sweep operation. All I know is that it works now. My 2nd attempt, that worked, is using the Line tool and on the arcs, I held down the left mouse button and moved over the proper radius and an arc was created for me. I never had to leave the Line tool until the path was finished. Course, the paper clip is longer since the line dimensions are not changed like when I used the fillet.

Hi, Charles. Thanks for sharing this! I found, with the help of a few others, that applying the fillets one-by-one produces consistent results. I've found that the way I applied them (two at a time) in the tutorial does not produce significant results because of how F360 processes the calculation. I was unaware of this at the time of recording this, but I haven't seen anyone experience issues after applying the fillets one at a time. Cheers, Kevin :)

I worked around the incomplete sweep problem by zooming in real close to where the fillets meet at the apex of each arch, deleting the tiny segment in between them and then editing the arch segments so they connect. Three in all to fix. I tried to simply connect the arch and the tiny line segment but that didn't go well. Novice here so I'm sure there is a better way but it worked! Learning a lot because I make mistakes but don't move on until each day's model is complete. Thanks for the great playlist Kevin!

Ran into the antiparallel issue, had all the vertical constraints, swapped them for one vertical and three parallel, tried reducing the fillet by 0.02, double checked the location of the issue (on the third iteration of the sketch) by unchecking chain and slowly extending the path length which that time at least showed the problem was the lower right fillet. Restarted (fourth iteration) and this time did each fillet one at a time - not only did I have no issues with sketch parts moving around (even without additional constraints) but the sweep worked perfectly, albeit with needing to select the path as multiple parts. If I had to make a vaguely educated guess, 360 isn't evaluating the results consistently when you ask it to do the fillets two at a time, possibly because of equal-priority order of operations combining poorly when constraints are being removed/modified, and probably not helped by the fillets being so close to one another (hence reducing the size seems to have helped some). This would explain the seemingly random way it's affecting people - some are getting lucky and everything works, some of us get almost all the way there, some halfway there, and others run into trouble at the first curve. And results (positive or negative) aren't consistently reproduceable, because it's a toss up as to which instructions hit the processor for execution first.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 лет назад
Thanks for sharing this, Baiswith! Great observation with everything... I'll have to agree that it seems like both fillets being applied at once are the issue causing the inconsistent results. I'll be sure to let everyone else know that has problems. Cheers, Kevin :)

First of all, thank you for the simple and clear tutorials. Very easy to follow along!, although sometimes, due to the updated UI, it can get a bit tricky. Not sure if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you can also specify measurement of the fillets using the divide operation. (this is in case you have more precise dimensions and don't want to do the math) For example for the first pair of fillets, you can type 7.5/2 and the program calculates the 3.75 once you hit enter.

@@-Gruntled Hi Martin. The way Fusion 360's sweep command processes/understands the lines does not like the result produced by the double-fillet. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't, because it doesn't produce the same results each time - essentially it's a quirk in how the program reads the fillets converging at the midpoint.

Thanks!! Loving these tutorials. I still had problems with anti parallel even after applying constraints and filleting one at a time. I decided to remove the fillets and apply a tangent ark instead worked wonders. I think it might have something to do with how the fillets interact with each other at the end points as I could only sweep up until the ends of the paper clip before receiving the error. Then do a 3 point arc and click left side, then right side, then tangent/middle point on the top. To get rid of the excess lines, click trim, selecting the extra bit of line you want to get rid of. Hi, viswak. Did you add the vertical constraints to the vertical lines before trying the sweep? Those vertical constraints should ensure that they are both vertical/parallel with one another. In some scenarios, you could use the parallel constraint; however, in this case, that would overconstrain the sketch. Double check that you have vertical constraints. Addressing the antiparallel error that some people seem to be getting - this happens due to the connection points of the filleting to the other sketched lines. At these connection points, such as the intersection between filetts, if you zoom in close enough, you will notice the lines making miniscule zigzag or overlapping of lines. This creates the error. I fixed this by trimming the zigzagged portion(creating a gap) and using the coincident sketch tool to reconnect the lines for a smooth connection, rather than a zigzag or overlapped connection. You can look over the whole sketch for any of these discrepancies. When the discrepancies have been trimmed, you can sweep over the sketch section by section to complete the paperclip.
@robertdubard7959
@robertdubard7959 4 года назад
That works. It just doesn't reflect design intent. A better approach is to NOT use straight lines and not use sketch fillets! There is a way to make the line tool do tangent arcs. By using that, you get desirable constraints automatically, and you simply have to add a few points to dimension. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-lxK3LR4wd2g.html That said, Kevin's videos are generally excellent, and my production sucks. But maybe you will find the approach a bit simpler.

I solved all problems mentiones one by one but in the end the sweep stops at each 90 degree turn segment, had no idea why, so I had to click several times to complete the clip. Interestingly I do not have the black line on the 90 degree turn points as you (on the curved part of the clip). I think F360 has changed a lot since you did the videos. I have been struggling in the previous tutorials with the new operation of the toolbar and all the problems related. Its just a year since you released the videos but I think its time to redo the oldest to be on par with the current software characteristics. Thanks for the tutorials of course!

Hi, Mateyhv1. That is correct. When applying the fillets one at a time (to avoid the anti-parallel issue) you will need to select each part of the segments. The black lines you're referring to are simply a visual style setting. Head down to the bottom of Fusion 360 where you see the desktop monitor icon that is labeled "Display Settings." From there, hover over the visual style flyout and select "Shaded with Visual Edges Only". Yours is likely set to "Shaded".

Amazing videos. I had zero problems until this one. The fillet issue that all others had. Followed you step by step 3x before I started messing with my fillets. I had to reduce them to leave "clearance" (.05 was plenty for me; less would likely work too) at the intersection. I could work around this by getting rid of the perpendicular constraints before I tried my full fillets, but it would still freak out on the 3rd and final fillet no matter what. I tried using dimension lines to measure what was going on and my best clue was that the fillets could not meet perfectly - there seemed to be a "lost" .01mm somewhere for some reason... at least that's what I saw before F360 freaked out and told me I was overconstraining everything (clearly I have much to learn and am scared to break everything currently.

Hi, Joel. Thanks for letting me know. I'm glad you were able to get it to work by reducing the fillets by 0.05 as that seems to be the best "workaround" for now. I go further into constraints (applying them and why to apply them) later on in this series. Hopefully, after the series you'll have a much better understanding of constraints and this video will make more sense. Great video! I just spent and hour trying to get the sweep function to work appropriately I should have read the comment s first haha. I was not able to get the sweep function (SF) to work past the first bend in the paper clip. I ended up doing three sweep functions. The first SF rounds the top bend and stops at the halfway point in the second bend where i create another 1mm profile circle, the second SF picks up from where the first ends and goes to the halfway mark in the last bend where i placed another 1 mm profile circle, the third SF goes from the inner end of the paper clip to the half way point in the inner most curve to finish the paper clip off. This is definitely a brute force method of completing the project. I'm going to try it again but do as Kevin recommended and create each fillet one at a time and see if that will let me do one continuous sweep through the entire paper clip.

I couldn't get any of the ideas below to work. So, I drew the lines but instead of using the distance/2, I used something a tiny bit shorter for all 3 fillet area; 3.7, 3.2, 2.7. This put a tiny line in between the fillets. I didn't mess with any of the constraints and the sweep worked perfectly.

Hi Kevin, Your videos are great, thank you. I ran into an error on the SWEEP command: "Error: The start direction of a path segment is antiparallel to the end direction of the previous path segment." I probably I missed a step (or the most recent Fusion 360 is a bit different). I was able to avoid the constraint issue and get the fillets to work by following the advice on the pinned comment to go one-by-one. But to fix the SWEEP issue, I created the ARCs using the CENTER-POINT-ARC command instead to create the curved parts of the paper clip. This had the added advantage that I ended up with a fully constrained SKETCH. To do this, I used construction lines to create the initial rectangular frame of the paperclip. I then created construction lines (down or up, as the case may be) from the horizontal parts using the dimensions of fillets (3.75,3.25, and 2.75). From these points I then created a horizontal line across the paperclip at these points. This gave me a mid-point of a line to use as the center point of the CENTER-POINT-ARC. This avoids the constraint issues and the error I got above. Here is a link to my version: a360.co/37I1p98.

Thank you Kevin for these excellent tutorías. One thing about the updated Fusion 360 regarding the fillets is a function called junction (or link , I really dont know exactly since my Fusion is in Spanish) that requires once active to select the first corner, then write the measure and when the next corner is clicked on it automatically applies the change.

@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi Luke. That error is usually caused by the sketch fillets throwing the lines out of whack. Try reverting the sketch and apply the corner sketch fillets one at a time. You may then have to drag the sweep command around the profile, as it doesn't always connect all of the lines with fillets on each corner. This should fix it - let me know if it doesn't. Cheers, Kevin :)

@@ProductDesignOnline I had exactly the same issue, even with vertical constraints I got the anti-parallel issue. I then applied the fillets 1-by-1 and it worked. Annoyingly it would not sweep the whole path in a single go and I had to select each segment, but otherwise it worked. It's probably a versioning issue that causes the problem to only occur for some people - newer versions of Fusion 360 probably perform the calculations differently such that the truncation error from using floating point arithmetic results in the arcs crossing, causing it to go out of whack. Doing each fillet one at a time clearly changes the calculation preventing this from occuring (e.g. F360 probably works out it it needs to reduce the fillet radius by epsilon).

For some reason adding the radius on each bend would cause the radii to not intersect. I found that keeping the lines parallel and then using 3 point tangent for circles worked better.

@e30mark
@e30mark 4 года назад
@@jimjh2671 I believe the warning you're getting is because when you add the fillet, the bottom horizontal line is deleted, and replaced by the fillet, the horizontal constraint is therefore removed when the line goes.

I had the antiparallel sweep thing as well, tried to go one at a time with the fillets. I finally deleted the following side of each fillet pair (the side that would be second in the sequence for each end) and used the edit and extend for the arc. Had to redraw one line as well after doing this just to confirm the connections.

Thanks for the quick reply on the last one, I got a weird hiccup when filleting still, had to do the fillets separately and .01 less than their opposite. I got antiparallel error, and told me that the constraint to keep the line vertical was disabled when I enacted to fillet, but still showed it active. But when I went to sweep it basically told me that some of the path wasn't meeting up correctly for the sweep to follow.

Hi, Am just starting out on the 3d down the rabbit hole journey and have chosen your tutorials as my route in. All the issues I've had so far have been of my own making but am having difficulty with what appears to be the relatively simple Paperclip (day 3 Revised). Didn't have a constraint issue, despite not having the same Sketch pallette options that came up in your demo... I have "show constraints" but no options list of type of constraints..... still I found that with your Shortcuts/search option , as I also had to use it to find the "line fillet" option as that didn't appear in the same place as yours either! Anyway got to the last bit with my drawing looking exactly as yours did (apparently) filled in all the sweep dialogue boxes as prescribed and hit the path button only to be presented with an error message saying..." The start direction of a path is antiparallel to the end directionof the previous path segment" Help... what have I done this time?

Ran into more or less the same problem as everyone. Managed to fix it by individually filleting each edge, if it gave problems doing both. Before finishing the sketch I erased ALL constraints and then placed them new on All the vertical lines. After this the sweep command stopped giving me the error and the preview of the paperclip could be seen before hitting the ok button and finishing the sweep.

Great! One problem for me, i created the line segments a few lines at a time and when creating the sweep i have to select multiple segments of lines for the path. I think it happened when i used the fillet command separately for each corner. I've googled a ton and cant figure out how to join the segments... the points are definitely coinciding ... tried all type of constraints but nothing works. Of course the sweet works if i select multiple segments, but its annoying i cant figure this out. Help?

Exactly the same issue i had. I drew the sketch and before applying the fillets i tried to sweep a profile around the path, it worked fine. Soon as you fillet the corners the path is segmented and has to be selected in several parts to define it as the path. I should of gone back and tried smaller fillets and seen what effect that had on the path.
