Great stuff, Kevin. For some reason my XY plane is flat so I picked XZ. No biggie. Still worked out great. Really loved the extra tip there towards the end by going back into our Timeline and change/modify our line and have it update the model instantly. Cheers!

Hi, Kaj Olsen! Glad you're enjoying the little tricks and tips I put in each lesson. When I recorded this lesson the "Y" axis was the default "up" orientation. Since then, the engineers have changed the default orientation to be the "Z" axis up - which better aligns with use of CNC and 3D printers. That doesn't effect anything other than the outcome. As you realized, you'll simply have to select the opposite plane. Cheers, Kevin :)

Was pulling my hair out over this as I couldn't get the line tool to snap to the edge of the nut in order to draw the triangle shape as he does at 2:23, after googling I realised you need to hit P on the keyboard after you have selected the plane to draw on, to project geometries then click on the face you want to project and then it will allow the line tool to snap. I am using the latest version of Fusion 360 so I assume this must be something that was automatic in the previous version but no longer is. Hope this helps people not to get frustrated with it as I have been just now!!

I've been going through the Learn Fusion in 30 Days and I've really enjoyed the series so far! I think the biggest hang ups I've had so far have been on lofting the Whiskey Bottle and the Paper Clip tutorial. While I've been able to successfully complete them both, it seemed like a lot of trial and error to get the sweep correct and the lofting with guide rails to work. It could just be my unfamiliarity with the application, but does it seem as if the latest version of Fusion 360 is buggy compared to what previous versions you've used? Anyways, I look forward to getting all caught up! The UI layout is much appreciated and tools are categorized in sensible manner. Thanks for putting these tutorials together!
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi, Andrew. Glad to hear you're enjoying the series so far! I wouldn't say that Fusion 360 has gotten any more buggy. I do think the loft with rails (Whiskey bottle) can be challenging to new users, as it's one of those core concepts that has many small things that can cause an error. It's great to hear that you worked through it. Don't worry, those will become easier the more you get used to Fusion 360's quirks. Don't hesitate to comment if you run into any roadblocks as you work through the remainder of the series! Cheers, Kevin :)

That was fun. I also modelled a 1/2-13 UNC nut & 3d printed it. Looked pretty good but was pretty tight on a bolt until I chased it with a thread tap. Any tips on getting enough clearance when printing?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi Steve. That is a great question. There are a few different techniques (of which I'll have to make a video on at some point). The simplest method is to simply scale the model by a factor of .01 in your slicing software (or Fusion 360). You can also offset faces with the press pull command and there are a few other small tricks that can be done; however, they don't always work with every model. Cheers, Kevin :)

ii'm very much someone who like to learn just by doing when it comes to certain things. so ive basically just learn fusion without any tutorials by trial and error, in an attempt to model my entire house and most of the objects in it. but i have started to watch this series so see if i could find any new information out. while i always end up not really learning anything new features wise in these early videos at least (im sure ill learn newer things later) i have still learned a few smaller quality of life things, and how to be more efficient with all of the options in the program. i just discovered the construction planes tool the other day by myself but havent used it. to see you use is incredibly helpful knowledge to have. i like learning alone by brute forcing tasks but after a while, its nice to see how someone with more knowledge and skill does something so i can refine my own usage of the program. these have been very helpful in doing that, from this video using the rotation option like that, never even considered it. but it just make complete sense, i would have done that in the most convoluted way if i did it myself lol. thank you for the tutorials. they are a huge help to everyone who wants to learn the program, or refine their use of it!

Hi Brady. Glad to hear you're learning a lot! While in the solid tab you'll find a "chamfer" in the modify drop-down list. The Chamfer tool is pretty straightforward. You'll need to select the edge and define the distance.

Thank you for your tutorials. I find them most helpful and presented extremely well. One thing I am running into is that the program does not automatically go to the correct view when picking a plane or issuing a command. It does not seem to function as yours does. Most times I need to pick the view from the cube to match what view you have on the screen. Is there a setting that I need to edit and/or adjust? Much thanks for your time.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi Joe. There are two settings that are likely to cause this. First, when you activate a sketch tool, make sure the "3D Sketch" option is turned off in the Sketch Palette. That alone may take care of it. If not, you'll need to go to your username/profile image > Preferences > Design > "Auto look at Sketch"

I had the hardest time getting the chamfer cut. The line that I placed to use the revolve command kept wanting to snap to the nearest grid line rather than to the nut. So I kept leaving little portions of the nut after the revolve command. I finally had to make the line slightly outside the profile of the nut to get the chamfer to appear as yours did.

Hi Kevin, thanks a lot for your tutorials, they are very informative and useful! When I try editing the chamfer triangle sketch I seem to be able to just edit one of the two sides at a time: If I click on the other dimension while still editing the sketch it adds "d4" at the end of the "1.5 mm" text of the first dimension. Any idea why?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 3 года назад
Hi Mario. When you select another dimensions (with a different input active) it will reference that dimension's number. So by entering "d4" it will always apply the same dimension of the dimension you selected (in this case, the d4). Once placing your sketch geometry, you'll have to individually double-click on a dimension value to re-open its input field to edit it.

Near the end, where you change the dimensions of the chamfer, you slide the timeline marker back to the sketch. Why didn't you just right click the sketch and select Edit Sketch? Great video, btw...
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 6 лет назад
Hi Chuck - Great question! Really big files can take forever to load if you go to edit something in the timeline without dragging the slider back. When you slide the timeline back it essentially "freezes" all the other features making it load faster / less likely for Fusion 360 to crash. With that said, it was unnecessary for this file as it's not very large... just a habit :) Cheers, Kevin

Absolutely loving the series. Thank you. Coffee has been bought. One problem I'm coming to in this specific tutorial happens when I go to edit the triangle sketch it somehow moves the hole off center creating a Pacman shape. I'm thinking this has something to do with my hex shape not being "constrained" but I followed the directions to a t several times. I'm going to redo the lesson again looking out for mistakes I made. Either way thanks again for these great vids.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 лет назад
Hi, Caleb. First off, thanks for the support! I really appreciate you buying me a coffee! At 2:23 if you clicked on the corner, where it snaps into place, that should help ensure that your triangle stays at the corner by automatically adding a "coincident" constraint. Let's first check to see if it did or not. Click on that corner point and a coincident constraint should appear. If not, that means you should be able to drag the triangle around freely. If that is the case, hold down the shift key on your keyboard. Select the corner of the triangle, then select the corner of the hex nut. Then, select the "coincident" constraint option in the sketch palette. If that still doesn't solve it then please share your file and I'm more than happy to take a look at it. Cheers, Kevin :)

Pretty well done to the point tutorial so thanks for that. I wanted to create a hex stock for a project I'm working on so the majority of this what I needed. But I ran into an issue that was odd. When I imported my file to cura it came out massive. The original model I was doing was .5''x 6'' with a .25'' center hole. When I went to print it the size was 1x1.15x6'' not sure what happened!

Sounds like you mixed imperial and metric dimensions between fusion 360 and cura.. I haven't used Cura, but I know when importing into Prusa I have to select whether the source file is imperial or metric, and if I choose the wrong one, the size gets converted. So check both your Fusion model and settings in cura

Great tutorials, thank you! It's a little strange to countersink only one side of a hole, right? Why wouldn't you countersink both sides (top & bottom), and how do we model that?
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 5 лет назад
Thanks, Jonah! I'm happy to hear you are enjoying my tutorials. I actually modeled this hex nut off of one I had in my spare parts bin. I would assume the only reason it was only countersunk on one side was to manufacture it as cheap as possible. With that said, you are correct - most of them are countersunk on both sides. At the time of writing this, Fusion 360 does not offer a way to do a second countersunk within the hole command. What you would have to do is use the chamfer command on the other side of the hole, by selecting the edge of the hole as the edge to chamfer. Cheers, Kevin :)

I’ve done all of your tutorials up to this one with no problem and they have been great. I am using the latest version of 360 so I’ve had to pause a lot to find various commands. This one however isn’t flowing right for me. I choose the top plane to draw the hex and then extrude, when it’s time to draw the triangle on the X,Y plane that’s the top again, I have to choose the X,Z for it to rotate to the front. Not sure what’s happening.

How would I create the counter sink for bottom of the nut? (create a simple hole, chamfer top and bottom, then create a thread?)
@tonygomez1572
@tonygomez1572 4 года назад
In this tutorial, I need to point out the differences I encountered following the examples you demonstrated using your version of Fusion 360, to the current version of Fusion 360 that I recently acquired. While making the chamfer on the hex nut, you selected the XY plane from the browser and then selected Create Sketch from the right-click menu. The hex nut image immediately turned to face the front of the model. When I select the XY plane in my version of Fusion 360 and selected Create Sketch using a similar manner, the image turned to face the button of the model. If I were to turn the model manually to face the front and create the same sketch, the resulting geometry was undesirable. To produce a similar chamfer as in the tutorial, I had to select the XZ plane and select the Z-axis. Let me first say that I'm following your tutorials since you present the information in a clear and concise manner, and in a way that I can get up to speed in a shorter amount of time than it took me to get to the same level of knowledge while learning Solidworks. I'm not questioning your methods rather than pointing out the difference in how the two versions of Fusion 360 are behaving.
@ProductDesignOnline
@ProductDesignOnline 4 года назад
Hi, Tony. Glad to see that you caught the difference in Axis orientation. This is because I record the tutorials with the Fusion 360 default settings. However, from time-to-time the Engineers do decide to change them (sometimes with good intentions, others not so much). When I recorded this tutorial the default orientation was the "Y" axis being set to the up orientation. As you noted, you'll just need to select the opposite plane, per the new default of the "Z" axis being the up orientation. Don't hesitate to comment if you run into anything else that's different... don't waste too much time trying to figure it out :)

I would love if you could help me with three small qusetions: 1. when placing a hole and cliking the origin, it places the hole perpendiclar to the Z axis (and not the face of the nut), so the hole is going "sideways". What's up with that?! 2. (Somewhat unrelated) When starting a new sketch, the camera used to align to face the plane head-on. it stopped doing that. how can I bring it back? 3. How can I support you?! Keep being awesome!

Hi, Raz. First, glad to hear you're safe and making the most of your extra time at home :) 1. This tutorial was recorded when the "Y" axis used to be set to the up orientation. You can change that and check your settings with mine, here - bit.ly/defaultsettings 2. That is likely due to the recent update which changed 3D sketching. You'll want to make sure "3D Sketch" is turned off in the Sketch Palette. More on that here - bit.ly/lookAtSketch 3. And yes I did set it to cut (and even tried all the other options) actually I've been struggling this whole tutorial. For instance it wouldn't let me draw the lines for the triangle the way you did. However, sometimes I get a clean cut, other times I don't. It seems to help if I create a new file several times before I start (by pressing the plus sign.) Any ideas? Hi Kevin, really enjoying the lessons for far. This lesson i hit the first speed bump... Like a few others in the comments, i really struggled to sketch the triangle onto the corner of the polygon, causing unpredictable results with the revolve. In the end (based on one of your replies below), i drew the triangle in free space then selected its corner and made it coincident with the corner of the solid. It was kind of annoying though since i just couldn't seem to snap the line into place as i drew it, and didn't really understand why. There didn't seem to be a lot of grid or snap options open to me, and none of them helped. Are there more in depth snap settings somewhere in the program that i could tweak?

I couldn't snap to the origin when placing a hole (and I did change the default setting to auto project edges for reference, maybe it doesn't do points?). Anyway I just sketched two construction lines across vertices on the surface to get the midpoint that way. Still, Fusion360 fails to allow you to click reference points somewhat often, and I don't know why.
