Talking through an overhead break at 450 knots in the F-16. Have fun out there! #dcs
PS a “by the book” overhead pattern is flown at 300 knots on initial. However I think it is not unusual for pilots to have a little fun with these and fly faster when the situation permits.

Hey Gaffer, just wanted to say that the guys in my Viper squadron and I discovered your channel recently and we all think it's great -- good info, no obnoxious fluff, just the right amount of demonstration. Great intros/howtos for the new guys, and good refreshers with new tidbits for the more experienced guys. I think you're unanimously our new favorite channel for Viper how-to stuff. Keep up the great work!

I'd love to see a video on how you setup your countermeasures or how you've found the quickest way to align Mavericks with the TGP.

Bro your channel is amazing honestly, straight to the point no bs. You have a lot of potential to become a great resource for the community.

One comment you made as an aside that was really helpful is using the AOA bracket to determine your flare (pulling until FPM was in the middle). I found that really useful and that helped not only my flare but to determine my nose-up for aero-braking. So much easier than looking for 13degree on the HUD while allowing my eyes to keep scanning down the runway to stay on centreline.

Interesting. We always fly the OHB at 360 kts / 1500 ft, very similar to the way you flew it your first post. Incidentally we use 360 rather than 350 simply because it is divisible by 60 and gives us 6 nm per minute…
@johncrielaard465
@johncrielaard465 Год назад
You should be at 350, because at 1500ft (MSL) your TAS is 360kt, which in turn gives you 6nm/min. At 360 your TAS is little over 370 and gives you 6.15nm/minute. :)

FYI On downwind your wingtip should be on the runway. That's why you start an overhead break at 300 kts. If you go faster your turn will be too wide

Nice landing! We fly the Nellis pattern at 3500 MSL at 300 knots. Just curious, what was your fuel and Stores weight estimate for the overhead?

While the military can do what they want, they usually abide by the 250 knot speed limit unless necessary

Yes.. a good final landing of an F-16 vid if.. seen in a time.... OHB: usually not exceeds above 350... (unnecessary waste of fuel, more speed more drag..!) more waste of energy. But playing with this, always fun..😚

What the benefit of a overhead break? Is it just to allow a quicker approach rather then a drawn out direct in decent?
@galumir
@galumir 2 года назад
It allows a full flight to go in for a landing one after the other with minimal separation, where the individual pilots would turn into the overhead break with a few seconds in between, while flying towards the runway in a close formation.

Plus it pretty badass

There are many benefits, quicker approach, allows lots of pilots to slot in as Ryuk said, also it allows you to do an entire landing sequence over the airfield, which means you can be under the envelope of any airfield defence systems like SAM/SHORAD, instead of sitting 15 miles out going 180 knots like a sitting duck where you can be picked off in a combat zone. With an overhead break you are spending much less time at "landing speed" and you are much closer to the airfield at those speeds, if done correctly. It's also just nice to have "one way" that you do things in aircraft in general, makes you much better and more proficient at it, so getting used to the pattern and doing it often is really beneficial.

@@taerdryn 100% your second point but that's also what makes it so hard for me. So much to do in such a short time. Or all at once haha. Long finals are so much easier to get configured and setup properly.

Bro, don't you know that an overhead break should be at least 850 knots down the length of the runway?
