How To Actually Get a Job in the Music Industry

I have had a recording studio for 45 years, and I learned all my skills from recording bands and artists, and I made money by first being the best I can be and second by finding bands that needed a great demo or record track recorded. A big professional recording studio setup is now a dinosaur, with laptops, digital recording software and the record anywhere-you-want approach, the high-end large professional recording studios are going to be quite rare and obsolete and unless your studio is in a Music Industry Center (New York, Nashville, LA or London) business is going to become quite difficult to be able to create a full-time job/studio. At this point consider a recording studio as a hobby and have fun working with bands willing to let you record them. As far as attending a formal school that specializes in Recording Studio Techniques, if the class sizes are in the 50+ people range, it means that you will be competing with 49 people to get a job in recording or building a studio to do recording, the success rate is going to be quite low. Consider recording bands a cool hobby and have fun, because you won't be making much money doing it. Also consider the cost of recording equipment to be quite high, $1000 for a decent condenser microphone as an example. Good Luck!

Very well said. Two statements stand out for me, First, anyone can get a degree, and it's who you know. Music is a hobby for me, for now, my main job is Maintenance Management, and I hire my teams only through referrals, rarely through a Resume. Also, I like to look for technicians that have good solid practical experience, education is necessary, but you don't need seven titles after your name. Your method of letting someone come in with a band and help with the mix, then you decide if they have something to offer, is a perfect way to find the right people. It's also fair for the candidate because they will have a chance to see what is required for the job. Win-win for everyone.

It's so cheap to record now, even if you wanna learn tape you could get a machine for way less than any degree. Best thing to do is buy a busted down tape deck and mixer, fix them and learn them inside and out, then use the crap out of them. Then you'll be a great engineer.
