How To Add a Microphone To Your DJI Smart Controller 

THANK YOU! I recently got the DJI Smart Control which I love, but the audio was HORRIBLE. I use my drone in my line of work and some of my videos have gone viral, real shame that the last one had bad audio quality since it was my first time using the new control and I didn't know it would have that issue. I did my research and found nothing until I found this video. Such a small price compared to the cost of a drone and control, I am so happy I found your video. I got a lapel mic on Amazon with an adapter and did some tests, definitely a world of difference for the better. Thank you again!

Audio quality is so important. Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have both been quoted on the subject. Spielberg said 'Sound is half the picture' and Lucas mad a similar comment 'Sound is half the experience in seeing a film'. Spielberg has also said that an audience will forgive poor image quality but never bad audio. You made a convincing demonstration on how effective close mic'd audio is, and I appreciate the work you put into making it easy for Smart Controller users to get decent sound quality. I'll just add that when I come across a RU-vid channel where the presenter uses onboard audio from a camera six foot away from him, and makes things worse by using an ultra live room with lots of hard reflective surfaces, I ALWAYS stop the video and go look for someone who takes sound seriously.

Like yo take on all of yo vids. Yo a straight talker and get to the point in each of the presentations that you deliver.. Interesting tech features explained without too much jargon and to the relevent points for and against a particular drone. This is what I'm looking for when and if I decide to buy a product based on true facts that have been analysed and stripped down to + and - points which are relevent to what the buyer wants in a considered purchase.

Purchased a smart controller and was surfing youtube and 'Drone Valley" because that's where I go to get info I can trust. Just ORDERED Mic Adapter! TRHSN Class of 74 over and out!

Wow great video thanks so much , so just to take this a bit further I want to put a radio mic on a bike rider can I connect the mic receiver to the smart controller the same way . I’m using the DJI Mini 3 pro I’m assume the inputs will be the same as the smart controller. Thanks in advance . Rob

I use my dji with smart controller to hover over off road recoveries . Many times the wrecks are so far off the road the only way to see what is happening is from my smart controller . I have my hands full running the winches . Is there a wireless microphone that can be used to get audio along with my vid . The current sound fades in and out . I set the smart controller on wrecker next to winch levers . I think the wires would get in my way as I work . Thanks for any input . Hill Auto Body & Towing

Thank you for finding a solution for adding a microphone to the smart controller, I have the Mavic Pro 2 with the smart controller I also use the smart controller with my Enterprize, I will have to see how it works with the Enterprise and the speaker 👍

By the way, I got the new GoPro 360 max and found it also doesn't have a mic input which sucks when you have the camera on a helmet mount. I used your dongle in the USB C port and what do you know, it works too!! I don't see any other cheap alternatives to get a mic on the new GoPro max, would be nice if you did a video about it to let people know this works.

Wow that's a big difference in sound quality. I just bought the mavic air 2. Will this work with the controller that comes with that drone? It has a type c port at the bottom of the controller to charge it.

Hi Rick I just watched this video where you tested an external mic with the DJI Smart Controller and I was hoping that you’ve had some experience with using a mic with the RC Controller for the DJI Mini 3 Pro. I'm having a noise interference issue. Any thoughts that you have would be much appreciated. I sent you an email with a screen recording of the issue and info on the mic I’m using. I have had my DJI Mavic 2 Zoom for just over a year. I remember narrating the flights I flew and things went good for about 3-4 flights and something got changed. I am using the original controller with an Apple iPad-4. I have the software set to NOT erase the cache. I have the cache set to 4gig's. After each flight I will land and go into my iPad Mini-4 and check for video the flight has or supposed to capture. There is NONE. I can download the pictures and video from the drone to my iPad Mini-4 OK but there is no audio from the drone. I cannot remember what has changed so video and narration is kept on my iPad after each flight. I don't know if there was an update from DJI that changed it or a setting I made in the DJI Go-4 app that has changed. I really just want to narrate the flights but so far nothing. Anyone has a suggestion.

(Friday, May 6, 2022) Please see my previous post on this subject. Yesterday, I received instructions from Rick as follows: "To record audio on the Smart Controller you'll need to make sure you have both "video caching" and "audio caching" enabled in the settings." Although this sounded like there were two separate settings to look for, I found only one setting. In the settings menu pages, I found it under the heading, "Device". The under "Device", the sub-heading was titled "Sound". Under "Sound", at the very bottom of the page, there is a single toggle titled "Screen Recording with Audio". I toggled it to the "On" state. I spent the day making a few test flights. I was disappointed. Here's the audio setup: I used one of my trusty lavalier mics (checked it and I know it works) and I used the new Drone Valley 'Smart Controller Audio Kit' for recording my voice. The 'Audio Kit' has a male USB-C connector which plugs into the one DJI Smart Controller's USB-C receptacle. I plugged in my lavaliere mic's TRS plug into the receptacle on the body of the 'Audio Kit'. During my flights, I tried in vain to get a sound track recorded on the SD card of the Smart Controller. The info I received yesterday was "... you'll have to use the audio from the Smart Controller and the video from the drone for your clips." After each flight, I grabbed the .MP4 video file from the DJI Air 2S micro-SD card. I took it to my video editor on my computer. I assumed the video file would include a sound track. It did not. Trying a second lavaliere mic did not solve the problem. I assume the 'Smart Controller Audio Kit' was tested by the engineers before is was shipped. Is there any specific, detailed help out there? I've run out of ideas!!

Correct me if I'm wrong. The DJI GO4 app does not work on the DJI Mavic Air 2s. And it cannot be successfully installed. Many articles are out there about this. DJI Mavic Air 2s is my drone. The DJI GO4 app does have two separate settings for video and audio capture: "Cache During Video Shooting" and "Record Audio with Video Cache. Is there a mistaken assumption related to the Drone Valley Audio Kit, or is it the software that currently runs on the DJI Mavic Air 2s?

What about something for those who use an iPad with their DJI controller.

Did you try a USB headset? A wireless might be a little better, the headset has it own batteries for the ear pieces and mic.

(Thursday, May 5, 2022) I have the new DJI smart controller that has its own screen. I've never tried the older model of smart controller that requires a phone attached as the controller screen. This new controller doesn't use any kind of smart phone. Other folks on this forum are referring to their "phones" as part of the solution. I purchased the Drone Valley audio adapter kit. I plugged a lavaliere mic with a TRS connector into it. I connected the USB-C plug into the port on my (newer) DJI smart controller. I chose not to use the audio-out receptacle of the Drone Valley audio adapter kit to monitor my voice, as it was not required. I switched on the 'record screen' function of the smart controller and talked my way through a 10 minute flight which the drone was also recording. After landing, I removed the SD card from my DJI Mavic Air 2S and removed the SD card from this new DJI smart controller. There was no sound track on either of those SD cards. What am I doing wrong? Or should I be on another forum discussing just the newer DJI smart controller?

Why not use a Bluetooth wireless headset. My Bose SoundSport links without issue and being Bluetooth, there’s no dongles or wires to mess with in the field. This solution works for the iOS users as well.

You should really sell the microphone that works with it , i bought one on ebay and it doesn't work with it because it has 3 plastic rings which means it has 4 metal contacts, paid 5 bucks for mic and adapter costs 9 bucks , lol

HOT NOTE: Using the adapter will block the smart controller speaker so you won't hear information from the smart controller. You can use headphones to hear the sound. Rick told me he verified this and is looking for a solution. Here's the software solution.
