How to Add a Milk Crate to a Bicycle (Removable)

In this video I demonstrate a handy method for mounting a milk crate onto a bike in such a way that it's easy to quickly install and remove. In the past I've shown other methods for installing milk crates which include using zip ties and using string, but neither of those techniques made the milk crate easy to take on and off.
Installing a milk crate with string: • How to Add a Milk Crat...
Installing a milk crate with zip-ties: • How to Install a Milk ...
I hope you enjoyed this video. Please COMMENT and subscribe!
Thanks for watching.

The cutting board stabilization was the missing link to make milkcrates truly functional as a reliable carrier, and still portable for ease of removal from/replacement back onto the rack. Great video. Much better than higher production value videos, and you respected my time by being succinct. Thanks you for taking the time to do this, and I hope it garners many many views.

Amazingly easy! Worked like a charm! All the other crate attaching videos have all this fancy hardware that I wouldn't know where to find. U-da-man!!!!! Easy on and off too! Thank you so much for the details. They took a lot of the anxiety out of the process. So well explained! All I did was follow each step. My rack required a single longer, thinner boot, but the principle was exactly the same. I use a collapsing "Big Ant" crate, and that also has some advantages. The setup is now plenty strong, removable, and nothing shifts around at all. Wow!

I like your attachment method using the cutting board. I have done something similar however rather than drill the holes, I heat up a nail / drill bit of the right size with a small propane torch and it will make a very clean hole and will not stress the plastic or let it crack especially if you were using acrylic or some other brittle plastic for another application. Anyway 👍👍 up for the MC application.

cjhoyle I just found another video that I would like to send to you. It doesn’t come with English annotation and has a time lapsed short film but it shows a guy in France who is a designer take two L-shaped metal rails and connected them like sliders to The bottom of the milk crate so it would slide onto the rear rack. Then in order to secure the rack going forward and back he had a very cool strap system. This allowed him to take the entire milk crate off very quickly and yet it looks super secure when he put it back on. You’re so good at teaching that I wonder if you would be willing to take a look at this and give us your thoughts on it. I’m a total newbie when it comes to any of these tools so I’m looking for something I might actually be able to implement.

Nice! I just use a few reusable zip ties to adhere the mild crate on and leave them sticking up. Then just loosen them when I need to remove it. Super easy. The downside with this technique is if I the mild crate catches onto something like a doorway (unfortunately not that uncommon) or drop it the zip can ties shear off.... which is fine I just carry a few extra zip ties. Nice video!!!!
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 7 месяцев назад
Neat idea! It's important to me that my milk crates are very rigidly fastened to the rack, so when I use zip ties for this, I use a lot of them. While using reusable zip ties would theoretically make the milk crate removeable, it would be pretty time consuming to take it on and off, since I'd have roughly 16 zipties to install/remove each time. But if you only need to remove it once or twice a year, it's a great alternate solution!

Chunks of plywood also worked if you put them close together. They squeeze around the rack tubes and secure a pretty legit fit along with the help of bungees or ratchet straps. Have yet to do it with a milk crate, but it did work out with a large sound system I once had attached to a cargo rack on the back of Rans V-Rex I used to own. Then I switched to a Catrike Expedition and mounted the sound to a Bob Yak.
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 4 года назад
The primary reason I selected plastic rather than wood for the shoes was for water resistance. For a sound system though, I'm sure you wouldn't be intending for it to get wet!

Excellent tutorial!! Just followed it myself and it worked perfectly :) The only thing I did differently is that I used plywood instead of plastic and hammered U-shaped nails through the milk crate into the boards instead of using zip-ties. I found this method to be better as I didn't have to drill a bunch of holes and more importantly so I wouldn't have zip ties sticking out the bottom when I want to place my crate on a surface. The only thing I've yet to see is if it's as durable as your method but I'll have to wait a while to decide. Anyways, thanks again for the fantastic solution!
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle Год назад
Nice! I tend to avoid using wood products for bike accessories since I ride in all weather conditions and properly waterproofing the wood takes a whole lot of extra work. With your design, I'd also be a bit concerned about the u-shaped nails getting pulled out while carrying a heavy load. But it's definitely good to experiment with different techniques and materials.
@nartb
@nartb Год назад
@@cjhoyle Those are good points! I've been riding it in Vancouver, Canada which is a pretty rainy place and haven't had any issues so far although it'll probably rot eventually. For the rack with the flat plate, cut a piece of plywood (1/4", 3/8", whichever) to fit within the length of the flat part of the rack, and as wide (or slightly wider if desired) as the outside edges of the rack; set the plywood on the rack and trace the slots on it from the underside; cut and attach (glue & screw) pieces of 1" x however wide to the plywood to fit within the traced areas; attach the completed plywood assembly to the crate with zip ties same as what you did in the video - :-)

Seems like a good idea but I wonder if it would be just as effective and a bit less work to use a few bolts with washers and nuts in the bottom of the crate to make pegs which would fit in the spaces of the rack. I don't even have a crate. So I'm not even sure why I'm watching this, but it's nice to get ideas.
@cjhoyle
@cjhoyle 3 года назад
I think it could be tough to get the bolts positioned in exactly the spots you need them since the gaps in the milk crate are so large. Also, you'd have the metal of those bolts rubbing up against the metal of the rack (usually aluminum) which could cause damage over time through wear. But certainly many other alternatives exist!

Thanks! While milk crates can carry a wide variety of different shapes and sizes of items, I do also have a small bike trailer for larger items. That's what I used to carry my bandsaw home from the store: cjhoyle.com/music/ukebuild/ (it's the second photo on that page).

@@cjhoyle Impressive! I built a cargo trailer from an old child's trailer I found. I hadn't imagined hauling things like that! 🙂

@@matthugg9358 Thanks! For the record, is only a small 9 inch bandsaw. However, since then I've adapted that same trailer for carrying my 8.5 foot whitewater kayak :) ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LyU9RWm-Bwg.html
