This is How I Go PLASTIC FREE Grocery Shopping on my Bike

I've been riding my bike to get groceries for years (it's easier than you think, and FUN) and now I'm doing it PLASTIC FREE! The evils of single use plastic are well documented. It's toxic, it's filling up our oceans and landfills, it's poisoning our water systems, and it's increasing our dependency on oil (just to name a few). In this video I visit Nude Foods in Boulder, a true ZERO WASTE grocer. Check them out at nudefoodsmarket.com

Love your point about how biking to get groceries encourages us not to overbuy. I tend to buy more fresh, more local when I bike shop. Bonus: Nude Foods delivers for busy families and students who may not always have time to shop. As you noted, with even just two panniers and a bungee cord or two I often can get sooooo much groceries, and bike home with 100s of pounds of food. It's heavy, but not that hard, the bike is doing most of the work. And now with ebikes, boom! You could put it all in a cart behind the bike if we wanted. But main thing you nail: it's more fun, when we open our hearts to caring about our planet, one another, whales, bears, fish, birds. Caring is more fun! And when we work to save the planet we all depend on, some magic happens. Community is healthy, helps our resilience in times of stress or if we're having a hard time. Biking is healthy. Much of the food is actually cheaper, and healthier. And when we vote with our dollars-care about local jobs, independent moms n pops, instead of paying our hard-earned bucks to the Man (Bezos, often), we can all be better off, keep money in our communities. Love your big heart brother- ~ Waylon

awesome store and video ... we got one too but it is not organic unfortunately... 😖 oh please don't get an EBIKE just because ur groceries might be too heavy ... just bike a bit slower for a while and soon u will build that extra stamina to get u over that hill with ur extra weight... even I figured out how to shop for three with a normal bike. I didn't even have any bike bags. I simply stacked three midsized cardboard boxes on top of each other and secured them with two bungees ... the boxes are from the store and made to hold 20+ pounds of apples ... the store would have tossed them too... remember plastic is bad but the production of batteries is even worse ... ok ok UNLESS u dump ur car 🤣👍

Bike commuting for groceries is awesome, been doing it for years. It tends to make me shop smarter and not buy as much. I become a lot more aware of what I am buying and plan out my food a lot better than when I buy. Also, kudos to the women for admitting that there are times when we need plastic. It is something that is needed in the medical field. The rest of us can work to reduce our plastic usage as much as we can.

This is great, you are lucky to have store like this in Boulder. I live in the Netherlands, and we are just starting with zero waste shopping. But grocery shopping on a bike is the standard here, on average, I think 60% of grocery shopping is done with a bicycle, and in Amsterdam, it is probable over 85%. I appreciate that you speak out more about your ideas of how to live a responsible life, and that you always look at the positive things that we as individuals can do. Thanks for the inspiration.

When I cycled everywhere in SoCal between 97 and 2006. I had panniers on my bike. I would go grocery shopping and fill the saddle bags. I would also carry a backpack for any extras. I would bike to the market and back, which was about 3.5 miles total. I lived up on a hill with a 400 meter climb. It was always an experience climbing that street on a bike with groceries. Thank you for the video. It brought back good memories. You have fully inspired me to get back in the saddle. Your videos made me realize how much I miss biking everywhere. Again, Thank you

I’ve been car-free in central Denver for over 3 years. My bike broke 2 years ago & had been exclusively on foot since, with a little transit for long jaunts. It’s not easy to buy & consume primarily fresh produce without a car, but it can be done. Ironically, I found it easier to buy groceries when I’m on foot than on bike because I can buy more as I can carry two bags by hand with my backpack full-that’s when transit helps!

Nice to see that someone can avoid plastic. Here in my city 10% heat with soft coal, 5% heat with hard coal, 40% heat with burner oil, I heat with electric baseboard (getting a heat pump on the 28th) 30% heat with electric basebord and the remainder use Scotian Shelf natural gas. Our power comes from about 30 hydro dams and 1 50 year old CANDU Nuclear reactor on a medium level active fault line. Locally we have a refinery (North Americas largest and newest 2012) that ships one to two tankers of nylon resin to be dumped in the UN approved ocean disposal site off Somalia, (cause of the pirates). Saudi crude leaves nylon where as Alberta Crude has tar as the reminant part. Tar gets used up in construction! Because of the left over unsellible nylon that gets dumped at sea, I am on the fence on using plastic vs ocean dumping nylon resin mixed with unsellable solvents. No question neither is good just which is worse, and which is better! So many factors to everything. _________________________________________________________________________________________________ PS. CO² is likely going to be backburnered by the mass wasting of the arctic permafrost that is melting from our stupid developments above the 60th parallel and not so much our fossil fuel use. The mass wasting releases huge amounts of methane CH⁴ gas. Methane does not absorbe into our oceans, also vegitation does not ingest methane so it can exist for hundreds of years and according to PBS NOVA each molcule is 43 times the greenhouse effect of CO² (Environment Canada says methane is 9X CO²). Eather way both are really bad! We need to stop all northern developments, all arctic ice breaking (except for local harbor clearing) all construction way up there, frankly we need to remove every non aborigional person who lives up there to keep the heat reflective white snowy ground cover everywhere even on the oceans! If we fail we all lose!

Shopping by bike is fun and so convenient. I can use a shopping bag bungeed on the rack or panniers or even a trailer. At times I just walk since I live in city and areas are still laid out like all inclusive villages around 50% don't own any cars. There's a choice of many buses (peak times every 6 minutes), trains, underground, car share, bike share, taxis, walking and riding. Around the corner has many shops including one similar to your Nude shop. Ours is too expensive to shop in regularly at the moment. Most walk to the shops because it's too much of a hassle to be driving around finding the limited parking places. That takes up more time than the 5-10 minute walk to get there. I found that out when they did a local survey. I use the bike when I want a ride or want to shop further away or I'm passing by on my work commute. I also use it when I want to carry a lot. It's great to take stuff to the reuse/recycling centre too.

I love riding my bike to get groceries. I have an online store so I take my packages each day and stop by our small local grocery store to get just what I need for dinner or lunch the next day. It's a thirteen mile trip in total. I did it every day for 7 days and lost 5 lbs. Our grocery is smaller than the produce section in most big grocery stores but I almost never have trouble finding what I need and I know all the people who work there. I see them every day.

My bicycle grocery shopping Pro tip is the fact that ortlieb panniers can actually clip on to the side of the most grocery carts. I fill the panniers as I shop that way I know it all fits. Then at the register everything gets scanned and goes right back into the panniers, no grocery bags needed.

This was a wonderful video. Wish all city had this type of store. I am changing my life style I am trying to bike to my every day errands. Targets only one mile from my house “why do I drive?” The groceries store is presenting a bit more of a challenge, I will have to ride the stroud at one of the intersections that merges on the by pass. Though I am a confident rider my special needs son loves to go to the grocery stores with me. So I have not yet figured out how to take him with me. He also has therapy once a week that I would love him to ride a bike there(along side of me) but at this point I have not figured out a safe way to get there.

Thank you for this video. It’s really inspiring to here you and Waylon talk! Also it’s really interesting to learn about the differences between 🇺🇸 and 🇸🇪. In all Swedish cities there are small recycling stations in abundance. There everyone can deposit plastics, carton, metall products, glass etc etc. it’s really easy available. In Sweden we don’t have any land fills and everyone goes to their city recycling stations. There you can deposit bigger things like sofas, bigger things of metall, old freezers, cell phones etc. If you have any nice things you don’t need anymore you can put them in a special house for the Red Cross to sell in their shop. Also there is an extra fee when you buy certain containers of plastic and aluminum (such as Coke cans etc). You got your money back when you recycle the container. Where I live, riding you’re bike to work/school and the grocery store is a normal everyday thing. Although many people are really relying on their cars. It would be really interesting to learn about you’re situation in the US compared to this. What are you’re options when it comes to recycling in your everyday life? It would be so interesting to see a video about this!

Would love a Nude Foods near me. I lack the business acumen, maybe these ladies could franchise their idea. And another note. One kind of rice? Sorry. Jasmine rice for Thai, aged Basmati rice for Indian and Persian, brown rice for the rest.🤔 Seriously. Really liked this video. And speaking of Costco, looks like they are offering Priority bicycles
@duzer

I hope they're able to franchise someday, it seems to be popular in Boulder. As for the rice, they do have different types, just not 5 brands for each type. Cheers!
