In this video tutorial I show how to take an ordinary fan with a pull chain and add a remote control unit to it for about $30. It adds a convenience and you can save some money too!
The actual remote I used:

...very well done video... thanks! Best thing about the video is you did it on a ceiling hugger, which is what I have... now I know to ignore the recommendation not to do it. Question: The pull chain switch for the fan on my Hampton Bay broke internal to the switch. It is in the off position. Do I need to replace that switch or can I convert to remote with it as is.

HI, I'm glad I was able to show an example on how to do a ceiling hugger! I'm still using that fan with no problem. The fan switch needs to stay on high so the remote can send voltages appropriate for medium and low, so you might have to replace the switch. If you knew which wires controlled high, you could tie those wires together and bypass the switch, but without a wiring diagram, it'd be difficult to tell which ones to tie together.

@@TheHomeImprovementChannel Thank you for responding to my question. I sort of thought based on the video that I'd need to replace the switch to make sure it was turned on. Please keep the great videos coming and have a wonderful Memorial Day!

What if he remote has no code switches

Normally they do. IF you have your instructions does it say anything about programming the remote to the receiver? If not, maybe it is already setup to work. They usually have a way to lock in the remote to just that receiver so if you have more than one fan they won't be turning on and off in other rooms...

How did you wire tie the receiver inside the canopy? Did you use zip ties?

On this particular one I did because there was no where to mount the receiver. A lot of the mounting hardware that comes with fans actually has a place to slide a receiver through...

I’m not sure that my base (that my base that allows for a down-rod) will house the remote receiver. It’s not a ceiling fan that’s flush to the ceiling.

OIC... I'd have to see a picture. If I remember right, the one in the video wasn't to receiver friendly either. I had to improvise and make it work, so it just depends how much room there is.
