This is a very very good tip for adding thresholds to a graph chart. I actually tested it on a line chart (instead of a bar one) and it worked as well. I must add that you actually can turn the line length dynamic and automatic (based on the number of entries), by just right clicking on the line, choose Format Error Bars, select Custom on the Error Amount, and then click on Specify Value. Then, on the Positive Error Value you can select a whole column (for example). This way, you don't need to manually change the length of the line every time a new data entry is made. Nevertheless, this video rocks, so thank you so much for that, man!

As we are using the Error bar for the Target Line, we need to create the Legend Manually. You can add the definition for the Line using Text Box in the Insert Tab. Use the Insert shape in the same Tab to add a dotted line.

So this is great but messing up my chart, my chart has all months of the year but if you only have info for Jan and Feb the line still goes to 12 and your table does not auto adjust, could you tell me how I can take care of it?
Ajay great video but I have a doubt. Why you put 0.5 on X values data series? In my case yy-axis values are percentages. When I put 0.5, the plot goes too much for the right (doesn't center the plot like yours).
Thank you for the compliment. I got the value 0.5 after many tries and it worked for me. The point is, it can done, you just need to play with your values.
What would you do if you used a dates as the x-axis? I am entering columns for every week and have the weeks categorized as text to reduce the space between the columns. Unfortunately, I believe that is making the target line not start at the left edge of the chart when I enter .5 as the value for the x-axis.
Agreed, I have a chart I'm updating daily - using an error bar as a threshold line is a creative workaround, but isn't going to work for our needs without constantly updating.
Hi If possible kindly advise on the below issue: I want to put grade in Y axis instead of numbers. My grades are excellent, good and satisfactory, where excellent means 3, good means 2 and satisfactory means 1. I want to make a chart to show an employee’s progress of five years, like an employee got good in 1st year and excellent in third year and so on. Will this be possible? It would be a great help. Hai Ajay, I need your help on excel graph for x axis data point won't show, for example the graph will show daily result until 1year, means the data point is more, but after I key in the result, the dot won't show, it should have show 123, but now the result on x axis show 13579... How to see x axis result for 2468?
Ajay An and, thank for your feedback, I 've make graph for gas chromatography, and daily key in result per lots from January until now, example the lot number is A001,A002,A003,A004,......,but now the graph lot number show A001,A003,A005...., I couldn't find result for A002,A004...I tried to adjust but it doesn't work, could it be the line graph lot number too many?
@@AjayAnandXLnCAD , yes it line graph, the lot number of the results around 200 more results, may be it a reason why some lot numbers result is hidden. Today I tried to do above lesson to my pc, but it won't work, because I used Microsoft 2010 version.
I don't have a copy of Excel 2010 to check it. The second method should work with almost every version of Excel. Moreover, to make the best out of Excel, I suggest you to move to Office 365 Subscription.

I suppose some corporations might be behind in rolling out updates & upgrades to their employees, so if you're out there & your Corp is asking you to complete data work with outdated data tools/software... Speak up! It will make your job easier & time spent less. :-)
