In this episode of Dirtcheapdaily, Aaron goes through a complete tutorial on how to install an AUX port or headphone jack to any car! This is specific to a 2005 Subaru Legacy Outback, but it will work similarly to any car the doesn't come with a headphone plug in from the factory.
Here are links to all the parts that were installed in the video:

I just put mine in. Took about 3 hours. I mounted the unit inside the trim by the shifter and used adhesive velcro to hold it in place. Regarding pulling the wires from the connectors on the cigarette lighter: There are tiny swing up "doors" on the outside of the plastic body for each wire. Those need to be carefully pried out on the side that is not hinged- LOOK carefully. Once you have those open, the wires with the spring assembly will only come out if you use a tiny screwdriver to depress a tiny piece of plastic that is visible if you look connection end. One side slides over the prong connector that extends from the bottom of the lighter assembly, but on the opposite side of the connector you will see a smaller square opening with metal showing. You will see a tiny plastic tab there against the tiny metal piece. Wedge the small screwdriver between the tiny plastic and metal piece and the wire with its clip assembly will be released from the connector housing. If you pay attention, you will save time by noting which way the wire/clip assembly came out, and therefore goes back in. The wire/clips are different sizes so you won't get them mixed up. I used bullet connectors on the power/ground lines going from the cigarette lighter to the iSimple so that I could easily detach the wires if necessary. I used electrical tape on most connections to help keep things from working themselves loose. I put the switch in the same spot you did- drilled the hole with a 1/2" bit but had to enlarge it using a round file. It probably would have worked perfectly with a 5/8" drill bit. The unit works flawlessly. I set the channel selector to 88.3 and turned the gain all the way up. There is NO STATIC at all when playing media through the 3.5mm connector. There always is with the cigarette lighter FM broadcasters. I also just figured out that for those of us who have a cigarette lighter in the same compartment as where the Aux wire is, can buy an mp3 player that uses the cigarette lighter for power and has Aux OUT to pump audio through the FM module. The wire and the player in the same compartment! I just ordered this one: www.amazon.com/gp/product/B078MWTK2B/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Since the lighter is switched with the key it will turn on when I turn the car on and start playing mp3s through the newly installed module. Reviews on it indicate it has a random play feature but I'm not sure. There seem to be others that also have the AUX OUT feature (most are line in) and this one was about $15.00. If it works it will truly be stealth, all hidden. I also ordered this one which appears to have a dedicated AUX OUT (the first said in/out) and will test both www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SNHL6BH/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 NEITHER unit has a random play ability. PRO tip: To my horror, I detected some HISS when playing my music through the cable, the same thing you would hear as tape hiss when listening to a cassette. I found that by turning the gain up on both the iSimple and the player, while turning the volume DOWN on the car stereo itself almost eliminates it. (SEE MY UPDATE BELOW REGARDING THE STATIC ISSUE) The model in the second link is (TrekPow) smaller than the first and has a nice control knob which makes it easy to skip and reply songs without having to take your eyes off the road. However, its USB ports are on the sides which results in a messy starfish pattern of cables in the storage compartment where I have it. The first model has both USB ports on the top (AUX out is on the side) which is cleaner, but it has small buttons for skipping/replaying tracks. Both seem to have the same controller chip as they have a very similar (if not the same) voice announcement “Connecting” when it turns on. I really wish someone would produce one of these players with the ability to RANDOM play the music. I think all it would take is some adding to the software. Whoever does will have me as a buyer. UPDATE: I ended up using the the TrekPow player. The static I was hearing was from the TrekPow broadcasting on channel 88.3 while the i-Simple was using that channel to play music through the wired connection. In order to resolve this, I adjusted the TrekPow broadcast channel above channel 96 FM where I heard the static completely drop out. Apparently the broadcast signal from the TrekPow is strong enough that it bleeds over into 88.3 until it is adjusted far away from that channel. The music is now completely static free. Having to reach into the compartment to forward a song was a pain so I actually drilled a hole from the passenger side front corner to the inside of the compartment. I drilled this at a downward angle so when I pull the controller arm I attached it actually exerts slight downward pressure on the player to keep it seated in the plug. It is barely noticeable behind the seatbelt buckle that sticks up from the inside part of the seat. I drilled a very small hole in the control dial of the TrekPow (it’s plastic and easily pulls off) large enough for for a small zip-tie to fit through. I attached this to an approx. 4 inch long piece of thin steel from an old wiper blade retainer which fit perfectly through the hole and has enough length to be gripped to pull on to rotate the control knob about ½” enough to forward the player to the next song. To create a tighter fit of the TrekPow player in the plug I used about a 1” piece by 1/2" wide piece of adhesive backed soft foam strip insulation (about 3/8” thick, but highly compressible) which I attached to the player on an area where it doesn’t make contact with the electrical connections. This tightened it up well and it now takes some effort to pull it from the plug. It’s working very well and I am happy with it.

Link for the female adapter no longer works- order the pair together from the following link if you have a 2005 Subaru Outback www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000K53QBA/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It is a cool mod for old radios/Head units or for the people who don't want to give up their factory radio. though the sound has poor quality..

Seems like a lot of work in the older rig for it to remain stock while not looking stock at all. (Different color head unit, on star delete, stretchy cables etc.)

Does soldering the ground and power wires to the 12v port in the center console make the 12v port lose any power?

Where is the antenna cable? I have an 06 Legacy with same headunit and bought this kit. I watched your old video on taking the head unit apart and didnt see the atenna cable. Is it just sitting behind the head unit and you just moved it to the bottom to access it?
@Dirtcheapdaily
@Dirtcheapdaily 7 лет назад
+Shelby Hilke it's a different antennae cable than normal, that's why you need those two adapters. It should be at the bottom on the driver's side. It just looks like a normal connector

I did order those adapters. I was just wondering because on your video you said something about messing with the head unit. So that grey cable will be there like yours was without taking the head unit off? Thanks!
@Dirtcheapdaily
@Dirtcheapdaily 7 лет назад
+Shelby Hilke gotcha, yea it should be really close to where it was in the video. It might be a bit farther back, but I think you should be able to reach it without pulling the head unit 👍🏻

Dirtcheapdaily perfect! Really love you channel and glad I found it! I just recently got my 06 Legacy and falling in love. Just owned a BMW that costed me an arm and leg constantly with repairs. Keep up with cool videos like this! One thing I was disappointed in my Subaru was no aux, I always listen to music haha

Unsteady signal. Goes in and out and half the time the radio station overrides connection to your phone and static takes over.
