In this week’s episode, we discuss how to add an ethereal glow for calming landscape photos. Perhaps one of the most popular trends in landscape photography over the years is to add an ethereal and painterly look to your photos using techniques such as the Orton Effect. There's multiple different reasons why photographers do this, but for me the reason is simply to reduce the cold and lifeless feeling that an overly sharp digital photo can have and replace it with a more soft and ethereal look..sort of like film. And not only are there multiple reasons to do this there's also multiple different ways to apply this look as well.
In this video, I review the various different ways I add an ethereal glow to my landscape photos. Now if you want to add the actual Orton Effect to your images then you'll have to use Photoshop for that, which I show in this video as well, but there are still plenty of creative ways to add a similar ethereal effect only using Lightroom. There aren't many photo editing techniques that I use on each and every one of my landscape photos, but applying a softening and painterly glow to my images is one of the most often used techniques for me.
So I hope the next time you sit down to edit one of your photos that you'll feel comfortable testing out some of the editing techniques in this video to create a more ethereal and calming landscape image.
If you enjoyed this video, please consider giving it a thumbs up and let me know what you think in the comments below - I guarantee I'll get back to ya.
Thanks for watching everyone!
-Mark D.

Hi Mark! Just revisited this video for probably the 3rd or 4th time. While I do enjoy the results you achieve with these effects, could you please explain the reasoning behind focus stacking and exposure blending? It seems to me that these Orton Effect techniques simply reintroduce the “imperfections” achieved by taking only one image. Why go to all of the work to achieve a “perfect” image by combining several together, if you then want to intentionally reduce the sharpness and clarity? Any help you could give to improve my understanding would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, and keep the videos coming!

That was very helpful, thank you for walking through that process. ok now this doesn't have anything to do with the content but I cant help wondering about that lens on the shelf behind you, it's there in like every video. What lens is it? It kind of looks like a Canon L, but I guess it could be something else. Is there any reason it has become a permanent fixture on your wall? I guess it could be like one of those Canon L series mugs...

I was asking myself .. do you go for some small adjustments in lightroom first like tone curve, exposure or whatever and then hit ,,open in photoshop" to add the orton effect?
