If you're hankering for the look of film grain without the smelly chemicals of film processing, you can easily get it "in the camera".

Grain in photos and movies remind me of the old good days! One of main reasons I enjoy watching the 70s movies is the grainy picture! For me, grain is the top of nostalgia pyramid, if that even makes sense!

We brought a Lumix camera a few months ago. We're both mature! and it's our first proper camera. Talk about struggle! We had no idea what the buttons and dials on the camera were... then we came upon your channel...WOW... now are enjoying the learning process and really having lots of fun. Thank you!!

Hello Ray and Jo. Welcome to my channel. Yes, every camera has a steep learning curve these days. You're holding a super computer in your hands. All the best in your learning. If all else fails iA mode will do you well until you're a bit more comfortable with everything. Check out my G9 Playlists. Cheers and thanks for stopping by!

Back in the day…I liked Kodak tri-x film for grain…perhaps developed in Rodinal

Ah yes, Tri-X with Rodinal was a photo school favourite.

FP4 and XP2 the fp was what i could buy cheap from a photography teacher at school. And the xp as you used colour processing so some times it would pick up a colour tint.

Ah yes, I remember the XP2. For those of us who didn't like film processing by hand.

I love to shoot film. If you want clearly visible film grain push HP5+ to ISO 800 or 1600 then stand develop the film in Rodinal for 30 minutes. For really strong grain do the same with Foma 400.

Sounds lovely! Thanks for sharing. Cheers.

Thanks Marlene, another interesting foray into the Lumix menu. Probably not something I would use myself mostly shooting wildlife, where I find I get quite enough grain anyway 😀.

Yes, I’m with you there. But please remember it’s “noise artifacts” from high ISO, not grain. Thanks for watching!

I've seen a lot of hype for film simulations in digital cameras, but this is the first video I've seen that explains what that means. (Closest thing to a grain filter in my GX85/0 is 'rough monochrome'. Let's see what the next GX has.)

Thank you so much! Very generous of you. Yes I look forward to new in-camera filters too. Cheers.

Ilford HP4 if I remember correctly. With Nikon F3 HP. But, I just the the G9 options for B&W. I use L Monochrome D. p.s. WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR GREAT COLLECTION OF SHIRTS. I love them!🤠
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
Hi Keith. I loved Ilford FP4 and HP5. Both had lovely grain. Yes, I use L Mono D as well. Just that added bit of juicy contrast. Glad you dig my shirts. ☺ I'm always on the lookout for ones that will look good on camera. Cheers and thanks for stopping by for a chat.

Super thanks, This is cool. Grapping my camera now to set up a "photo style" of this. I always take out the color in post. Do you add film grain "in camera" on the other profiles and on colored profiles? I wish I knew somebody who kept a chemicals lab just to experience it. Back in the day I did not even know what a camera was. LOL. Every time I see an old movie or even Netflix's Crown I wish I could go to a lab just once for a day or session. LOL a tourist attraction.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
There are more and more wet labs turning up. You might try looking for an art school adult Ed course. The school I used to teach at offers b&w darkroom courses. But no, I don’t typically add film gran in post. But I have been known to really smush (very technical term there 🤪) my tone scale to be even more high contrast than what you can get in camera.
@MagicChinaMan
@MagicChinaMan Год назад
nice!
@Photovintageguy
@Photovintageguy Год назад
It’s pretty good for jpg and guess you could have raw also. I plan to shoot b&w film after many years of not. This may be good practice first to get used to it. I could also probably take examples of my favorite film and then try to get close to taking a shot on film of a same subject, in broad daylight. And then match it in camera to the same shot on digital later in camera. That would give me something even closer practice with.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
You don’t see this grain effect when you shoot raw files. You have to add it in post processing. Have fun practicing!

The smell of stop bath is the one I hated. Working in poorly ventilated darkrooms , the permeated smell of chemicals on my hands, oh for the glory days of film processing.😂
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
Ha yes, those glory days! I also worked in a pro photo lab and processed E6 and C41 film for a few years. Perma smell up my nose! The kids these days don't know what they're missing ;)

it doesn't work on lumix g85
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
It should, unless those grain settings were added after the G85 came out. It works with my older Lumix cameras. But they don't have the L Mono D setting. Just the plain Monochrome. I guess you will have to add the grain in post processing.
@seungcheoo303

Likely not available for your G85. Check that you have the latest firmware for the camera. Some of the later monochrome modes for the G9 were added with firmware updates.

May I kindly suggest you look that up in the owners manual? As I expect you’ll have plenty more questions. And it’s faster than me writing out all the steps for you. The pdf is searchable.
