Coffee Sandwich Good luck! It makes for a fun project! But wear gloves when you remove the glass, I just converted another tank last weekend and got 2 cuts working with the glass. Be safe, haha!
This is an amazing video thank you for this! one thing though @ 5:42 PLEASE WEAR A MASK when sanding glass!!!!! Silicosis Is not something to mess with.... a warning for people in the description would be awesome! once again thanks for the awesome vid!!
This is an awesome video. Could you tell me roughly how long it took to do this project once you had all of the materials? Including cure time for the silicone? I would love to do this for my boy but he only has the one tank currently.
Thank you for making this it helped me so much! I’ve been toying with ideas of what to do when I upgrade my leopard geckos tank and not I’m definitely going to do this!
Awesome. Going to do the same. But for future reference , you may use that miter saw you used for a bench to cut the rails. The aluminum won’t hurt that blade
Did you put the panes in before replacing the top trim? I assume you had to, but in the video you said you were going to put the trim back on and then insert the panes. ??? It looks great!
what was the black block thing you were hammering with the mallet while getting the top frame off with. I have the same tank and am taking this on too. I've been cutting the silicone for a while now.
Bonventur cfinisher It was actually a tool for installing cork flooring. Odd thing we had lying around, but it worked. Maybe you could find an equivalent at a hardware store. Yeah, cutting the silicone and removing the top frame took us a good few hours on the first tank we did. It just took time before we developed out strategies. Send me a picture or post a video of your tank when you're done though, I'd love to see how it comes out! :)
this is an awesome job :D any ideas on how to add a bottom piece that the sliding glass is on top off; like you're planning on doing a couple inches of dirt?
Thanks! I thought about doing that, I think it would make it easier for using a substrate. You could probably add a metal strip at the bottom of some sort and attach it with silicone... and then maybe the glass could go in front of the strip!
Tried this with my 90 gallon tank...turns out the glass is a lot thicker and doesn't fit in the sliders. I've decided to put half of the glass back in place and the other half will be a hinged door. Measure the thickness of your glass people!!
+Mark Mniece Thanks! The first tank we did, I'd probably say 3 hours, maybe 3 and a half! Removing the rim and getting the glass pane out is definitely the most time consuming part!
Hey what are the dimensions on this tank? It looks like one of those really narrow fish aquariums and I thought that they'd be too thin for my beardie. He's 18 inches long last I checked
tbh yo should have used silicone on all of it. the reason silicone didnt work for you is because you didnt rub it down with rubbing alcohol first. not sure why that works but it does. also helps if you scratch the glass where the handle woulda been and scratched the inside of the handle too would give something for the silicone to grip to
No! Hot glue will NOT hold. It's also not moisture-proof, which it kind of needs to be when making a reptile tank. The silicone needs to be aquarium-grade, so none of those "mold-resistant" ones (they release toxic fumes which are very poisonous to reptiles).
Haha, no. I just open his cage when I'm in my room with the door shut. I was kind of planning on letting him roam my bedroom, but he never really wanted to. I guess he likes his cage which is a good thing. :)
I'd be careful making that ramp go so far up under the light, if you aren't staying within a safe distance your animal could get burns. That's way too close.
Really the only specific item that I SPECIFICALLY recommend is the caulk, which there is a link to in the description. Everything else is going to vary depending on where you buy it and what type of tank you have.
Lord_Paul Lol I don't use sand. It can be dangerous for bearded dragons because it can get in their orifices and some may even eat it and that can't be good.
leilanihagen someone better tell all the wild bearded dragons to stop living on sand and loose substrate then. Let’s notify the government of Australia so they can remove all the dangerous natural substrate and put kitchen towels over all of Australia.
You didnt show using the glass doors... nor did you put the handles on right. Now I have to find a different video that did this correctly because I just wasted time of my life lol
I guess if you're lazy and have money to burn, sure. But good luck finding one in a decent size for $90. Personally I'd rather make a little effort and do something myself than to blow a bunch of money because I'm afraid to get my hands dirty.
