Thanks for this. It shouldn't be this convoluted. I suppose if you wanted to apply a freeform gradient, you could make the type a compound path and make that a mask to a freeform gradient box behind it?

Thank you for the tutorial. Works great! I just don't understand why everything in illustrator has to be so **** backwards compared to Photoshop when it's the same company making the same programs. When are they just going to combine them both and only give us options for vector. Or bare minimum make the controls the same in both programs so I don't have to learn everything twice.

Thanks it was a very simple and straightforward tutorial. I had never used illustrator before!!. I was able to do it. But somehow it does not work correctly for 3D text with depth. It colors each character individually not in direction. how to make it work for 3D text.with gradient from left to right.
