In this video, I show you how I would wire hazard lights (4-way flashers) into an existing turn signal circuit. This could be used for a hotrod, car, truck, motorcycle, ATV, dirt bike, side by side, go cart, or whatever kind of vehicle needs working hazard lights. There are many different methods of wiring 4 way Flashers, Hazards, and Turn Signals, but I prefer to wire them as I describe in the video because I feel like it is a safest method. Below is a list of the relays, the non-LED turn signal flasher, fuses, the incandescent 1157-style bulbs, 1157 style bulb sockets, and the 3 way toggle switch I used to make the entire circuit work properly.
Items used in this video (You may not need to buy in these quantities, but I did.)
🔗 5 Pack of 5-pin Bosch Style Relays - amzn.to/2OfiwXT
🔗 10 Pack of Fuse holders - amzn.to/3cU4CoD
🔗 6 Pack of 1157 Bulb Sockets - amzn.to/3jtztJU
🔗 Double Pole Single Throw DPST Switch - amzn.to/3ozTGlM
🔗 3 Way Toggle DTSP Switch (Double Throw, Single Pole, not-momentary) (Diff brand than video) - amzn.to/3abAeDw
🔗 10 Pack of 1157 Bulbs - amzn.to/3a1Wa4N
🔗 2 Pin NON-LED Turn Signal Flasher (Diff brand than video) amzn.to/2YXOslJ
🔗 272 piece fuse variety pack amzn.to/3k48cNt

I have almost zero knowledge of electronics and I wanted to learn something by building a simple toy for my kid. I planned to use two groups of three red blinking LEDs each for "turn signals" and three white LEDs for "headlights". I also wanted to add a couple of green blinking LEDs for the signal lights on the "dashboard" when the blinkers are on, and one blue LED for the indicator that the headlights are on. Each group of turn signals would have one switch (single throw), there would be one more for the headlights and maybe one "main" switch for the whole circuit. I also wanted to add one more LED which would be on whenever the main switch is on. So in the last few days I've been browsing youtube for useful tutorials and that's how I found this one. And I like it :). Since I have an issue with my LEDs blinking at different frequencies (and I have no idea why that's happening), I'm now thinking about using relays and making something like you did in this video.

Thanks, just the clarity I needed. Working on wiring from scratch using a french combo twisty push stick that is headlights, park lights, flash to pass, turn signals and horn! The original hazard had 10 wires and trying to integrate all of this into a 21 circuit painless wiring harness in a french motorhome that has been completely stripped! The wiring diagrams were written by a french man drunk on red wine and you would have better luck trying to crack the code of the german enigma encoder from WWII !

I very much appreciate all your wiring instructional videos. I have found them invaluable. I'm working on a 1972 Ford F100 in which the turn signals work great but the hazard flashers don't blink and stay on constant. It looks like the simplest solution would be to add a flasher relay to the hazard circuit. All lights are LEDs so the installed and additional flasher relays are specifically for LED bulbs. It's never a dull moment. LOL
@WiringRescue
@WiringRescue 2 года назад
It sounds like you’re on the right track for sure. The hazards and turn signals often have separate flashers because the hazard circuits have power 24/7. The turn signals only have it with the key on. Good luck! I’m cheering for you!

My only question is now how about an explanation of how to isolate that circuit for brake lights if you use the white wire we're not supposed to be minding for running lights/tail lights or parking lamps, how do you wire the brake lights up with the turn signals and isolate front for back?

Im working on a 1966 Ford thunderbird that came with sequential turn signals. I have regular light from the light switch and also the brake lights work. I'm trying to figure out a way to hook up Led sequential lights. So far I have used your method to create the one side of the turn signal with the led flasher which works great. Im sure using the method above will work for both sides. How can I make a pause between each of the the 3 rear left and right light bulbs. Each are 1157's So there are three 1157's on the right side and 3 1157's on the left side. I would imagine it would take perhaps a resisitor between each bulb to slow down the power before it reaches each bulb.

Cool. I liked the first video and the explanation of the hazard switch actually makes perfect sense. It was a kind of why didn't I think of that moment. Now for another curve ball. How would you wire this all up to make the turn signal switch override the hazard switch? That is, if the hazards are on and you want to indicate that you will be turning to one side, the lights on the other side must temporarily switch of until you cancel the turn signal switch.

Could you use a single pole single throw switch with 2 wires to the indicator switch instead of the double pole switch? Just wondering if that would work. Thanks.

No. Because then when you use the turn signal switch to either side, all the lights will still come on due to the "short" at the single pole switch.

Is it possible to add led flashers to the automobile hazard light circuit in order to utilize the vehicle hazard switch instead of having to add an external switch? I have a transit bus that has two foot button switches for each side signal. How could I connect a hazard switch in this case?

How would you wire in spot lights to your turn signals so you can see where you're turning?

Hey! I followed your method here and I can't find a double throw single pole hazard rocker switch for my roxor. Would match all my other switches. I thought about buying a rocker switch with alot if poles. Long as the wiring diagram is correct then just popping the top off. Not sure What else to do

I think ill add a relay to the Harvard switch, that way it can send power to both signal lights

You didn't demonstrate the turn signals functioning after wiring in the hazard switch. What about using other switches? I have a 7 pin On/Off/On switch and a 5 pin hazard switch (dpst). Can't I use these? Okay, so it looks like I cannot use the hazard switch with 5 pins. Only 1 pin is an output. So, do you have recommendations on a particular switch that is a rocker with illuminated label?

Will it short if you use either side indicators while hazard is on, for argument sake.

I was wondering what if just connect the power supply to the flasher relay and the output to the switches therefore not needing the 4or5 pin relays? Will it work?

It depends. If you use the wrong amperage switch, wire, or fuse, it will possibly light on fire. I always prefer less fire.

I am running led directional lights .Do I have to go through a relay?

It depends. Is your switch rated at a high enough amperage to handle the amperage draw of the light bulbs? Are the wires and flasher also rated at a high enough amperage rating for the bulbs you are using? If so - then it should be fine. The only thing to watch out for at that point would be somebody in the future adding regular bulbs in place of LED’s and it burning the circuit. If you have the fuse properly sized though, it will pop the fuse before it burns the wires or switch. Hopefully that made sense. Lol. If not, I can try again.

Hi, I just bought a school bus and want to change the flashing lights at the top of the bus to be simply controlled by the on and off switch. I'm having trouble locating the "flasher relay", is it usually cylindrical like the one you used in this video and is it usually located in the fuse box? Thanks! I love your videos.

Generally they are cylindrical, but some are also black rectangles. They are almost always in or around the fuse box. I’m imagine that a bus may have a few fuse boxes though. Then again, I’ve never worked on a school bus, so I’m just guessing. Good luck on your search!

Hi there, would you happen to know why the hazard switch on my 1997 1.9td Fiat Ducato has 9 wires going to hazard switch. Trying to work out a fault but having trouble working out how the system is wired.

Do I need the "double pole singel throw " switch for the hazardlights or can I also use a normal single pole switch?

I need some help. What could cause everything to work except for the rear right brake light? Flashers work everywhere except the rear right. The turn signal works everywhere except the rear right BUT when I hit the brake and have the right turn signal on, the brake light works. Both filaments work when I connect them directly to a 12v power supply for the lightbulb in question. Could it be a bad turn switch or the hazard switch? Any suggestions?
