i would have cut a milk jug off taped it to the hose and catch the dust when drilling the ceiling .. bet the bed was covered in dust ,, i worked for a contractor 30 plus years ago we were doing drywall work in a phone company .. i held the hose under the sanding block as the boss sanded ..almost like father and son ..

I'm no electrician, but when he opened up the attic floor you could see both sets of BX wire that presumably feed the existing fixture and run to the next one. Why not put a new box in the attic and then feed down to the new switch? Then you could plaster over the box for the existing fixture. Also, for the ceiling box, why not move over 2 inches and use a box that could attach to the joist structure?
@Altenarian

Wow, I'd be worried about that old fabric wrapped wire insulation. In the telecom world (yes, I am a retired telecom guy) there was old wires wrapped in cloth and yes, even in paper which would just fall apart exposing the metal wire inside after many decades of use.
@WalterKnox
@WalterKnox 6 лет назад
Why is everybody so afraid of cloth wiring? If it was so "dangerous" the house would have burned down years ago. I am an electrician and have worked with alot of it no issues. Besides, this house most likely has "BX" cable which has a spiral wrapped flexible steel outer jacket to protect the wires within and provide a grounding path to all the metal boxes. Even if it is old knob and tube, with open single rubber insulated cloth covered wires (type R wire, and it is insulated with rubber and the cloth braid is there to protect the rubber) on porcelain knob insulators and porcelain tubes where the wires pass through framing members, and a mouse chews it bare, nothing will happen because the wires are several inches apart (minimum 4 inches for concealed, in-wall, floor and ceiling knob and tube wiring) and on insulators, so they cannot short or arc. In fact it is a very safe wiring method as is armored BX cable, if left alone, not overloaded by installing too large of a fuse on each circuit, and not tapped into or meddled with by homeowners "adding into" the system. I also have many vintage lights and appliances etc with original cloth cords, and they are as safe as any modern cords, as long as they are in good shape. People are actually afraid to plug in old lamps, etc with cloth cords, and ones in perfect condition! It is a phobia imparted on us by companies wanting us to buy new and get rid of good old stuff, and electricians looking to make money off of rewiring a house that doesn't need it. There is nothing at all wrong with older cloth wire, and ANY wiring can start a fire, regardless of insulation type if it has issues or is bodged and incorrectly installed or fused/circuit breakered. Cheers!

I have a newer home with an open attic. Some of my bedrooms have light switches connected to wall plugs (For lamps I guess). Can I just pull the wire up the wall from the plug and run it to the center of the ceiling? Only the top plug is connected to the light switch, so I'm assuming there is another electrical connection to the bottom plug, am I right or am I about to start my house on fire?
@calebburns4346
@calebburns4346 6 лет назад
You can remove the switch wires and reuse them. The outlet will have to be replaced though, because for a switched outlet like you describe the metal strip that links the two gangs together was cut to allow consent voltage for one and switched voltage for the other.

@calebburns4346
@calebburns4346 6 лет назад
Buy cutting access holes at every joist and at the top of the wall and running the wire. Unless the drywall is mounted to strapping on the joist there is no other way. If there is already a switch and line voltage then the big box stores carry a retrofit fan box and mounting bar for easy change out with out cutting a huge hole.

With access to the wiring coming down from the attic space, there is really no reason to leave that old junction box in the wall. The junction box could be relocated in the attic by pulling those wires up into the attic and then a new switch wire installed down to a switch box. This is just really a lazy way to do this conversion that avoids having to patch the wall where the old junction box would be removed.

I think it is merely an observation. A huge amount of heat loss is through the ceiling, less through the walls and even less through the floor so insulation in the ceiling is the absolute most important when it comes to saving energy and money. So we do hope the family puts insulation in their budget - sooner the better especially if living up north. Take care.

At 1:45, he mentions that there are two white and black wires and that there is an additional fixture/outlet that is fed. What happens to the wires leading to that fixture/outlet that we don't see? Where does their power supply come from if the current supply is going to be going solely to the bedroom light??
@notafanboy250
@notafanboy250 4 года назад
The bedroom light is being added* to the circuit. It doesn't replace the other run. The other fixture/outlet you're referring to is still tied in.

Can anyone advise or link me to the locating rod he used to drill up to the attic?
@thisoldhouse
@thisoldhouse 7 лет назад
It's an insulation rod- used to hold fiberglass insulation in a joist bay. The ends are pointed so they can be used as a feeler bit.

@@thisoldhouse Thanks for that! I was going crazy trying to figure out what he was using. I used to use old wire clothes hangers and just cut em up. Insulation rods would be much better and thinner.

Could he have just rain the main power wire down to the new box and pigtailed that into the switch and to the other wire that went to another outlet? Then he couldve hooked up the wire to the light from the switch and completely eliminated a need for a junction box. Then in the attic he couldve used 2 by 4s to make a stronger mounting bracket for that light. And did he just screw that new box into drywall? Wtf tha cant be sturdy can it?

Are you talking about those things that he was using as a drill bit to drill through into the ceiling? I believe those are the steel wire bat insulation holders that you can buy in the insulation department at most home centers and you just sharpen the end a little bit and they act as a drill bit!
@scotthelm77

They are called "PEEP WIRE BITS" they are .032 x 36 inches. But you could cut them down to any length.

Single pole light switch - you screw the two black wires to the switch posts and tie off the white to each other separate from the switch.

Cheers!

Dunno about where you are but I find old rubber/ cloth wiring here in the UK the customer is immediately advised to get it rewired.. The stuff is dangerous as once it's disturbed it usually cracks then falls to bits exposing the conductors, not to mention the circuits they feed (generally lighting nowadays) aren't earthed

i dont know about where you are but in the us knob and tube wire is still up to code. as well as cloth bx wire, if you done mess with it and ring it around it is safe.

Usually love his videos, my one small comment on this one is that he shud not have used an NM cable in that metal box without a clamp...over time the NM cable will rub against that metal box and eventually create a potentially shocking situation. Easiest solution: use metal cable with metal boxes. Them Be my 2 cents.
