hello! if my school doesn’t report suspensions/disclose any disciplinary information to colleges, do I still have to self-report my suspension when colleges ask?

Hi Kristine, I recommend you confirm with your high school counselor if they will report it even if it seems like the standard, let's go ahead and check to be absolutely sure. Depending on the severity and how much you learned from your mistakes, you might want to disclose to show growth. If you want to go into more detail on this, you can join my free private facebook community to continue the conversation. facebook.com/groups/189940580171782

The lesson in this video actually applies to life in general. Mistakes happen- agreed! How you learn and grow from it is important. I like how Tiffany stresses taking responsibility and moving forward in a healthy manner. Her content is so meaningful.

Thanks for pointing out the impact of life lessons. There is so much to learn and these opportunities to develop are great ways for students to capitlize.

It’s so great that you’re highlighting this issue because there are students who don’t realize that they can be transparent and positively spin it so that it is a learning experience instead. Really good tips!

You're absolutely right. There are plenty of learning lessons that don't initially seem impactful until students reflect AND take action on improving. Those reflections are perfect for college application essays.

Thank you so much for the information of this super specific situation some students are facing. Back in 9th grade, I got caught selling d- and I always knew it would come back to bite me again in the future. I’ve always been a straight A student with a busy life with sports and clubs, but back when I was 14 I made a stupid decision to sell it for a little bit extra money. I never smoked, never drank, and solely only wanted money. But me being a junior now planning to apply for colleges later this year, I’ve been so crippled with the stress of getting accepted into college. I hate it and I hate the mistake my past self did because it absolutely not a reflection of who I am and my values. Yes I know my label is drug dealer, but I was a 14 yo and didn’t know the consequences. Ever since the mistake I’ve bounced back so hard and have now done community service, play football and lacrosse, have a 4.0 , and apart of many clubs. I am and know I am a good person worthy of going to UGA but my record might not let me go into my dream school. I am a different person but I just don’t think I’ll be able to get in. I’m realistic but even if it’s not UGA it still scares me that even lower colleges might not even accept me. I don’t really know what I wanted to do by saying my story, but I needed to just tell somebody.

Hi Richard, we're here for you and you're not alone. People make mistakes all the time and what matters is what you learned from it, if you've grown from the situation and if so - how did you improve? Colleges don't expect you to be perfect. When my friend, Kunal, got expelled he was one of the smartest (and still is) in our entire class and we were so worried for his future and I'm sure he was too! He was brave in admitting his wrongs and it paid off! It's clear you've learned from your mistakes and made actions towards being a better person. Colleges will give you an opportunity to explain your mistakes in the essays so take advantage of it. Stop beating yourself up over the mistake you made since it's in the past. Just look forward, you got this!

hey, would this question. “Have you ever been disciplined, suspended, or expelled for conduct code violations from a high school or a postsecondary educational institution?” also include detentions ?
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp Год назад
Depends on what you got detention for and it's severity. I would first check with your HS counselor before deciding if you want to report it as some counselors will not report.

Mistakes happen and it’s what you learn from your mistakes that will make you stronger. Some don’t realize writing about it is a possibility but could totally make a difference!

I recommend you check with your school counselor if it will be included to the admissions offices. If so, then you can explain your situation in the additional comments section. Good luck!

@@CollegeCareerChamp hello, I asked earlier but they said it was included (they will give us a good moral certificate in my previous school but the disciplinary record will be mentioned) one of the requirements in the university is that certificate. I'm worried that I might be disqualified. what should I do?

also, I recently passed the entrance exam and they will interview me next week, I'm worrying because what if they asked me about disciplinary record and they will automatically disqualify me?

Hey there, I watches this video which helped me feel a little relived, but still worried. I am deeply ashamed of my behavior and what follows. I just got a day of in school suspension for a bad decision of choosing violence by allowing myself to lose complete control of my temper and slap a classmate in class. I terribly regret my poor decisions and unacceptable behavior. I wish I can redo what i have done. Especially since it doesn’t represent the type of person my parents have diligently brought up with blood sweat and tears. Nor does this reflect my usually sweat kind helpful personality at all. From this experience I have learned and known that violence is never the answer and that there are more constructive, mature, and acceptable ways to deal with anger and frustration than simply violence. Plus I’m a senior in a private high school in Texas, number two in my class of 12 with a GPA of 3.98, and I’m applying for local universities in Texas (UTD, Austin College, etc). Will this mistake hurt my admissions? Will this mistake impact chances of me getting scholarships? Will this blemish my future options such as studying abroad, etc? I want to get into university and grow as a person. I’m scared that this uncool decision will be irreversible. Do you have any advice on how I can fix this? Is this the end of the road for my college applications?
@CollegeCareerChamp
@CollegeCareerChamp Год назад
Hey Jing, Thanks for the background shared and glad this video helps you feel better. I absolutely do not think this is the end for you. People make mistakes and admissions officers do not think applicants should be perfect. Did you check with your high school counselor to see if they were going to mention your record to colleges? Would be good to be on the same page. If you feel this event was impactful and you learned a lot from the experience, you could write about this in your applications either in an essay or additional comments section. Another way to ensure you get into a college is to expand your college list so apply to schools outside of Texas too. Hope this is helpful! Keep me updated. I’m rooting for you! @@CollegeCareerChamp Thank you. I did check with my school counselor on Friday, she said that this won’t hurt my chances of getting into university as long as I don’t repeat that mistake or do anything dishonorable or completely uncool. Since this incident will not be reported. I also apologized to those who I have offended in that incident that got me in trouble and handled it professionally. She also urged me to hurry up with my college essay so we can submit it soon.

@@kutsuroi5677 I am glad to hear they will not be reporting this incident. With that said, I do not think it impacts your chances of getting into university. It is good that you acknowledged your mistake and tried to make amends. I also recommend watching this video about mental health, this counselor works with many students who encountered disciplinary action: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-GSMsbX8Ib44.html Hopefully the video will help you overcome some anxiety so you can speed up your college application journey :)

I got suspended for swearing in a social media post for two days as a junior in HS. My GPA is only 3.5, so its really low. I want to be an accountant, but I need to go to college for that. Will my suspension combined with my low GPA ruin my chances? I think I might commit su!c!de if my suspension stops me from going to college.

Sorry for my delay in responding as I'm seeing this comment just now. Please feel free to email me as I have a wellbeing journal I think you can really benefit from. Also you can refer to resources at 988lifeline.org/ or call 988. You can absolutely still get the future you want regardless of the incident in the past regarding your social media post. GPA of 3.5 is still good. What matters most is your reflection and action after the incident. You can also talk to your HS counselor if they plan to report to the colleges so you can prepare accordingly. Please keep me updated and you got this!
