How to adjust, aim the headlights to your car. (instructions and details BMW E39)

As you are saying, I also had them broken, but I just refreshed the headlights, changing the adjusters as well. True, it`s hard to find an E39 with original not broken adjusters, maybe collectibles only.

The adjuster closest to the fender is the one for the lateral adjustment and the one closer to the engine is the one for the height adjusting. To aim the high beams separately you don`t have a separate adjuster. The two adjusters that you have are for the whole unit, both high and low beams.

They are 4 glass lenses with integrated LED`s in them, I installed them on the factory headlights`s frame. Had to do a little adjusting on the frame but I made them fit perfectly, and connected to the factory headlight adjusters, and the factory sokets. Everything looks stock from the outside, except when you see the 4 lenses.

First I measure the distance on the wall, and the distance to the car, to match the specifications, and when one of the headlights is set, I adjust the second one according to the first one.

@@automotive_passion thank you, but do you do anything to make sure the first headline has good left/right adjustment? If so, what? I only see up and down adjustment, not left right, and if the first headlight is off horizontally wise, the second will be off as well

In my case, having two separate lenses for each headlight, first when I assembled the headlight, I made sure that the two lenses were having the light beams exactly on top of each other, doubling one another, so when I assembled the headlight it projected as one beam. I made sure then that the headlight itself is perfectly level and parallel to the ground, while having the headlight adjusters to the medium position. Then you have room to adjust the headlight when its on the car on both axis.

Hi there, yes it will work, the structure of my headlights is OEM, I have not changed anything do the outside of them. You can use the same procedure at your E46 as well.

They are not bulbs, those are LED Lenses from Hella, 2 on each headlight. I found them in Germany through a Hella dealer.

The adjuster twards the outside of the car is the horizontal alignment, and the one twards the inside of the car is the vertical one

the halo`s are cotton angel eyes, basically smd led`s with a bright matt finish over them so the light is evenly distributed.

@@automotive_passion how did u conected the wires of the cotton angel ayes to the OEM bulb socket ,i want to do it like this ,not drilling holes at the headlight .

@@Snease_M57d you get the bulb and the reflector from behind the bulb out, and keep the whole socket from the angel eyes intact. You will see that behind the reflector there are 2 wires that go from the bulb to the connector pins at the end of the socket, the ones that you plug in to when you instal the headlight in the car. You take those two wires, install conectors on them, and then you connect them to the connectors on the angel eyes (that you have also installed on the angel eye cables), should be ...mother and father connectors, same model so they go toghether. And so the original socket remains in the headlight, looks oem, you just plug the headlight normally to it when installing the headlight. If you want to avoid having an error in the dash for non working parking lights, (which comes on only when the main beams are off) then you can install on the wires that are inside the headlight a canbus distributor for each angel eye.
