measure the distance between the mating surface of the float chamber to the top of the float by using a vernier calipers. if the float height is not within specification inspect the valve seat and needle valve if they ant worn then adujst the float height.the float arm should be resting on the needle valve but not compressing the needle valve

@keithcarlson6038

Blowing into the tube is a great way to tell exactly when the float valve closes. But that's just one step. The mfr will have specified a float height - usually measured from the bottom of the float to the gasket surface. Measure this with the float right at that point where the float valve just closes. If you're not measuring, it's guesswork. You might get it to consume less fuel, but if you go too far it could be running lean. You definitely don't want that. Too lean you're risking seizing up.

OK, so the float valve has a little spring in it and this is important for later. Just start with the bowl off, and the float attach but hanging down (so carb is right side up, float is hanging below). Tilt the carb so the float pin stays above the float, but the float itself is approaching the carb body as you tilt. Keep tilting until the float stops moving relative to the carb body. That point right there is when you measure the distance from the carb body to the edge of the float (measure "vertically" from the gasket mating surface/perpendicular/90° straight up to the edge of the float). There is a sweet spot as you continue to tilt where the float still doesn't move, then starts moving again under it's own weight overcoming the spring loaded valve. When it starts moving again you've gone too far. Use a caliper to measure the float height from the carb body while it's in the sweet spot. This is where the manual usually states some degrees like 15-45° or 60°, it's just how they describe where the sweet spot is. You can blow on it, OK, but how do you measure while you're blowing? No wonder you're having difficulty keeping it running, the spec is precise to 1/10th of a mm and your adjustments with the blowing method are in yards.

I just watch a video of a guy holding his carburetor completely upside down and he made no mention of that spring and plunger so he shouldn't be making videos. BUT I did notice his spring and plunger were strong enough to hold the floats up (keeping in mind the carb was upside down). Those tiny springs get weak over time. Mine starts to compress when I set a 1.25Oz weight on it. I have a new needle coming in and we'll see if that spring/plunger is any stronger.

Buddy, was scrolling at your videos but couldn't find any info for my problem. I have an 1995 RM250. i can't get it to idle steady... Its idling at around 2600, then goes to 1500 and shut of. If i blip the throttle while idling at 1500, it get high again for some seconds and goes again down. I rebuilt the top end last week, rebuilt the carb, changed crankshaft seals, messed with jetting. NOTHING! it gets me crazy. If you try to full open the throttle while is at 1500rpm phace, it bogs, lost power and much smoke coming from exhaust (too rich I think), after that, its pull strong and flying. Also tried a hotter plug, nothing changed.

Hey there, Ok so here is how I adjust mine. Turn the carburetor upside down and when the float is parallel with the carb frame it’s pretty good. By looking at your carb when it was upside down, the float did look parallel to the carb frame. But you didn’t show that. What’s your thought on that?

The other method would be to put the carburetor into a good position and then just push the ball with your finger up and then see where it stops

A technique I've heard and tried with success is to take off the float bowl and flip the carb upside down so that the floats are pointing upwards towards the sky. If your floats are pointing upwards when you flip the carb upside down, it's too lean and if they're pointing downwards, the setting is too rich. There has to be the right amount of air and fuel in the bowl to create the correct blend of the combustible mixture made in the float bowl which is determined by your float level, so if the float only shuts off the fuel supply after allowing lots of fuel into the bowl, there won't be as much air in the bowl and if the float doesn't allow very much fuel into the bowl, there isn't enough fuel to mix with the abundance of air, creating a lean mixture causing you to only be able to start but not throttle up, whereby when you try to give it gas there isn't enough available and the engine cuts out for example. Adjust the float by bending the float tongue up or down until your float is level and perfectly parallel with the mating surface of the carburetor that the bowl fits up against. If your carb is slanted like my Mikuni, then likewise adjust in the same way so that's it's parallel and perfectly level with the mating surface. This will give you a balanced fuel level in the bowl, not too rich or too lean, right in the middle, no tools required! Also think about the float tongue when you're adjusting, this is what determines how your float sits in your float bowl, either more towards up, down or sitting level. How you point the tongue is how your float sits, if you bend it down or up, your float will point down or up. When you got it right, your float tongue and the float(s) will both be parallel and level with the carb mating surface that the bowl fits up against. All three should be in sync and level with each other, the float tongue, float(s) and the mating surface of the carb. Hope this helps someone!

You have to be careful, because adjusting fuel bowl float level, also acts on fuel mixture, like yours was and over flowing, that was way to rich, but you have to be careful, by adjusting it like you have, that you haven't gone to lean, if running to lean, it's way worse for the motor than rich, floats are a balancing act, that can be hard to get spot on, set, test ride, see what the spark plug is saying, and keep repeating until it's spot on 👍 😊

These are bad instructions. This method used in video is a lot more time consuming. Simply hold the the carb upside down with the fuel inlet / choke side facing you. Tilt the carb downward until the float balances (not wanting to go up or down). In most cases levels with the mating surface of the carb. Measure from the top of the float to the mating surface. Your manual will specify how much mm. When you have adjusted to the specs in your manual test to see your fuel shuts off. Attach the fuel line from your tank to the inlet. Hold the carb in same position as mentioned earlier (when your float balances or in most cases aligns with the mating surface of the carb). Turn fuel on. Tilt carb back and forth to allow fuel to flow. Tilt it to balanced float position. If fuel doesn't flow at balanced position your float is properly adjusted.
