I just did this on my Sprinter last night. It suddenly started making noise and even some vibration. I took out the front bearing and looked inside to see it was quite dry on the inner bearing. I used a needle on my grease gun and applied grease to the inner bearing, put the outer bearing in place, and tightened the "nut". Fixed the problem nicely. I may put in new bearings soon though. I have 398,000 miles on my van.
Hey thanks for this! I had some play in my front bearing and some wear on the tire that showed me the problem. I followed this and NO PLAY whatsoever in the hub. GREAT VIDEO!
Hi,I discovered that isn't a good idea to tight the nut any more. I did that a year ago but the bearings started to wear and burn due to lack of grease. The best thing to do is to pull the small bearing out clean the old grease and feed the inner bearing with grease as well. When you put them back together, the nut will be in the same position from factory and the wheel will have no more play. By the way for this type of bearings a little play should be. That big play is caused by the lack of grease in bearings.
. . .yes I will try this. After I fight with te and kids so when I'm done I'll it it with my fist like oh hing bag Roger that. I have to plan a night t do this. Kill 2birds with one stone. Ingenious!!!
You don’t wanna tighten the adjustment... it has to be hand tighten then backed off with .01 -.03 play on the reader. Your supposed to have a 6$ decimal reader that’s a magnet and sticks flush with the hub then you losses and tighten the adjustment till it’s in speck. You don’t wanna tighten it hard at all.

+1. .. Now that's having a run-out gauge on you're fingertips. .. Just now serviced my "94 E-Class w124 Coupe. .. Having bought MB dealership sourced 201 330 02 51-kit wheel bearings using an old hand-me-down run-out gauge. .. MB spec all the way ..... color me a stupid DIY'r
By just tightening/loosening the bearing nut & bang-bang on the tyre, how would you know how much is sufficient in order to get rid of any abnormal noise/vibrations from the wheel bearings ? You mean after doing this then take the car for a drive to find out...if still not ok then repeat this procedure again ?!?? This method looks like a lot of guesswork to me...i'll say it's better to spend some money get new bearings & M-B original green grease to save on the risks of 'trial & error' & still not getting to where it should be ?
This is the standard method on all old style American cars. The first time I ever saw a dial gauge used was two nights ago on RU-vid. I am 54 years old and used to be a professional mechanic.
@@grantdubridge7995 I'm also 54 years young. . refreshing to hear from another the same age ! These days it looks to me too many way younger people populating the internet, YT etc. sometimes one wonders where did all the (still living) more matured senior people go ?!?
After adjusting with the rim in place, you knocked the clamp ring out of position before nipping up. This is an inaccurate method which will need to be repeated frequently. Do the job right, the WIS sheet is widely available, nd be careful when nipping up.
