Glad you got it fixed. I’m sure it will be more of a pleasure to use now. Sometimes the worst thing about fixing something is finding exactly what’s wrong.
Thanks for the video. Just recently had trouble with mine going into drive after it warms up. Nice to see how all that linkage works before getting in to it.

I want to thank you for posting this video. As you mentioned most of the other feeds were suggesting much more expensive and labour intensive solutions. This saved me a lot of time, money and aggravation! My bikes never shifted this smoothly
Thank-you I have an 05 Rincon, and have been putting up with that reverse noise for sometime.. I also had advice from a Honda shop.. I’m gonna attempt to adjust the cable and I’ll let you know how it goes..
I recently copied this from the Rincon Riders Forum which has a wealth of knowledge in such matters if you use the search facility:- SELECTOR CABLE ADJUSTMENT (I guess the pages and paragraphs refer to the Service Manual). Remove the following: - fuel tank and head guard plate (page 6-39). - left engine side cover (page 3-17) Loosen the cable lock nuts fully. 12-15 SUB-TRANSMISSION/GEARSHIFT LINKAGE Turn the ignition Operate the selector lever several times and shift switch ON and the sub-transmission into neutral. check that the neutral indicator comes on at this time. LEVER Make sure that the selector arm A stops at the center (neutral) position when setting the guide rod of the lever into the center (neutral) groove in the selector gate. Turn one of the lock nuts until it touches the cable holder while holding the cable. Then, turn the other nut in the same manner. Be sure the nuts are seated on the cable holder and tighten them together to secure the cable. TORQUE: 26 N m (2.7 kgf m, 20 Ibf-ft) Check that the selector lever operates properly. Install the following: - left engine side cover (page 3-17) - head guard plate and fuel tank (page 6-39). 12- Hope that in conjunction with your video, helps someone in the future.
Ah...dont think I want to get into stripping it down like that. But I will save this video just incase it gets to a point of annoyance where I fix it. Mine wasnt as bad as yours. Its a 2007 Rincon 680. Sometimes when i try to shift into reverse it does the grinding sound but then if I put it in neutral or drive and "shift with authority" it goes right in. But normally I dont have too many issues from it. Its very minor. Its kind of like the new modern day refrigerators making so much noise and that being "normal" now lol.
Exactly what mine was doing. It's worth it, and not bad to fix once you know how, the hard part was, I didn't have a clue, so had to figure it out. Good luck with it though. :)
@@TamarackRidge Thanks. I might look into it when I get some time incase it doesnt seem like there is a quick fix for it having to take apart all of that to get to the cable. You would think they would have designed it to make adjusting it easier without having to disassemble anything.
Would this cause it to not shift into drive too? Our farm quad has been sitting a few years because of this and it used to run and drive fine do you think this is what it might be? It goes in reverse fine and a repair shot told us it would be a expensive fix as well…
My gear shifter is stuck in neutral. But i was having the same issue going into reverse before she went into stuck mode. Think its the same culprit or would you suspect something in the tranny?
Id say inhook it at the transmissin and see if you can manually shift it with channel locks over a rag right on the transmission. If you can, then it must be in the cable, if you cant, bigger issues.
It's as easy as that? I've been planning to take it apart and see what's inside and try to fix it. This sounds too good to be true. I'm going to try this thank you for taking time to post this. Could it be that the cable stretches over time and sends the alignment out
A bypass to getting it into gear when it grinds follow theis steps. 1- with the engine off put it in reverse maybe rock it a little to be sure it's in gear. 2- hold the right hand break. Do not let go. 3- start as normal. REMEMBER THE BIKE IS IN REVERSE. this is a built in emergency bypass.
My problem was that the jam nut on the cable end up under the tamk was loose. When I tried to adjust it at the other end, the whole cable was turning up there, doing nothing. I've been using the bike everydsy this spring, and it sure is nice having reverse!!
Nope not a fix for me. All the nuts on the cable were tight. I took the linkage off the shaft that goes into the block and operated it with a pair of vice grips. It did go into gear but not without some grinding. One thing I noticed was that the rotation on the shaft was more than what the cable traveled. Somehow would that need adjusting?
