I’m convinced to get a sit stand desk, so much more adjustable and now you just showed me how to set it at the correct height !

Hi Oliver! You re the best! I would like to have like an example because I m tall like you but I never cannot find right position with consequent pain everyday. I would like to know my friends which is your dimension about height desk, distance and height monitor in cm. I would like to know also the distance between your chair and your desk. I hope you will read this comment and you will help me with a reply. Thank you in advice from your Italian friend!

Hey Oliver, great content! What if I adjusted my standing chair according to your reccomendation, but I'm still expereincing shoulder pain in the right hand (That is using the mouse, and btw I have the same mouse as you?)

And how do I know the right chair height?, so I can adjust my desk to it. Because I feel my desk is in the right position but I dont know if I am sitting to high or too low.

What about if you use a tall keyboard like a mechanical keyboard? Does that impact the adjustment? Or do you advice against using tall keyboards?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
You’re very right, Tim. If you use a thick keyboard, eg Logitech K860, the desk will be lower. This is because the working surface (i.e. what’s just below your finger tips) is the top of the keys, not the desk surface. That’s why a (detached or integrated) wrist rest makes sense with such keyboards.

Hi, really thank you for your great informative video. I have one question, is this method applicable when i am writing on the table?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard Год назад
The ideal hand writing setup could be a little higher, but with a slightly tilted desk to avoid pressure under the forearms. If you can't create that tilt, my advice is that you try to hand write with the desk at elbow height, but make sure that you don't slump towards the paper, which requires proper lighting. Makes sense?

One thing I am curious of is typically you are told to adjust the desk height for an upright seated resting elbow position. What if you recline a lot? Wouldn't that lower your elbows and raise your arms too high?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard Год назад
I think you should approach it differently, namely you should ask: is it a good idea to recline a lot? The answer is here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-McZrQ6JO-nA.html 😉

Hi Oliver, do you have any experience/recommendations for a good anti fatigue mat to use with my standing desk? Thanks!
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard Год назад
Great question, mate... my experience with mats is that the preferences are individual. Some mats are quite firm, some are quite soft... and that doesn't predict anything!! At home, the best advice I could have is that you try with a simple piece of carpet: it already makes quite a difference. If that OK but not enough, buy a thick mat. But that's one of these many things that you cannot evaluate without standing on them first.

so what do you do when the chair cant reach that height and cant get a new desk or chair
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
Well... there are many things there: - the first thing I always question is the meaning of "can't get a new desk or chair": I'm always interested in understanding why you can't, and if there not an inventive way to fix this issue - the second step is to see if you can lower the desk by cutting its legs - the third step is to see if you could raise the chair height by having a cushion under your butt - the fourth step is (once you're 120% sure that you can't do anything technically, even with the greatest will and inventiveness) to adjust the duration of exposure: you need more breaks than if you would be comfortably installed. And during these breaks, you should do the upper body reset to relax the neck strain you created by working on a too high desk: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LdDnb3Miwss.html

I would like to ask. I have figured out my problems with neck and right eye are probably from repeated movement /keybord to mouse - keybord to mouse/ and that have made a giant long-lasting spasm in my traps, pectoralis, SCM ...but I don´t know what to do, I am a righ-handed so the best solution would be to do everything with my left hand. But I do not know which part of muscles in my hand I should release or how to change my habit..there is a big tension. I released my occipital muscles, traps, SCM, levator, pectoralis but the tension is still producing doing this repeated action. Thank You
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
Hey dear. The way you describe it, I think that you won't get anywhere by working on individual muscles. There is a regional phenomenon at stake here, which is in my opinion called forward head posture (which I can also deduct from your other comments on the channel). Hence, my best advice is that you invest your next 8 weeks into this program: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9a5wkLnd54I.html, or that you consider joining the Online Posture Programs (www.onlinepostureprograms.com) if you need more guidance 😉

@@OlivierGirard I don't have adjustable desk. I am 5.8 ft height. Can you tell me what height should I go for desk? Also what should be the height if I stand so that it works for both. Thanks in advance

My problem is I'm not a great typer and I often look down at the keyboard. So when my desk is at elbow level I am looking down more. Not sure how to deal with this.
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
That's one of the rare cases when tilting the keyboard a little can help. But not too much, otherwise you get more pressure in the carpal tunnel. And you can also try to take online touch-typing lessons: they are now cheap and really effective!

Thanks, Olivier! On question: When I'm in the position you showed, my elbows are lower than the fixed arm rests on my chair. Should I detach the arm rest so I don't keep using it? Is there a problem in widening my elbows to reach the arm rest? I noticed my shoulders go up a tiny bit when I do that. Thanks!
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
Hey Ricardo! I your elbows need to spread aside and move upwards to get to the armrests, get rid of them :)

Quick question, can you use this to adjust the chair height to a fixed desk also?
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
yep, you can. But if you raise the chair (because the desk is too high), remember to add a footrest: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-iQbjey8DthY.html If the desk is too low, it's easy to raise with some DIY 😀

Do you think that armrests are a good idea if you have prolonged periods of gaming where youre in an active position for like 40 minutes at a time? I took off my Aeron armrests because they aren't parallel to the floor, they do this thing where they rise from back to front and it bothers me. But Im wondering if I should change to a chair that has better armrests
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
Hey! Great question :) The discussion on armrests cannot be taken apart from the discussion on your overall posture, as I explain here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uZqVPBeOhzA.html. If you master your lats well, armrests are optional. But most people don't...

What about setting the desk, having high profile mechanical keyboard ( keycaps 3 cm above desk level) while using more static task ? Like gaming, having fingers on WASD keys, but wrist is on a wristrest/desk ? (For reference i am about your height and 105 cm would be about right typing with flat keyboard, like the one in video) What are effects of badly adjusted lumbar support ? I have been playing video games in off time without any kind of pains for long time, but now i have issues. Even with ergonomic chair i have tension in lower back after over 30 mins of sitting and i dont know if its normal, or i sitl have wrong setup. Yes i am aware that sitting for long periods of time is bad, just trying to figure out proper posture.
@OlivierGirard
@OlivierGirard 2 года назад
Hey my friend! You raise a good point... when talking about desk height, we ergonomists actually take a dirty shortcut: what matters is working height, i.e. the surface of the keys. Hence, if you have a very thick keyboard, the desk should go down. And having a wrist rest is then a good idea. I guess 105 cm is your standing height, right?? Reg. the lumbar support, have you seen this other video of mine yet: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eXMLHrOsZrk.html ? Knowing that some chairs are of course more supportive than others... Does this help??
@AS-dl2vp
@AS-dl2vp 2 года назад
@@OlivierGirard Yes i have it about 105-106 but I do not lower it down since my wrist on the desk (elbow level) anyway ? That makes sense to me As for lumbar, i have a chair with mash backrest. I did see your video about mash backrest now and i am bit worried i made wrong choice. I did try a chair in the store briefly and i reaky liked it, but i have little idea about lumbar supports. The chair is Profim Accis pro, but you most likely dont know it ( it is Polish made chair) It has hight/depth adjustable lumbar support but ranges aren;t big and mesh on the back seems very flexible
