5 Ways You're Sitting Wrong at Your Desk - Computer Desk Setup Ergonomics

Here are 5 ways I've improved my computer desk ergonomics.
Sitting at my desk used to be a painful experience. My wrists, back, and legs would all ache day after day. There's a lot of advice from several different sources on proper desk ergonomics but not all "experts" seem to agree, either due to outdated information or just varying beliefs. These are just 5 tips that made a big impact on my own personal experience.
*But always consult with a trained professional if you are experiencing any irregular symptoms or pain.

3:17 "the unhealthiest part of working at our desk is the fact we are stationary for extremely long periods of time. What's more important is to change it up as frequently as possible." YES - this so much. as i was young and got into school, everybody said "sit straight and dont move around so much" --- worst advice ever, changing it up actually never gave me any problems - trying to sit "right and straight" for long periods of time started the pains and troubles.

I have just discovered your channel. So far, I am really impressed with the content, delivery, and practical information that you teach. Keep up the good work. I think I can improve my posture based on your video, especially the foot rest. After one hour at the keyboard my legs hurt at the edge of the chair due to pressure. Sometimes the nerves are compressed and I get numbness in the lower leg. I am now ordering the footrest as a result of your video. Thank you!!

This chair was fairly easy to put together, the instructions were clear and I was about to follow along with no issues at all. It took me about 20 minutes to assemble. ru-vid.comUgkx5hPALGI87E991DRmXev8PUFJGrrRcONS I did stuff the back of the chair with a pillow so it wouldn’t be so hollow after taking all the pieces out but that’s just a personal preference. I also added a pillow for lumbar support because although this is a great chair and is comfortable, it’s not necessarily the best if you’re sitting 10+ hrs a day wfh but in all honesty for the price, I didn’t mind at all. It looks great in my space and easily adjusts the height when needed.

This is the single most informative video on desk ergonomics that I have had the fortune to run across; I particularly appreciate the wisdom of using a wrist rest at the palms rather than the wrists, and changing things up, moving about from time to time. Excellent video!

Top Benefits of Buying Foot Rest Under Desk Proper posture and a comfortable seating arrangement are critical when operating at a desk, yet many individuals are ignorant of how their seating choices influence their health. Sadly, discomfort in the spine, pelvis, and feet is all too prevalent among office workers. You may assist ease this pain and avoid future suffering by making a few easy changes. An under-foot desk rest is one such modification you may attempt. The advantages of an ergonomic footrest vary depending on who is using it, their body type, and any previous health concerns. Below are a few of the most prevalent advantages. vISIT: intertainews.com/top-benefits-of-buying-foot-rest-under-desk/

This is the best ergonomic video I’ve seen on RU-vid! Never believe anyone that says 90 degrees anywhere. This guy did not he spoke about where your keyboard should be and how bad drawers are. Love this guy I subscribed to his channel let’s see what more he has to share but as an ergonomic and back care consultant for over 10 years this was a good starting point for most people. I give him a solid A as a grade on this video. I’m sure if it was longer and more detailed I would probably give this guy an A+ . For more information on the way to sit see the N.A.S.A. Yo, this is life-changing actually.. I leaned my chair back a little and it's way better & more chill. With it I had to bring my monitor closer so I can actually see stuff better on there (otherwise it'd be to much and too small) & the same with my keyboard, but all my nausea & headaches are gone (for now) + it feels better to be leaned back, instead of fully upright or even hinged over to the front (accidentally) after longer periods of time.. I kinda feel stupid now, not having thought about this for such a long time.. :D Damn.
@enufots4621
@enufots4621 5 лет назад
Yup, I know exactly what you mean. Btw, now that you have your chairs height, seat, back, and arm rest adjusted economically for your height to an presumably fixed table height...not only moving your monitor closer but make sure the monitor height is correct. When you look straight (such that your head is not looking too far up or down) that your eyes are approximately 2"-3" down from the top of the monitor. This reduces neck strain. I've seen people who had their monitor so low that if they looked straight ahead they would see pass the top of the monitor. These people would be looking down at their monitor all day and pulling their neck muscles. Of course, then there are those who are looking up all day too. LOL

Probably because this is based on what is comfortable and not following some rigid ergonomics "guidelines". Listen to your body. What is your opinion on armrests? One might assume that using a chair without armrests would eventually make the person's neck or shoulders tired, or just cause general discomfort. On the other hand, the armrests might be too much in the way and be hitting the table constantly, which is also problematic.
@enufots4621
@enufots4621 5 лет назад
Incorrect! Chairs without armrests will not make your neck & shoulders tired. As a matter of fact remove the armrest (if possible) or have it at the lowest setting to allow your elbows to float and naturally hanging by your side. If your elbow rests on the armrest in anyways such that it raises your shoulder the slightest bit means your shoulder/neck muscles are tightened. Overtime and under stressful work conditions, you'll have neck & shoulder problems.Then, like it says in #2, adjust your chairs height to the table and not to your legs/feet.

I wish I had seen this video 3 months back. Now with a stationary posture of many hours a day I have screwed my back so badly that it pains everyday. I don't know if it will ever be normal again but guys just don't sit in the same posture all day and work. Life comes first before work, do a little walk every 20-30 mins, rest your shoulders on the chair don't bend forward, the typing position should be as shown in the video and screen should be straight , if you have a laptop then buy a wireless keyboard and mouse so that you don't need to adjust either arm or neck. A little investment can save your lifetime of money that you'll spend to recover from back pain...take this seriously and life will be less harder. Hope it helps.

I had spine surgery in 2011 and spent several months in therapy to even learn how to walk properly. Most of the stuff I learned was proper posture and stuff, but I remember the therapist was saying while sitting at a desk and stuff, more important part really was to not strain your back. To be frank, I do a super, super low lean at my work desk. It's an L-shape and both my elbows are actually on the desk with my wrist perfectly straight. When folks tell me to "straight myself up" or else I'll injure my back, I don't think they realize the opposite has a much higher chance of happening. Great video btw, I would love to learn how to edit videos like you but alas, it's merely a hobby for me.

You forgot to mention how much distance you need to maintain between the monitor and chair (I know it all depends on the size of the monitor and resolution) But there is some recommended distance so that your eyes don't strain over a long period of time!

Impressed by your channel, very good work. Working in ergonomic chair with hand written text, I mean, writing in paper, is different and I can´t find any video about that!

Is there a reason or any downside to having chair arms? I notice he didn’t have them on his chair.
@TheJociman

you can develop a bad habit of leaning on one side, causing possible inflammation in elbow.. happened to me. plus sides are that it relieves pressure from neck/shoulders area and wrists/ fingers depending on your writing position. I'd say definitely use them, but be careful not to lean on them too much!

1:28 look at his arms. How do people play like that? When I play I like to stretch out my hands and put my elbows on the table because it is more comfortable to me

my chair armrests dont fit under my desk so my keyb/mouse are too far away to be comfortable, and if i lower my chair its too low so my arms pinch the desk :/

@Çerastes no, moron. The armrests on the chair are supposed to go under the desk.

@Çerastes no, fucking moron. The armrests go under the desk and your arms sit on the desk at a 90° angle.

Standing is significantly "healthier" than sitting. Even if you feel like your "Standing still", your body is constantly micro adjusting so that you don't fall over. This micro adjustment helps keep blood moving, preventing clots from forming and allowing stabilizer muscles to be used.

Isn't the same true when you sit? You are not sitting still actually.
@dennisplayinglacrosse
@dennisplayinglacrosse 6 лет назад
Norio Takemoto When you sit, your muscles are supported by the chair, so they aren't used much and are inactive. That's why standing is healthier. When you stand, your muscles are still being used to hold you up.

well actually, our body is'nt made for sitting on a chair... the more you stand, the better

I've got a standing desk, and I find I move around a lot when using it, especially if I'm listening to music. If I have my phone in my pocket, Google fit actually picks up quite a lot of steps while I'm standing at my desk. :)
