Checking and adjusting the valves on your quad is a part of regular maintenance but tearing into the engine on your TRX450R can seem like a task that's too big or scary to tackle in your home garage. But with the right know-how and a little confidence, this job can be knocked out in a few hours and save you a lot of time and money down the road. In this video, Charles shows the proper steps to check valve clearances and adjust the valves on a 2008 Honda TRX450ER but the steps shown in this video will be very similar for all TRX450R and ER's.

The lobes are supposed to be facing backwards right? And how would a machine run if they were facing forward because I am working on a machine and the lobs are facing forward in the motor and the motor is very loud like it’s going to blow up so that’s my guess why the motor is so loud

@@rmatvmc I suggest u remake the valve clearance video again. Ur mechanic said the decompression clearance is .026 of a inch. That’s wrong it’s really 0.018 of a inch. Thousands of people are watching this doing there machines wrong. Little clearances can make the big problem.

I'm right in the middle of my shim requires a 2.0 75 which one do I go with 2.05 or 2.10 which would be better 2.10 bigger shim or do you want it tighter
@gamebredduramax71
@gamebredduramax71 2 года назад
Not tighter, these valves can suck up into the head and do more damage

When I measure the clearance of the exhaust valves I can't get any of the gauges to fit underneath the rocker rather only under the lip of the rocker. Is that the correct way to take the measurement or is something wrong keeping me from getting the gauges underneath of it?
@brandonthornton6827
@brandonthornton6827 2 года назад
Too tight. Means you can’t get a measurement. Get some new shims smaller than what’s in it and start from scratch. Gotta find a shim that lets you fit a feeler gauge so you can measure where you’re at and where you need to be.

I can't get my valves adjusted right, the bike ran fine before I put in a new piston and rings. now the valves are so tight it calls for a shim smaller than anything in the hotcams shim kit. the bike won't start, it just back fires occasionally telling me the intake valves are too tight, which they are. it just doesn't make sense why they are all of a sudden too tight with just a piston change.

Valve job time. I opted to just Wierd we a new valve body, and all internals. For me it was a time bra cost thing. Machining is cheaper but cost me more time.

Which way do you turn the idle adjuster to lower the idle rpm’s?

Counterclockwise

The problem is most people think its like the older stuff they owned with good ole steel valves that didn't wear out so fast.. where as this motor has titanium valves so they wear out fast. The seat part on the valve wears away so fast its almost not worth reshimming just do a valve job and get it over with and throw the stock valves in the garbage :)

How do you know when to change the timing chain I pulled mine apart and feel like the chain has a bit to much play in it like the chain is stretched but not sure on how much play should be in the chain??
@nimwit0
@nimwit0 3 года назад
Should be virtually zero, Check the tensioner first before replacing the entire chain
@brandonthornton6827
@brandonthornton6827 2 года назад
Usually when the timing chain is stretched, the fly wheel will line up but the cam sprocket will be half a tooth off no matter what direction you rotate it. So in other words, the cam marks won’t be perfect. That’s when you know the chain is bad unless you can visibly see damage to the chain.

Carbs can gum up in a few months... Diagnose in this order: Compression test, leakdown test, spark test (make sure it will jump an 8mm gap on your tester, if all that checks out ok you can move on to the fuel system. -Charles

Ok i think I figured it out ..on my decompression pin..I think I had put it back on wrong .when I put back on do I have pin all the way back when cam lobes back at tdc or do I have pin inward where the pin lobe is out.. I just noticed in your video that your silver part of pin is touching buckets for intake

Ur WRONG on the decompression clearance, It’s NOT add .014 of a inch!!! Equaling too .026 of a INCH!! I like ur show, looks professional, but ur mechanic made a mistake an got the decompression clearance wrong!!, Once u get the exhaust set to .012in ur supposed to add .006 of a inch!! (Not .014in) MATH: .012in + .006in the real decompression clearance would be .018in (NOT .026in!!) Listen to what he says then read the manual 09’ trx450r The mechanic got mixed up with MM and inches Exhaust clearance belongs .28mm then for decompression arm clearance add .14mm (NOT INCHES) equaling to .42mm I’m a motorcycle technician myself, never would’ve thought I’d see that happen on this show.. mistakes happen… folks the decompression clearance belong at (.018in or .45mm) on that specific quad in the video
