Thank you for fixing our new chairs. I just knew there would be a good RU-vid video out there to explain this, and you explained it well. Simple and to the point. Easy to fix.
I watched about 2 hours of Lazy Boy Recliner Repair videos, and your stuff really stood out to me. This video in specific saved me: I was able to figure out that this was the problem, and I was able to follow these instructions. Otherwise, I might have had to spend money I'd rather not. Thank you very much!
You are my hero!! I just spent a lot of money on a new La Z Boy, and the back was moving too freely backwards. I didn't know there was a tension adjustment. Thank you!
Big Thanks! Wife had insisted I give up"My Chair" for a new Lazy Boy a year ago. Figured the cost of a new one would be cheaper than a lawyer. It was never like my old one, but is much better now thanks to you. Big difference. :)
My dad just bought a La-Z-Boy rocker recliner last night. He is blaming me for putting the back section on wrong when I had to unload it from his truck as the reason the back would not go back after ratcheting. I figured it had to do with something else entirely.
your video saved the day!!!! Just bought a new recliner today that we loved...but every time I sat back the chair would recline little by little. Super frustrated after spending $1000....Googled my problem and your video was the answer on how to adjust the back tension! Kudos!!!!
todd aultman -- I'm glad it helped you out! But keep in mind that unless you purchased your recliner "as-is" with no warranty, you should have full warranty coverage for 1 year. So, if you have any problems with your chair during that time, you can contact the seller to have them take care of it, whether it be a simple adjustment, a defect, or a necessary repair. ;)
I just bought (coming soon) thee Jay “Java” Wall recliner! $850 tax and all from official store! I’m in for 20yrs of chilling lmao! Love Black Friday! Shit was over a grand months/year ago!
Wow! Thank you so much! I was very disappointed and thought I'd have to get rid of my Lazyboy before I saw your video. You explain it prrfectly. I have a swivel/rocker type and was able to just tilt my lazyboy forward... easily found the turn screws by feeling for it, and easily fixed it! The left screw was slightly loose, and the right screw was very loose. Works great now! Many many thanks!!
So THAT'S what those tensioners are for! I bought a swivel glider from La-Z-Boy and nobody explained to me how there are two separate actions with the foot rest and back tilt. I sort of knew that I could push back on the back and move it but I didn't know it was intentional. Thank you for a very informative video.
My wife was laughing at me bc she was like no wonder it was only 50 bucks on Facebook marketplace. Then I said you tube my can help. This video was the first to come up I tightened the screws now I’m not sliding back. Who is laughing now sweet wife of mine?
Thanks you so much I just bought a lazyboy maverick and when I would go to recline I'd be almost upside down lol. Far enough back where my glasses would be behind the chair on the floor if I fell asleep.
Thanks, exactly what I wanted to know. The default tension was perfect for me, but when my cats decide to nap behind my head, the extra weight was causing unwanted reclining way too easily.
Hi, I live in Ohio and have a late 60's extra tall rocker recliner. I picked up the chair for one of my brother's who underwent a quadruple bypass and then was diagnosed with multiple myeloma last fall. We have had two of these extra tall rocker recliners in our family since the early 70's. I had it reupholstered and gave it to him, but it leans or sits back too far and there is a spring missing underneath the chair. I do have a same period parts chair, but was curious if you are located in Ohio, could I bring the chair to you to get checked out?? Please let me know. Thank you.
My lazy boy is totally different underneath. I have mainly metal arms going everywhere and there is t a tension adjustment screw anywhere which sucks because I can’t adjust the back of my chair from being so loose and not staying in recline position
Hello. We just bought a used glider recliner sofa. When moving it it locked or something because know it won’t recline or glide. Can you help me please
Can you recommend a way to lock out the tilt back tension so it is fixed in the upright position? I was thinking adding an additional bolt/nut/washers to each side in the channel so it can't slide. My disabled son just wants to rock in the upright position.
@Fata Morgana - You can tighten the wing nuts completely. Just keep in mind that if someone else tries to recline and attempts to force the back to recline, damage may occur.
Do you have a suggestion when the handle bar/footrest is extremely stiff. It is very hard to open and close. Got it at a thrift store and it's like brand new. I thought it was doing it at store because there was a couch behind it, but got home and after having to get up several times in a row, I almost had pulled my right side muscles in the efforts of it. I think this is why it was donated and why it hadn't been bought. Super comfy other than that
@glorygracek.1841 - The reclining mechanism (or where the handle attaches) may have been damaged at some point. Have an experienced repair tech check it out to assess what needs to be done to repair it.
Hello I have a recliner LazyBoy) and the piece you were holding in your hand and showing how to tighten the tension. Well, the silver part on mine is broken on both sides. Do you have a part number for that and most important do you have a video on how to replace them? Thanks for making these videos, they are great.
@Gord Stewart - No part #, but the part name is Seat Swing Subassembly. Be sure to replace them as a set (both sides). Check out the video called, 'Seat Swing Replacement' on the ReclinerRepairGuy.com website.
lidiya v - The recliners used in my videos are typically a few years old (or older). To learn more about what fabrics, colors & styles are available today, contact a La-z-boy dealer (retailer) or visit the manufacturer website. Keep in mind that you can also custom order fabrics in the event that your local dealer doesn't have a fabric or color that you like in stock.
Great video thank you. Is there a way to adjust the ratcheting mechanism? When I sit in it and scoot back it starts ratcheting back too easily. Thanks in advance!
@Matt N - That has more to do with the geometry & pitch of your chair. If it pitches back easily, it will engage the ratcheting recline parts right away. Check out these videos to learn more: 'Recliner Geometry & Pitch,' 'The Recliner Tipover Problem,' 'Adjusting La-z-boy Rocker/Recliner Pitch.' That last one is only available on the ReclinerRepairGuy.com website at this time.
@violet dickenson - Only if those springs are broken or unhooked. Watch this video to learn more about seat support ---> www.reclinerrepairguy.com/general_repairs.htm#sittinglow
interesting video, but i'm still having problems with the back tension. i've followed your instructions about adjusting both "thumb screws" the same amount (and doing so, with small, equal adjustments as i've learned from watching other videos). unfortunately, when the foot rest is extended, and the back is in the upright, "TV position", the chair sometimes maintains that setting, but more often than not, it will slowly move back into a gradual fully reclined position. i find myself constantly having to move in the chair to force the back into either its upright "TV position" or into a slightly reclined position. following your suggestion with the "thumb screws", the chair still eventually falls back and now the "thumb screws" are as tight as i can get them (which indicates to me that something else is the problem). do you have any suggestions as to what i can do?
@ee - If the chair itself is upright, the tension screws should work normally. However, if the entire chair is pitched back too far, that would put extra weight against the back and make it harder or impossible for it to stay upright. See 'The Recliner Tip-Over Problem' to learn more about chairs that pitch back too far. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-afdeV9S4zwc.html
hello sir .. thank you for your videos .. I have an issue with my recliner .. when I pull the handle and the foot rest is up .. the chair will lean back when I push it gently and I hear clicks ..what is the solution?
Hi, I have a Lazy Boy recliner and when I want to sit back further the lock does not catch and slips back to the original position. Is this fixable? I live in a remote location about 35 miles from a store that sells Lazy Boy chairs as well as other brands but I’ve always loved the Lazy Boy brand. I was told it would cost me $100. for a repair man to come out plus labor charges. I’m 81 and don’t own a truck to take it in so any advice that could help me fix it will be much appreciated. Thank you.
@patriotgrammy8632 - If when the footrest is open the chair does not stay reclined or pitched back, that is likely an issue with the Ratcheting Recline. See this video to learn more ------> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-d8Bk2j4dc-k.html Another repair option is to find a friend, neighbor or family member who can help you take the chair in for repair to avoid the $100 service call fee.
How do I fix the pitch on my layzboy recliner? It sits to high and my feet don’t touch the floor! Please help ! Would you do a video on it please? I have yet to find one on how to adjust the pitch in a 2021 layzboy! Thanks so much!!
@Elizabeth L Henderson -- The video, 'Adjusting La-z-boy Rocker/Recliner Pitch' can be found on my website at ReclinerRepairGuy.com. The adjustment is minimal and will not be noticed by most people. If your feet reached the floor when the chair was new, your lower back padding has broken-in (started to compress), and you are sitting farther back in the seat, thereby lifting your feet off the floor. If your feet did not reach the floor when the chair was new, you bought a chair that does not fit you properly. See my video, 'How to Buy the Right Recliner' for more on that subject.
Question I have four electric lazy boy recliners with the cup consoles in-between I sure wish there were a way to make mine sit up straighter I always feel like im laid back . is there a way to make it sit more upright?
@Sharon Sharon Sharon - I'm afraid not. UNLESS, they sat more upright when you first purchased them. That would indicate they have developed a problem. But if they've always been that way, that's how they are designed. That's why it's so important to try out a number of makes and styles before purchasing, to find the one that works best for you. About the only thing you can do now, is to use a back cushion to sit more upright. I should also mention that if this was a recent purchase, and the furniture still has full warranty protection, you can try reporting the problem to the seller to see if they'll work with you to resolve the problem.
My tension for that part is fine. How do u change the tension for the ratcheting reclining positions? Mine clicks back to a new position with just the slightest movement.
@Infamous Truth - The Ratcheting Recline feature is designed to engage when the footrest is extended to keep the chair from rocking. There is no adjustment, it just engages. If the chair then pitches back too far on its own, this is a separate issue that often has to do with weight distribution in the chair. I have a lazyboy recliner that seems to be tilted back, my feet are off the floor by about 6" and I am medium height - this is a Morrison. Also when I have it in recline position, it rachets into a place but then sort of rocks when I move at all, then if I go another notch back it wil click into place, then do the same thing after a minute. We adjusted the tension on the back, that didn't seem to fix the problem. Any idea what this could be? Have watched several videos. The chair is two years old and I got it second hand.
@Annie Bee - If your ratcheting recline is not working properly, it's likely due to a repair issue. There may also be a repair issue that's causing the chair to lean back farther than normal. Have a repair tech check those out for you. On the other hand, some chairs have a more relaxed geometry. Those backs are not as upright as other recliners. To learn more, see the video 'Recliner Geometry & Pitch' on the ReclinerRepairGuy.com website.
We just purchased a lazy boy reclining sofa, manual operation. When I am sitting in the reclined position, I have difficulty putting the foot rest down and getting back out of the reclined position. I was told there are adjustments under the seat of the sofa toward the foot rest. How is this done?
Deb Scheuerlein - There is a tension adjustment (see video where you posted your comment). I believe on sofas this adjustment may be located toward the front of the seat, rather than toward the back, as in the video. Try using the adjustment, but if it doesn't solve your problem, contact the retailer where you purchased your furniture to report the issue.
I have mine as tight as they'll go and the backrest still goes back too easily when I don't want it to. I'm beginning to wonder if the previous owner oiled it or something. Can I replace the tensioner parts?
@jamienoel - When the tensioners are fully tightened, the back should no longer tilt back. If it does, that suggests that something may be broken. Yes, you can replace the Seat Swings that control the back tilt ------> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jzN1x5jZ-gA.html
So when I push the back of my recliner back it pushes back forward again on me unless I keep pressure on it. Will it help for me to loosen it? I worry that it won't want to come back forward if I do.
@Live&LetDie - Yes. The adjustment is simple and can be undone if you don't like the results. Just take note of how much you loosen each thumbscrew on each side. I.E. - a 3/4-of-a turn or whatever (small increments are best, track each one). If you don't like the results, turn the screws back to their original tension. If you are not able to dial-in the correct tension and have the back work properly (won't come back up, etc.), there is a problem with the Seat Swings (parts that control the back tilt), or the chair does not fit you properly. For proper fit, see this video ----> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FgegZ9qiuC4.html
Thanks. I'll try this. Otherwise, I might get rid of my 2 chairs. I get a sore back and neck. It's as if the back tilts forward slightly. My son has a 3rd chair in his room and it doesn't do this. His is actually comfortable.
@MikiDoodleMom - If you're getting a sore back or neck, the chair may not fit you properly. See this video to learn more --> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-FgegZ9qiuC4.html Or, the back padding may need to be restuffed. It's common with recliner back padding to compress in the lumbar & middle-back areas first. This can result in the headrest section pushing the head forward (neck pain). And the remainder of your back not being properly supported (back pain).
@@reclinerrepairguy4155 thank you. I did suspect a padding issue. I do sit with a pillow for lower back. I have a pair of blue leather chairs. Thinking of just selling them for $50. 👍
My recliner doesn’t have the thumb screws. Is there another way I can try fixing it since my recliner back wont stay reclined until full pressure is given?
Our la-z-boy chair makes a very loud creaking sound (the noise is as if dragging a finger slowly across a painted wall) when tilting the back rest backwards, especially if done slowly. The noise is definitely coming from this tension mechanism, from the plastic washer type piece sliding across the metal guide as the backrest reclines. We're at a loss of what to do about this. Reducing the tension screws reduces the noise frequency, tho the backrest then becomes too loose. Do you by any chance have any suggestions or recommendations of how to go about remedying this noise? It would be much appreciated.
@Dingo - The metal guide on the Seat Swings is typically lubed when the chair is built. You can apply a thin layer of lithium grease to the guide to lube it. You may have to readjust the tension after lubing.
The ratchet sound is actually a Lazyboy only feature. It's supposed yo make the sound. Sold them for several years, and a good salesperson should know that.
Sincerely, thank you. Straight forward video that helped alot My lazy boy would sloooooowly reclining as i sat in it... it almost got the heave-ho Lol Thanks again
My chair had a spring that locked the foot rest down. That spring broke so my footrest won’t lock down. Can I get you or someone to get a spring & put it on. I’m a widow & live alone have no idea how to fix it if I had the spring.
@Doris Qualls - If you happen to live in or near Mansfield, Ohio, email your address to me at pete@reclinerrepairguy.com If you don't, see these tips for locating someone in your area --www.reclinerrepairguy.com/locate.htm
How tall are you? I was looking at getting this model (Crandell) but am 6'6". My current la z boy is too short for me but seems smaller than this model. Thanks.
David Brawn - The chair shown in the video is not a new chair. So it's entirely possible that if this style is still being made, it may not be exactly the same. It is, however, what I would call a "Big Man" recliner as it has a wide seat and back and a fairly tall back. (I'm 6' 1") Always try out any recliner yourself before you buy for proper fit and function.
I have a large La-Z-Boy recliner about 15 years old which is in very good shape. But I do not see any thumb screws on this chair for this adjustment. Has this feature been added in recent years?
@MrMusiclover41 - The feature has been common to La-z-boy manual recliners for many years. But I don't believe it's used on hi-leg recliners. There may also be some wall-saver units where it's not available as well. And of course the power recliners don't have it, since the back tilt is electrically controlled.
@@reclinerrepairguy4155 My present recliner is not a high-leg model, nor is it a power recliner. It is a rocker-recliner, and not a wall-saver model. I looked again and still see no thumb screws for adjustment. This chair is fairly large and was not one of the "economy" models. This model is no longer made, apparently. Since I have COPD and sleep in my recliner, this is pretty important to me. I have ordered a new Randell Rocking Recliner which is not a power recliner, specifically for sleeping. The Randell is larger than what I would require for just sitting, since I intend to use it for sleeping. I can take a photo of the bottom of my old recliner for you, if that would help. Thanks for any help.
So what's the next step after both wing nuts are completely tightened with the tension springs fully compressed BUT the tension is still way too loose?
@Goodsnout - The tension adjustment is for the back tilt only. It does not control how far the entire chair can pitch back. That's controlled by the Rocker Springs & the design of the chair. To learn more, see Recliner Geometry & Pitch ---> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xxZ8Heyz2x8.html And the Recliner Tip-Over Problem -----> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-afdeV9S4zwc.html
Nope. On my 1972 vintage La-z-boy the back just falls (flat back) when I get out of the chair. This has only been happening for the past year. I have both wing nuts as tight as I can get them. There are no threads left to take up. There must be a different adjustment that I just can't find. Could you direct me to the solution?
@Goodsnout - You don't want to tighten the wing nut completely unless you don't want the back to tilt at all. Obviously something is broken on your chair -- quite possibly the Seat Swings. Have a local repair tech check it out.
I have an older Lane recliner, where recline and footrest are connected...but the recline has a definite "stop" position, but it's not as reclined back/flat as I would like. How would I adjust that or know if it even can be adjusted? It has a round disc bottom on floor...
@markjroberts43 - How far a recliner opens up or tilts back is pre-determined by the mechanism design & is not typically adjustable. However, if the chair had reclined further back in the past, this may indicate a repair is needed to restore the full range of motion.
@@reclinerrepairguy4155 When looking to purchase a new recliner, what is the term for the kind of recliner that has separate footrest action (so you can sit *upright* with footrest up) and then will also recline to a very far back- almost flat- position, so you can sleep in the recliner? This Lane mentioned above is no where close to flat for sleeping...thanks so much for your vids! Rsvp.
@@markjroberts43 - I believe most recliners today are made to achieve the "TV position." I.E. - Footrest open & back in the upright position. Whether or not they will lay almost flat when reclined is something you'll likely have to inquire about.
Beanflip - There is a small pitch adjustment that can be made, but most people will not notice the difference... it's that small. You can learn how to adjust it here ---> ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-syEFBysw8Ic.html
