Great video! You do quite well in front of the camera, and the info you're imparting flows naturally and without pomp or pretense. Good work Sir! I liked the video before you really got into the actual process because of how calm, collected, nice and easy going you were. Keep up the great work, and I look forward to seeing more from you!

Thanks mate. I don't like how most RU-vid videos these days have people bouncing around and yelling like coke addicts in front of the camera. I like to just talk the same as I do if you were standing in front of me!

Nah, that's just Graham. He's alright. Lost a leg in a fight with his missus, but he'd keep his chin up if he had one.

Good old jeweller's pickle. Nice one mate, if you quench red hot copper in the pickle it'll strip the oxides stupid fast.

@@ValhallaIronworks Here's what happend to my project :D I transfered the artwork to the brass plate. Put it into ferrichloride to etch. It etched about half a milimeter, enough for me. I wanted to then age it and lightly sand the top so everything looked aged except for some lettering, which would be nice and gold. But the entire piece turned reddish-pink :D Then I found out that ferrichloride ate away the zinc in brass, leaving pretty much only copper on the surface. Aaaalrighty. They said "put it into a mix of vinegar and peroxide so it turns gold again by eating away the copper". Nothing happened. So I managed to somehow use a scotchpad to brush away the top layer after vinegar/peroxide mix and somehow get to a kind of goldish tint, half way. Rubbing it more would destroy the lettering and everything. OK, kinda works, let's simply age it now and be done with it. I put the piece into a mixture of vinegar and salt and let it sit with a closed lid. 24 hours later - nothing happened :D :D A few green blobs on the corners and that's it. I finally gave up, sanded the top to expose the lettering in gold and left the low, etched spots red. Liked it, like two metals combined. So there :D

Should you protect threads in pieces that need sealing?
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks 3 года назад
As far as my experimentation has gone, the effect doesn't actually cause any pitting of the surface, so threads should still work just fine!

Who doesn't like salt and vinegar. But, one question, I use vinegar to clean my water boiler, and it really bubbles and raises alot. So should one keep that in mind, if you heat the solution (salt and vinegar) up it can reach the brass through the holes? Is it also possible to put it in a box of tupper ware? and just seal it? I mean, one could elevate the piece to age with wire above the solution and just put it in there and store it somewhere for 24 to 48 hours. or will the fumes raise the pressure and let the box pop up ?
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks 3 года назад
So long as it is encased with just the fumes and not touching the liquid, any solution will work!

It helps arrest the antiquing process once you've gotten it to a place where you like it!

I actually don't remember the name, but it's track 6 off of the album "Souvenirs" by Old Semeil. Check out their bandcamp link in the video description!

Have you tried this on copper?
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks 2 года назад
I have, actually! Just recently. It's nowhere near as effective. To tarnish copper there are a couple of ways to do it. To get a blue scale patina you spray it down with a boiled mix of salt dissolved in vinegar, or to get a dark brown patina you use a high concentration of baking soda boiled into distilled water.
