Thank you, that was a very good tutorial. I’m the same as you, I usually start on the right hand side of the heart, but I recently found that starting at the very bottom of the heart is better, cuz I can then do one overstitch on it and it doesn’t show up as much. I found it to be a neater look, rather than directly on the right hand side where it shows a lot more. Thanks, I enjoyed your tutorial.

It is an old video, so I am not 100% sure what I talk about. But you might be able to speed it up and get some tips for what I did working with sweatshirt fabric (similar to jersey). Depending on the fabric you might want some tear or wash away stabiliser to support it whilst your sewing.

@patrice8257
@patrice8257 3 года назад
@@kizzywitch hey you can use freezer paper no problem its a type of wax on it and it does not mess with your fabric either. You can also use school glue (small dots along the edge of your fabric) to hold something just make sure it's dry before sewing and it washes right out make sure it's the school glue (cost is low)or sewable speciality glue(more expensive).

Yes I can’t see why not. You may have to check that the edge of the letters isn’t peeling up. You could also use a basting adhesive like 505 spray, this might help more than hand basting. But hand basting will work if your careful.

you've made the satin stitch look so easy. I'm making pillows with names and satin stitching the edges if the letters. "Jacob" letters are very rounded. I have no clue how else to do this. I have a Singer 3232 .
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 8 лет назад
Hi Victoria, that sounds like a lovely idea. The letters for Jacob are round and therefore a bit more difficult but perhaps you could create a practise one first? You will need to practise to find the place on the sewing machine foot where you need to line up the edge of the appliqué letter fabric so that the needle catches both the appliqué fabric and the main fabric. I would use Bondaweb as having the letters stuck down will make them much easier to sew around. Does your machine have a satin stitch? Or can you change the length on the zigzag to make a satin stitch? It is quite forgiving if you choose a thread the same colour as the back ground fabric. Let me know how you get on! Aneka x

Why'd you take the double sided adhesive off? Once you take it off, does it leave your piece of fabric stiffer? I never used double sided b4 but either way I always thought you just left it on & sewed over top of it?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 5 лет назад
Hi Tiffany, sorry for the delayed reply. This is Bondaweb so it is supposed to be removed as then you can iron it on the position you require on your project. It adds a little bit of stiffness to the fabric, a bit like interfacing. You can use other products that would be left on and sewed over like stabilisers. Hope this helps, Aneka

A very good instruction video with several useful pieces of advice. i'd have liked to see some examples of motifs and letters which need to be drawn in reverse so that they come out right when you prepare them for your fabric. It so happens I made a big mistake with this aspect of applique myself. That is to say it was a large-ish design. Also, There is a special applique bond-a-web which doesn't need sewing (as long as you aren't going to dry clean it, or it will dissolve). It's called no-sew Heat'nbond.there is a sew-in version as well. I gather it's the thickness of the glue used.It would also be good to see the reverse side of all three examples.
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 8 лет назад
Hi Vanessa, I am really pleased you enjoyed the video and I apologise for not showing the back of the samples. I thought I had included it in the blog post (www.madetosew.com/how-to-applique-3-different-stitches/) but only the straight stitch sample is visible. If you would like to see images of the back I can take some and email you? However they do look the same as the front, with just the stitching. Incase it is useful I show how to appliqué letters and motifs (solving the backwards issue) in this tutorial: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xIsczgkBTZo.html Thank you for letting me know about Heat'n'bond, that is great to know about. Thank you for sharing. Thank you and good luck with your appliqué. Aneka :-))

Hi. What machine are you using? Can we do the 3rd stitch with the normal sewing machine?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 6 лет назад
I am using a Husqvarna Emerald 116 or 118 in this video. Yes you can do the third stitch with a normal sewing machine, it is a zigzag with 0 length. So you can set this up on any sewing machine. I hope this helps. Aneka
@janetmewhorter6646
@janetmewhorter6646 6 месяцев назад
how do you prevent the glue from the heat and bond from gunking up the needle? mine skips stitches, bunches up threads on the back and does not give even widths of zig zag stitching. I have tested it on the same fabric without the heat and bond and it works fine, so it is not my machine or the settings. Should I cut the stabilizer smaller than the motif to correct this?

The two step zigzag will look just like a zigzag on the icon, whereas the 3 step will look like a dotted zigzag. Happy for you to email me (info@madetosew.com) and I can send you a photo if this would help? Aneka x

Anyone can help me? I have trouble sewing appliqué. The thread keeps shredding. It seems there is sticky residue from the bondaweb on the needle. It seems that needle gets stuck in the appliqué.

Hi there, sorry to hear you are having a problem. I am pretty sure that the Bondaweb I use doesn't give a sticky residue (I will double check this and get back to you), but I am almost 100% certain. Do you know if it is own brand Bondaweb, or a different brand? For example I sometimes get my customers to use double sided basting tape and this does give a sticky residue when sewing, so you have to replace the needle after working with it. When it comes to the thread, what thread are you using? What size needle are you using? Hopefully we can solve the problem for you. Aneka x

Made To Sew omgosh! Is is not the same brand! I feel so silly that's probably the problem. I use typical polyester thread. Needle I've tried Universal needle in both 70-80 US size. I even tried a jersey needle. But now after you said that I'm sure it's the type and brand of appliqué bond I'm using. Thank you so much for replying!

Really pleased we were able to solve the issue. It's always frustrating when you don't know why it's going wrong, please don't worry we have all been there! :-))

WinMichele4 You need to use the light bond web. Not the heavy as the needle will get sticky.

The needle is to be in the middle of the pressure foot when doing satin stitch?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 7 лет назад
Hi Donna, yes the needle should be in the middle of the foot when doing a satin stitch. However it will depend on your sewing machine whether the zigzag is positioned centrally or not. What I am trying to say is that with my basic sewing machine the zigzag starts from the left and as the width of the zigzag increases it moves to the right, it doesn't centre it around the centre of the needle placement. However some machines will centre the needle and the zigzag will take place either side of the central needle placement, no matter what size / width zigzag you choose. Does that make sense? Thank you, Aneka

It's a shame you did not demonstrate how to negotiate the corners.

Hi Tammi Jane, oh I am so sorry. In this tutorial I do show it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-xIsczgkBTZo.html at 7.47, inside corner. Does this help? Aneka x

What do u need the bond ware for?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 3 года назад
It will position your motif in the right place and hold it there, as well as supporting it when sewing, which can make the stitches look better.

What kind of sewing machine foot is that?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 4 года назад
Hi Lauran, this is actually the standard machine foot for the machine I was using in this video: Husqvarna Emerald. I believe Husqvarna have it as their standard foot.

what kind of fabric do you use for the motif?
@MadetoSew
@MadetoSew 7 лет назад
You can use anything (within reason), this fabric was 100% cotton. Cotton / polyester or lightweight upholstery would be a great start. Hope this helps, Aneka
